It feels enjoyment of life has become socially unacceptable

Firstly I am.not against the current nor previous restrictions. I am aware of the sacrifices and difficulties faced by frontline NHS workers. I am also aware of the sacrifices made by those who were killed in the 2 world wars. But it is beginning to feel as if there is a nationwide perhaps even worldwide competition to see who can out misery the other. The utter utter drivel posted here during the Spring restrictions about how everyone's neighbours were having parties and how someone buying a chocolate bar would lead to bodies bursting out of hospitals, the sick sick air of Hyacinth Bucket meets Margaret Thatcher sanctimoniousness that seems to be everywhere, the compulsory addition of "the fuck" to the imperative "stay at home", the way young and poorer people have been thrown under a bus socially and economically, the "close pubs open schools" mantra. I'm just sick to death of it, & genuinely cannot ever see how a quality of life, friends, bars, concerts, trips away will ever return. It feels like everyone has turned into a curtain twitching moralist, it is illegal not to have a frontline NHS NHS worker in your family and we should never ever ever utter any words of sadness for the old life because people died in the Second World War. I hate what life has become.

I'm sick of hearing the word "selfish " too. Everyone and anyone is selfish according the world of Mumsnet 🙄

Namechanged1122 · 05/11/2020 16:34

Agree. Totally agree and I'm scared that this is how it will be forever.

AtrociousCircumstance · 05/11/2020 16:35

So what’s your suggestion? What’s your great plan for controlling this virus, reducing all the deaths?

What’s your brilliant overview other than moaning you want to go back to the pub?

yorkshirepudddiing · 05/11/2020 16:36

I agree.

I feel like there is absolutely nothing left to enjoy about life.

It's fucking miserable.

Namechanged1122 · 05/11/2020 16:37

It's nothing to do with 'the pub'. It's about the loss of our freedom, with no sign of it ever coming back.

RaggieDolls · 05/11/2020 16:37

I agree. I would add one thing. I'm utterly sick of the apples and pairs comparison of Covid and WW2. They are not comparable and the fact the population have faced harder situations in the past is totally irrelevant to the here and now.

Juststopswimming · 05/11/2020 16:38

Agree so much OP. There is a sort of competitive sanctimony that is rife on MN (and to a degree in 'real' life) at the moment. Very depressing.

The good times will return. Humans are overwhelmingly compelled to be sociable and enjoy themselves; this is just going to be a blip. I know there are very grey days when it is impossible to see any chink of light but I do truly believe that.

In the meantime, I get my kicks from goading the lockdown-enthusiast doom-mongers!

Namechanged1122 · 05/11/2020 16:38

I feel like England will be the last to emerge from all this, because the majority of the general population seem to be ultra-conformist and love wallowing in misery.

Pollynextdoor · 05/11/2020 16:39

So what’s your plan OP? What would you do differently?

AtrociousCircumstance · 05/11/2020 16:42

This situation is a nightmare. But moaning about personal freedoms - and you are talking about the pub, you are talking about shopping - is depressingly self-focused. Can’t you see the bigger picture? Don’t you want to protect others?

The situation will improve. A vaccine will roll out, in stages. Life will go back to normal, bit by bit.

We are in lockdown to prevent more deaths. It’s temporary. Surely a few weeks of hibernation is more important than (in your words) bars and concerts?

IrmaFayLear · 05/11/2020 16:42

Also how it has become political. The more pro-lockdown you are, the more virtuously metropolitan left-leaning sensibilities you have. Someone actually said to me that going to a pub for lunch was very “Brexiteer” Confused

yorkshirepudddiing · 05/11/2020 16:42

@Pollynextdoor

So what’s your plan OP? What would you do differently?
Nobody needs to have a plan.

But people are allowed to be really fed up and pissed of, especially when the government have been as incompetent as ours.

3littlewords · 05/11/2020 16:43

whats your brilliant overview other than moaning that you want to go back to the pub?

Its sly comments like this that just proves your point OP! Clearly some people think everyone should be happy with the restrictions and not allowed to feel bad or sad about our loss of freedoms.

It is possible to understand and accept why the restrictions are in place and feel sad about it at the same time.

Bollss · 05/11/2020 16:43

I know exactly what you mean op Sad

NickVanDyke · 05/11/2020 16:44

I know I want to be Spanish or Italian where they are opposing a second lockdown.

We have no quality of life and no way out. We were told second lockdowns would never happen.

SquishySquirmy · 05/11/2020 16:45

Agree (except about the schools vs pubs thing.)

It is possible to care about the pandemic and about people's MH, loneliness, rising domestic violence, poverty, and other issues.
I hate it when I see people trying to guilt others for enjoying themselves (within the rules).
Making the best of a bad situation and trying to find some joy where we can should be encouraged not judged!
Empathy should be shown for those who are struggling, even if their problems are "not as bad as x, y,z".

During the black death, (when disease was not understood and when most people were illiterate and very superstitious) some people tried to fight the plague by marching around, whipping themselves and chanting prayers. The idea was that the more they suffered, the more penitent they were, and this would persuade God to get rid of the plague.....
Maybe no matter how far science and society progress, some notions are deeply rooted in our psyche...

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/11/2020 16:46

It didn’t take long for someone to come along and prove you right OP!

Holothane · 05/11/2020 16:48

Crap year I’m doing luxury quiet Christmas and I can’t wait, no one is going to make me feel guilty no carols services so we’ve loads of medieval carols and advent music, venison, the best stuff. For once we are going to treat ourselves and in-laws and my friend and cleaner whose now a friend rather than just a cleaner.

Fawnfour · 05/11/2020 16:49

No quality of life....
Life is miserable,.....
Your freedoms gone.....
This is ridiculous

megletthesecond · 05/11/2020 16:53

Can't you just be glad there'll be a life to get back to and you should all be healthy when this wave passes? It won't last forever.

friedshrimp · 05/11/2020 16:55

OP I totally get you.

@AtrociousCircumstance people are allowed to be fed up, pissed off or however else they feel. Comments like yours simply prove what OP is saying!!

Requinblanc · 05/11/2020 16:55

Yes a lot of virtue signalling and a lot of judgemental attitudes.

Not to mention a lack of common sense.

Some people seem to have persuaded themselves that everything is black and white, that lockdowns are the answer to everything and that we are in this situation only because of lack of compliance from part of the population.

When in fact many countries who had stricter lockdowns are exactly in the same place while places like Japan and Sweden that never lockdown are in better shape.

We have a rubbish government that pretty much messed up everything when it comes to trying to manage the pandemic. Let's not forget that.

As to the 'yeah but what would you do' brigade, there are very obvious steps.

From fixing testing/track and trace by actually having competent people leading these interventions rather than Tory mates like useless Dido; making better use of the Nightingales; government requisitioning private hospitals to care for patients for the winter period (if this is a war against a virus everyone has to pitch in and forget about 'profit' for a bit); proper/monitored quarantine in place for all travellers at government sites near the airports; shielding the vulnerable/the elderly but the rest of us carry on with masks/hygiene measures; universal basic income; be honest at last with the population as there is no scenario where we have 0 deaths or where the virus disappears completely. When I read about 'controlling' the virus. You don't control a virus, you mitigate its effects and adapt. we don't control the flu or the common cold or AIDs. We live with them and found ways to make their effect less harmful.

Humans are not made to stay indoors forever or to have no interaction with others or to live as obedient robots which is why these repeat lockdowns are a doomed strategy.

Pollynextdoor · 05/11/2020 16:56

Define no quality of life.

Personally I am sick to death of the moaning. I am not referring to those have a real reason to moan. Those who have lost their jobs or suffer from ill health.
It’s rubbish for all of us but sick of people throwing “no freedom” and “no quality of life” around because they can’t go to the pub or see their mum for a month. Get a grip on yourself.

Duckwit · 05/11/2020 16:59

I totally get what you mean. It does feel like having any fun has become frowned upon.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 05/11/2020 17:00

It’s not really comparable to most situations. You can’t risk assess this for yourself as actions can have consequences for others.

Things will go back to normal at some point. The less we mix, the less the virus spreads. Other countries have been stricter and are in far better places than we are. So many here just don’t comply or can’t forgo some things for a while to keep everyone safe and get us all in a better place so that things can return.
