If you’re in Liverpool, why on earth would you get tested?

I just don’t understand why healthy people would get tested and encourage more lockdowns?

Anyone in Liverpool? What are people’s thoughts on this mass testing?

We are in lock down because our hospitals are at capacity. We have cancelled surgery for cancer patients and none urgent casrs. People are being left in pain and with reduced mobility because of cancelled surgery and treatments.

We aren't in lock down because of infection rates.

There's a variety of reasons to get tested. Assaid for the greater good, peace of mind, to visit vulnerable relatives. On the one hand you have tje possible issues of having to isolate, on the other hand you have the issue of it continuing to circulate and the schools having to close. If schools closed= can't go to work then you might as well get tested.

People need to be clear that this isn't about infection numbers or deaths, our hospitals are full of younger Covid patients. We have Staff shortages, because people have Covid. We need to do all we can to stop the virus spreading more than it needs to.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/11/2020 19:04

I would get tested, just out of curiosity.

DameCelia · 06/11/2020 19:04

Because I'm not a selfish antisocial twat.

Generalconfusion · 06/11/2020 19:05

Thank you, people of Liverpool. xx

VanCleefArpels · 06/11/2020 19:06

@satnighttakeaway they get tests to show they are negative so they can do the work in other peoples houses - heard this more than once on phone in radio shows

ChristmasinJune · 06/11/2020 19:07

Firstly to drive numbers down more (they're dropping already) admittedly numbers will rise initially as they identify more asymptomatic people (plus those who are sick but don't have the big 3 symptoms) but then as they take more positive people out of circulation the numbers will drop more quickly than they would have been with a symptomatic people walking around spreading it
Secondly, on a personal level, a regular test will make me feel a bit more comfortable to see my 75+ parents (my support bubble) because I'm desperate to see them but worry about inadvertently making them ill.

Todayisgood2 · 06/11/2020 19:07

People in lpool will get tested out of community spirit. Great city with great people.

OddBoots · 06/11/2020 19:07

Of anywhere I would think it would work in Liverpool, many of the people are such a community, they are far more likely to be looking out for their neighbours, even to their own disadvantage.

Because I'm not a selfish antisocial twat.
And can presumably financially afford to isolate for 2 weeks if positive. Lucky you!

Oh, I'm sure you've heard it but I can't see how it makes sense as we all know that the incubation period can be up to 14 days, unless they then isolate and have another test two weeks later it's a total waste of time and tests

Isnt it the same issue as testing people when they arrive at airports, it will only pick up those who are positive on that day not those who may go on to develop symptoms.

But they are only negative at the time of the test, still could have picked it up between test time and now

Ponoka7 · 06/11/2020 19:13

What I will say though is that the location of the test centres aren't great for people without cars. A lot of more vulnerable/elderly people who would have liked tests now can't get them, which is a shame.

I'm two buses away from all of them. I live in one of the deprived areas which has high infection rates, but we don't have a local test centre. Which does show that it isn't totally for the good of the city.

TheHoneyBadger · 06/11/2020 19:15

There is money for isolating people and a benefits system. If people are on low incomes they are likely already getting universal credit and it would reflect the lost income as well.

There isn't an excuse and teachers, nhs workers, supermarket staff etc shouldn't be being put at risk because people won't get tested.

Lelophants · 06/11/2020 19:18

It would be quite nice to know if you've had it! Also, you tbink People follow lockdown just because 'government sez so' Hmm
Some people actually care and don't want to hurt their loved ones. Or anyone, actually.

UC is paid in arrears though so whilst they're income would be topped up it would only be next month, it doesn't help the here and now for losing 2 weeks income. Last I heard the asda wasn't doing buy now pay later offers
jambeforeclottedcream · 06/11/2020 19:20

I'm taking part of the ONS covid scheme which requires regular covid tests.

We are doing it for our own piece of mind. I work in a school so could potentially pick it up there but I could go unsymptomatic and pass it on to others

FreshFreesias · 06/11/2020 19:21

I agree OP.

This
stressbucket1 · 06/11/2020 19:26

@Ponoka7 you can get a home test kit instead of going to the sites.
Take up seems to be very good for day 1. I think the prediction is between 3-5% positive rate for asymptomatic people. If it works we should have a good reduction in numbers by the end of lockdown period. Also its the best time for people to self isolate as so much is closed at the moment anyway.

Lindy2 · 06/11/2020 19:26

Why on earth wouldn't they get tested?

I'm sure no one (apart from possibly the OP) wants to be asymptomatically spreading the virus.

Find out everyone who currently has it. Isolate them all plus contacts. Dramatically reduce the active cases in Liverpool and make it safer for everyone who lives there.

It's called caring for others OP and being prepared to take action yourself to look after other people - even those you don't know. Luckily most people have this ability, but sadly clearly not everyone.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 06/11/2020 19:28

Because I work in a school and my partner is CV.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/11/2020 19:33

I’d do it - if it was positive and I was asymptomatic I would absolutely love 2 weeks off work!

It would be on full pay which I know makes a big difference but at the moment I feel absolutely ground down with no sign of any improvement coming soon so a 2 week respite would be perfect.

BillBaileysPasoFace · 06/11/2020 19:36

Say you have the virus.

You don’t get tested, so you don’t know. You maybe have no symptoms. So you continue to go to work and potentially spread it further.

A mass testing like Liverpool is an attempt to take the pulse, see what the asymptomatic range is. People of Liverpool are being invited to do this for the greater good. To improve our understanding of this virus.

Anyone going “ I’m not getting tested cos I might not be able to work” when they might in fact be spreading to who knows how many other people is in essence selfishness.
