If you’re in Liverpool, why on earth would you get tested?

I just don’t understand why healthy people would get tested and encourage more lockdowns?

Anyone in Liverpool? What are people’s thoughts on this mass testing?

Have you ever heard of asymptomatic people ??

bunintheoven88 · 06/11/2020 18:35

Erm to stop those who are Asymptomatic passing it on?

DiddlySquatty · 06/11/2020 18:37

I guess it does require some public spirit-ness
I hope people do engage with it as will be interesting to see how rife it is, and I can totally see how it would bring down numbers very quickly if enough people agree to be tested
But I fear people may not

Your point is a bit illlgical tho - if this was rolled out I can imagine how it would mean people are locked down/isolating only when they really need to.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 06/11/2020 18:38

They are all mixing together in those queues to get tested, more likely to catch it I would have thought.

Bunnybigears · 06/11/2020 18:39

Because it is for the greater good and will actually prevent mass lockdowns if asymptomatic people are aware they have it and can self isolate.

OnlyBejoking · 06/11/2020 18:40

People are getting tested out of community spirit and civic duty in the hope of stopping spread from asymptomatic people. Hopefully enough will do it to make a real difference.

megletthesecond · 06/11/2020 18:40

To see if it can pick up asymptomatic cases.
The more that are identified the more can isolate and hopefully start to knock covid on the head.

EmmaGellerGreen · 06/11/2020 18:44

I agree OP. If you do the public spirited thing and get tested and then get a positive result whilst asymptotic, you and your family/contacts have to isolate. If you’re struggling financially anyway, it’s a financial risk that some people won’t be willing to take. Obviously it’s the right thing to do and we would do it because we’re lucky; financially and practically we are in a position to isolate.

Cuddling57 · 06/11/2020 18:47

I agree OP.
There needs to be a big positive public campaign for this and full pay from the government if you text positive or have to isolate.
Surely cheaper than furlough?

3littlewords · 06/11/2020 18:47

I think the main people who will volunteer are those who are either financially secure, wfh, furloughed or know they'll be guaranteed full sick pay if required to isolate, and the same for their family members. Anyone who cant afford for them or someone else in the household to isolate will not volunteer for a test without symptoms. Morals and "doing the right thing " are put on the back burner for anyone who can't afford to put food on the table to do it

Keepdistance · 06/11/2020 18:48

The lockdowns are because they dont know who has it.....
We are all locked down because of a load of irresponsible people not quarantining when needed to.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 06/11/2020 18:48

Just been messaging with my SIL in Liverpool this evening. She and BIL have booked a home test as they don't have time to queue. She is teacher, he works in NHS (not clinical).

starrynight19 · 06/11/2020 18:49

So that everyone can understand how the virus is working.
Also if as many positive people are out of circulation as possible in the next four weeks they stand a much better chance of coming out of tier 3 and getting a little more back to ‘normal’ for Christmas.

satnighttakeaway · 06/11/2020 18:50

If you're worried about the financial implications and you don't have any symptoms then obviously you wouldn't go for the test. That's common sense surely but every asymptomatic case they catch will reduce the possibility of transmission.

I don't understand why everyone doesnt know by now that no one measure needs 100% compliance, all the little bits add up to keeping numbers down.

Good on the public spirited population of Liverpool, why do posters have to be so negative

Nannewnannew · 06/11/2020 18:51

I’m concerned about whether the way the tests are done are effective.
2 people have told me that pre hospital Covid tests were very painful as the swabs went right to the back of their throat and very high up in their nose. When watching tv news last evening a man was doing a test on himself with somebody watching and he was literally swabbing the inside of his cheeks, like they do with DNA tests.
Are there 2 different tests or is the self test ineffective if not performed properly? I would be interested to hear from any testers.

This! I’m amazed it isn’t obvious to people Confused

If they don't know they have it how can they then be irresponsible for not quarantining? Confused
Heyahun · 06/11/2020 18:53

People who think like you are the reason we are going to be in lockdown longer 😂 ffs

VanCleefArpels · 06/11/2020 18:54

Some tradespeople have been going for regular tests so they can assure their clients and therefore retain a source of income.

megletthesecond · 06/11/2020 18:56

The Liverpool mass testing is one of the few things they've got right.
This should have been done in every large town and city from August onwards. Might not be locked down then.

BecomeStronger · 06/11/2020 18:57

I think you'd have to be in a very secure job with a very understanding boss and excellent sick pay.

Of course it's the responsible, community minded thing to do but to risk losing, at best a fortnight's pay, at worst your job when you have no symptoms?

There'll be plenty of people here who say of course it's the right thing to do but I don't think any of them would do it if it was the difference between paying the bills and not or even giving their kids a decent Christmas and not.

OddBoots · 06/11/2020 18:57

It wasn't on quite the same scale but they did the same thing in Luton at the end of July and it worked well to reduce the cases, knowing where the cases are means that you can contain them. It will put Liverpool in a much better position at then end of the national restrictions (never mind the lives and health problems it will save).

BeakyWinder · 06/11/2020 19:00

I'm really interested to see the results of this, my guess would be 20% positive. Let's see! Hopefully regular testing + a vaccine roll out starting in the next 3 months will be the beginning of the end of lockdown.

Mydogisagentleman · 06/11/2020 19:01

Because some people can be asymptomatic carriers.
My 19 year old went to university in Nottingham. 3 weeks later she phoned us with these glad tidings

satnighttakeaway · 06/11/2020 19:02

@VanCleefArpels

Some tradespeople have been going for regular tests so they can assure their clients and therefore retain a source of income.
How does that work?

Surely the 14 days quarantine between tests and each piece of work would mean they"d lose loads of money
