It feels enjoyment of life has become socially unacceptable

Firstly I am.not against the current nor previous restrictions. I am aware of the sacrifices and difficulties faced by frontline NHS workers. I am also aware of the sacrifices made by those who were killed in the 2 world wars. But it is beginning to feel as if there is a nationwide perhaps even worldwide competition to see who can out misery the other. The utter utter drivel posted here during the Spring restrictions about how everyone's neighbours were having parties and how someone buying a chocolate bar would lead to bodies bursting out of hospitals, the sick sick air of Hyacinth Bucket meets Margaret Thatcher sanctimoniousness that seems to be everywhere, the compulsory addition of "the fuck" to the imperative "stay at home", the way young and poorer people have been thrown under a bus socially and economically, the "close pubs open schools" mantra. I'm just sick to death of it, & genuinely cannot ever see how a quality of life, friends, bars, concerts, trips away will ever return. It feels like everyone has turned into a curtain twitching moralist, it is illegal not to have a frontline NHS NHS worker in your family and we should never ever ever utter any words of sadness for the old life because people died in the Second World War. I hate what life has become.

I agree OP - everyone has become so judgemental of the views of others. I hate it. Everyone is entitled to their own views. Personally I think those who are vulnerable should put themselves into self isolation if they are worried and leave the rest of us to get on with life.

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 19:51

No I'm not ok, I'm really not

He is 4

He is a little darling and I keep going for him but I'm so unhappy and feel like this is it forever now.

jambeforeclottedcream · 06/11/2020 19:56

I agree went out on Wednesday so before lockdown. Bearly mentioned it at work when normally I would because I'd be made to feel like some sort of pariah

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 19:57

Lots of hugs and handholding @Completmentfille
Life is very miserable at the time being. This is draining the life out of us.
No going out. No seeing other people. No getting help with childcare. No getting enough care if you are ill. No going shopping. No even going to the office to work.

It is all a constant NO NO NO NO
But you know it is not forever.
And you have your little darling boy.
Do you live alone with him?
Do you manage to go for walks with him?

Bananasandorangesss · 06/11/2020 19:58

@Completmentfille sorry to hear you’re not doing well with this. Do what you need to do to feel normal and live as normally as possible. Mental health is number one here. I’ve a little boy the same age as yours and lockdown was so hard, he really didn’t cope with it either. I will be having a friend and their child over tomorrow. Some things are more important in the here and now than the potential risk of something which to the very great majority of us isn’t serious. Go out, meet a friend, resume normality as much as you can Flowers

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 20:00

Its just the constant doom and gloom
Brexit etc

The thing with minks has seriously pushed me over the edge this evening

I live with DH but he is away a lot for work (key worker)

You do realise things like this have happened before and life has return to normal don't you? Your voice of Doom is almost funny it's so silly.

RaggieDolls · 06/11/2020 20:04

Perfect example of this 'banning enjoyment' on my local Facebook tonight. A local cafe was offering a takeaway meal deal at lunchtime to try and keep their business going.

Lots of people liked the post and suddenly a woman appears stating 'this is just the sort of thing that will encourage people to meet people outside their household. So selfish' Hmm

Why? Why is it selfish to sell a lunchtime deal to people from a table outside a closed cafe?? So bored of this type of statement.

Sunnysideup999 · 06/11/2020 20:11

No second lock down because it would be disastrous socially and economically, apparently. Yet here we are. People have lost their minds over this.
Yes it’s terribly terribly sad that people have died from the virus. But the response to this virus has been disproportionate.

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 20:29

@Completmentfille
It is doom year indeed. Look at the positives, always keep your eyes on that.
I am scared about all this at times too. We all are.
Some people come here to talk about it because it helps them to get their head around those feelings.
Sometimes we feel it is better not to know, it gets too much.
I just say: my family is healthy, I am healthy, we are together, we have roof/ clothes/ food. I am happy.
I know there are much more to life, but this makes me put things into perspective and stops my head spinning around with too much doom. It works for me.
Have you found somthing to focus on when it starts being too much?

BlueBlancmange · 06/11/2020 20:33

@Pollynextdoor

We are on a verge on another pandemic with the monks in Denmark. It’s not just doom and gloom, it’s the news. It’s not necessarily doom and gloom, but a new reality is coming which we have to adjust to.
No implications have been confirmed yet, so it's probably better to be a bit less hasty making such announcements.

Thank you

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 20:43

Well Denmark is culling all minks to hopefully get it under control but there is a real worry that the virus has mutated. I am just quoting on what the Danish news sources and PM is saying.

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 20:50

I like this article about it

www.statnews.com/2020/11/05/spread-of-mutated-coronavirus-in-danish-mink-hits-all-the-scary-buttons-but-fears-may-be-overblown/

More reassuring

And Carl Bergstrom is v well respected and knows what he's talking about

BlueBlancmange · 06/11/2020 20:51

@Thewiseoneincognito

Do you mean by this you think we won't be returning to any semblance of normality for an extremely long time, if ever? I have seen a number of your posts and they often make great proclamations that life is pretty much going to be shite forever more. What are you basing your extremely pessimistic prognosis on? I don't think I have seen any experts being anywhere near as negative as you. The news about the minks is not great, but that only came to light yesterday and no implications have yet been confirmed, so most of your posts are not based on that. It really does come across as though you just enjoy jumping on threads to be the voice of doom. And I am also curious why you chose your particular username.

Our lives have changed so much, but we must find joy in what we have now because this is our new normal. We’re not going back to the old world, not for an extremely long time, if at all ever

BlueBlancmange · 06/11/2020 20:54

I think it is probably known that it has mutated, just not what the implications for immunity or vaccines might be. So it is too early to be stating that we are on the cusp of a new pandemic.
AuntyPonsonby · 06/11/2020 21:05

I agree. I would add one thing. I'm utterly sick of the apples and pairs comparison of Covid and WW2. They are not comparable and the fact the population have faced harder situations in the past is totally irrelevant to the here and now.

I disagree. I think the WW2 comparison is worthwhile. It's just totally misapplied.

In wartime people risked their lives for the greater good and to protect our way of life. As a nation we were perfectly happy to send our youngest, strongest and most able to take their chances.

Our way of life is now threatened by a virus. To keep things running we need some people to risk their lives for the greater good. This time it's predominantly the elderly.

Oh for heavens sake if you want to start on another conspiracy theory doom-mongering start your own thread on it. I think if people are posting on here that they are struggling this is the last thing they want to read

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 21:50

It’s a news story. The Danish government and scientists are very worried. They are not culling the mink population for a laugh. It’s not a conspiracy theory.
No one knows what will happen. Hopefully they will be able to stop corona 2.
We are so used to being in control and horrible news story happening to other people which is why this is very unsettling for us and we want to pretend it’s not happening.

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 21:55

I dont want to pretend it isnt happening, but how do you think you are helping anything by making such comments on a thread where people are struggling? How does me knowing about it help? How does it make my life or my son's life better to know? What do you suggest that I personally can do about it?

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 21:59

The Danish government and scientists are very worried

The fact they're worried doesn't mean that this is corona take 2. It means they've taken notice of the past 12 months and are applying caution. Which is a good thing.

There are thousands of mutations in #SARSCoV2 arising constantly. The fact that a few have been observed in minks will not change the strains in circulation in humans. If they were beneficial for the virus to infect its human host, they would be at high frequency already

The above from Francois Balloux

right now these mink strains make up less that 1/100,000 of the circulating human cases. Even if they do evade vaccines (which I doubt) we're talking about an initial 0.001% decrease in efficacy of a vaccine we hope to be 70% effective.

And from Carl T Bergstrom

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 22:01

@Completmentfille are you sure you want to be in the mink thread?

Completmentfille · 06/11/2020 22:07

Not really no but I have adhd and I'm afraid I hyper focus on things

MushMonster · 06/11/2020 22:12

I understand.
Other people do try to deal with their feelings by talking about it, and that is what is going on with the minks at the moment, and potential risks.
It has all become a potential risk this year. All this unknown. It may be, it could be...

Pollynextdoor · 06/11/2020 22:12

Actually the mutated virus is already observed in humans and spreading ie into care homes. The concern is that the virus can spread between animals and humans.
I am afraid when you are on SM, you cannot tell people what to write. This is not your personal thread.
