It feels enjoyment of life has become socially unacceptable

Firstly I am.not against the current nor previous restrictions. I am aware of the sacrifices and difficulties faced by frontline NHS workers. I am also aware of the sacrifices made by those who were killed in the 2 world wars. But it is beginning to feel as if there is a nationwide perhaps even worldwide competition to see who can out misery the other. The utter utter drivel posted here during the Spring restrictions about how everyone's neighbours were having parties and how someone buying a chocolate bar would lead to bodies bursting out of hospitals, the sick sick air of Hyacinth Bucket meets Margaret Thatcher sanctimoniousness that seems to be everywhere, the compulsory addition of "the fuck" to the imperative "stay at home", the way young and poorer people have been thrown under a bus socially and economically, the "close pubs open schools" mantra. I'm just sick to death of it, & genuinely cannot ever see how a quality of life, friends, bars, concerts, trips away will ever return. It feels like everyone has turned into a curtain twitching moralist, it is illegal not to have a frontline NHS NHS worker in your family and we should never ever ever utter any words of sadness for the old life because people died in the Second World War. I hate what life has become.

@Didyousaynutella

Not loving right now. But attempting to use it as a chance to slow down and hibernate a bit. Always been guilty of doing too much. Have a year full of fun booked from spring going forward. Will come out of hibernation and go on holiday, go to concerts, shows etc. But with a bit more discernment than before. Can’t wait. That’s the only way to see it!
i'm really not trying to piss on your parade here, but do you deep down believe that full on concerts will be happening in spring / summer?
frozendaisy · 06/11/2020 13:29

Actually I'm changing that statement to we used to love going to the pub with the kids for a couple, newspaper, puzzles, say hello to the village dogs and various locals, people you get to know over time.

The pub can be a vital social hub, not just a piss hole.

And we will go back to how it was again. Because many want to.

Didyousaynutella · 06/11/2020 13:38

“Trustthegene” concerts by the late spring/ summer probably. Our lion king tickets got transferred from January to mid May. They are obviously planning on it. I can’t see it not happening by then.
I’ve got festival tickets for July.
There will be a vaccine starting to roll out by December/Jan.

LindaEllen · 06/11/2020 13:48

@RaggieDolls

I agree. I would add one thing. I'm utterly sick of the apples and pairs comparison of Covid and WW2. They are not comparable and the fact the population have faced harder situations in the past is totally irrelevant to the here and now.
Yes, the war comparisons get to me as well. 'I lived in London, and the pubs remained open all the way through the blitz!!!!' Yes but 'the blitz' wasn't bloody contagious, was it. They're not the same thing!

And also, just because people went through shit times in the past shouldn't take away our right to moan about what we perceive as suffering now, even if it is preferable to what happened during the war.

MadameBlobby · 06/11/2020 13:50

Totally agree this is a fucking shitshow and not sustainable on any level.

i mean i really hope you're right but i am just not sure i can see it!

Yes i've heard about the vaccine role out, but then i have heard so many different things i do not know what to believe! Grin

Didyousaynutella · 06/11/2020 14:17

It can’t go on post spring. The economy won’t survive. I was happy with the first lockdown and anticipated there would be second nevcesary winter lockdown. But that’s it folks. After that we take out chances and get on with life. No other choice.

Bathroom12345 · 06/11/2020 14:34

I see the doom and gloom death rates are now being questioned and Teresa May is asking whether the stats have been used to justify the lockdown. I honestly think we have gone too far with this. If we are trying to save people at the end of their lives anyway to survive a few more months I am sorry but its not worth it.

Our young people's future is at stake here. I am now seeing people asking to take furlough because, they are worried/shielding granny/etc and this cannot continue.

BuggersMuddle · 06/11/2020 14:41

I agree with you OP. Some of the 'Covid police' - both online and IRL - are nearly as annoying as some of the Covidiots / conspiracy nuts.

I think people need to accept that everyone will have good days and bad days; we don't all have the same level of resilience at all times and actually what's unimportant to one person, might be really important to someone else.

We all need to be a little understanding & have some common sense. So if you're happily WFH on full salary, maybe don't moan on about how boring it is to someone who's lost their job, but that's no different from the social norms we would observe outside a pandemic.

That said, I think the messaging from the government and in press hasn't help with this. There are things we're allowed to care about & others that are seen as frivolous. Oddly I've not seen many complaining about the people going for haircuts and beauty treatments, but god forbid someone is missing something unimportant like their regular pub meet up or gym class.

Whilst I know we need people to comply with restrictions, I've been amazed at some of what I've seen up here in Scotland. So many people don't seem to understand that permitted != 'safe' and equally 'advised against' doesn't automatically mean hugely risky. Unless we want a full lockdown, I think that as much as possible, we need to let others get on with managing their own risks and priorities within the law.

IcedPurple · 06/11/2020 14:48

Also, predictions of eternal doom, given confidently and sans evidence.

"We're never going back to the way things were. Deal with it."

"There's never going to be an effective vaccine, I'm afraid."

"I'm sorry but you're just going to have to accept that your old way of life is over."

Henio · 06/11/2020 15:16

I'm in two mind about this, I understand how you feel but I also keep thinking... This definitely won't be forever and also we have it sooo much better than a lot of people around the world. I'm just getting on with it, adapting to the current way of living and making the best out of what I can do, it'll end eventually.

psychomath · 06/11/2020 18:08

Tell your parents to stop whingeing, TibetanTerrier - it's not like they were living in a concentration camp, is it?

Couldn't agree more.
outofthemoon · 06/11/2020 19:15

Completely agree, OP.

Also the most sanctimonious are the busy-baking-with-the-kids-look-at-the-lovely-birds-look-at-the-lovely-sky brigade.
Here both young adult dcs have lost their jobs, no furlough, no support, locked down in Liverpool and London in single rooms in shared houses. My job may go anytime. DH has chronic asthma & very elderly dm to worry about.
Not going to the pub is not a problem. Christmas is not a problem. Will dcs ever see their Gran alive again, work again, is.
It's utterly miserable. And we should be allowed to say so.

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 19:33

Its the eternal almost gleeful doom and gloom brigade that gets me

"Well just wait til no deal brexit"

"Theatres won't be happening for at least 3-5 more years if ever"

"Even if there is a vaccine dont expect it to be very effective"

"The life we had before is gone, get used to it"

And now all the Denmark mink covid stuff feeling like we are on the verge of another pandemic

I honestly don't think I can take it anymore. Its the lowest I've ever felt and don't see it getting better.

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 19:38

We are on a verge on another pandemic with the monks in Denmark. It’s not just doom and gloom, it’s the news. It’s not necessarily doom and gloom, but a new reality is coming which we have to adjust to.

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 19:38

Monks not monks🤪

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 19:38

Minks!!

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 19:39

Polly kind of proving my point

How is that helpful to say to me

Do you have any idea what kind of effect those words could have

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 19:42

Well it’s up to you if you want to stay up to date on what is going on in the world.

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 19:45

My "favourite" so far is "the new normal".
It infuriates me! It makes itsound like it is here to STAY!
No please. I want my every day normal back.

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 19:47

Well it’s up to you if you want to stay up to date on what is going on in the world.

But its not up to me is it because people like you come on threads which aren't even about that and say the things you do

How exactly is knowing the thing about minks going to help. What can I personally do about it

All that knowledge does is make me feel even more suicidal than I already am

If I didn't have my little boy to think of id be long gone by now

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 19:47

Minks are so cute! I love minks and ferrets!
It is such a shameSadSad
And yes, the new are the new horror films channel

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 19:47

I meant the news!

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 19:49
