Nor any of the other shops unfairly dodging the lockdown closure by claiming they are essential (someone on another thread's, local shoe shop, local branch of Next) etc.

It's bloody ridiculous. The more we are out and about, the more this virus has a chance to keep spreading. Don't click and collect from your local business, place orders online from them or phone up and arrange delivery.

Just stop f**king going out. If you don't HAVE to go out for work, essential shopping - ie food or medicine, just stay at home.

If you don't, don't moan when bloody Boris is on our screens on 2nd December saying the lockdown is extended.

Just because you can type a goady, moany, guilt-tripping thread on the internet, doesn't mean you should.

I think getting outside for walks and gardens helped a lot of people hugely with their mental health last time. With dark nights and bad weather I think DIY will be what people turn to as a way of keeping occupied. I wouldn't plan to go out wandering and browsing but I might pop to B&Q to buy paint.

TicTacTwo · 05/11/2020 08:26

@randomer

How would you like it if you end up on a ventilator you Range shopping bauble hunters?
My understanding is that ventilators aren't being used very often for Covid patients now. Grin

@ProfessorInkling

Are you one of those people who got all frothy about others popping out for chocolate and wine in March?
Are you one of those selfish people who puts yourself first all the time?
BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 05/11/2020 08:26

I'm with you OP. The more people go out, the harder it will be to contain/stop this virus. The virus doesn't care why someone went out.

Jroseforever · 05/11/2020 08:26

@PurpleHoodie

(I do by the way. We are a higher earning household with cars ++ however we give a shit about other people who are not)
It was important we knew that you are high income with multiple cars... why? Grin
dementedpixie · 05/11/2020 08:26

The Range is good for craft stuff. Our also has diy stuff, a garden centre and pet stuff area. It used to be Homebase and us much the same as that

PinkSpring · 05/11/2020 08:27

Meh, if it's open and I fancy going, I will go. Same with I got an email saying our local Smyths toys is open for collection so I will continue to order stuff and go get it for Christmas as it's "allowed"

starfish4 · 05/11/2020 08:30

Primarily it's about getting numbers down, but obviously the government are concerned about jobs, mental well being. I know four people who've had Covid, two lost their lives, two still struggling months later so for me, I'll only be going to places like the Range if I genuinely need something, but not for a potter.

PurpleHoodie · 05/11/2020 08:30

Wear gloves when out shopping (or keep hands effectively clean).

Wash hands EVERY time you use the toilet. A message that especially needs to go out to men.

Stay in if you have a raised temperature.

Wear a face covering if possible.

Stand away from other people.

Don't pick up items for sale unless you are going to purchase it where possible.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 05/11/2020 08:30

I will go where the fuck I want within the laws and guidance so that includes the Range

user1471562688 · 05/11/2020 08:30

What an arsehole. Hilarious responses by the way! Made my day!

Ori3 · 05/11/2020 08:31

I agree with you OP. It’s not a decision that was taken lightly by the govt. & it’s really disheartening to see just by this thread alone how flippant people are. It’s not a joke; Boris saying that Dr’s needing to choose between who gets treatment & who is left to suffer their fate doesn’t make me laugh I must admit.

It is selfish of people to go to unnecessary shops during a national lockdown that’s intended to save not only lives of patients but also to prevent health professionals being put in a position most of us hope never to experience. But that’s human stupidity for you I’m afraid. Many of us can’t see beyond our noses.

WindChimeTinkle · 05/11/2020 08:31

@Torri67 no-one cares what you think. I'm going to the garden centre today, just because I can😁

lazylump72 · 05/11/2020 08:31

OP this is not a lock down like the previous one..the government stated that. If like me you have to queue up with the kids on the school run,go to work in a school of 700 people staff and kids,do the shopping,go to the pet shop,get the petrol etc etc etc then I think a trip to the range is the least of my problems...all this whilst not being able to see my grown up kids and parents and dealing with my husband who works in manufacturing with another 400 strangers...your sentiment is fine but for some people it is unrealistic and the government know this too thats why its more of a relaxed lockdown this time.I have had 2 elderly relatives die lately one was 96 with so many health problems they have been on borrowed time for ages,she had a heart attack and was unable to recover properly at such a great age but cause of death was listed as covid...it is crackers and makes the hysteria far worse for people.Turn the news off and I swear your depression will ease.Please dont judge people for coping the best they can in this difficult time I am sure everyone is doing their best in these awful times.

Don't think this has gone the way you hoped op; you thought everyone would agree with you Shock

Genevieva · 05/11/2020 08:33

Yawn. There isn't a Covid case within at least 30 miles of where I live. The lockdown is damaging local businesses. The more that are able to get an exemption the better as far as I am concerned.

As other have said, the evidence did not support the lockdown, yet MPs of all parties voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking basic civil liberties away from the entire country because their party leaders say so. There were over 500 votes in favour and only 39 dissenters, 34 of whom were Conservative, so it isn't just the government - it is most of the Labour bench too. Everyone should read the legislation that has been passed. It is deeply concerning. Particularly the ban on demonstrations and the fact that:

"(6) A relevant person exercising the power in paragraph (5)(c) to remove a person from a gathering may use reasonable force, if necessary, in exercise of the power."

So not a police officer with specialist training, but anyone employed to break up a group of people or enforce the act. Any MP who voted for this clearly does not understand their basic obligations as an MP and parliament's obligation to uphold international law.

PurpleDaisies · 05/11/2020 08:34

Wear gloves when out shopping (or keep hands effectively clean).

This isn’t recommended by any official advice.

WanderingMilly · 05/11/2020 08:34

Businesses will shut down completely if we don't use them, I shall shop where I like. I will keep away from others, wear gloves and masks, socially distance and sanitise.....as safe as we can get at the moment, so no, I won't stay away.

Besides, since I have to go to work (school job) and I caught COVID just before the last lockdown from a child at school, I don't personally see shops - essential or not - as major transmitters of the virus. Stop being over dramatic.

LEELULUMPKIN · 05/11/2020 08:34

I think most folk have also wised up to the fact that this won't be over in 4 weeks either.

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 05/11/2020 08:34

Love the replies. Agree especially with Picsinred

OP it’s open so people will go and you frothing won’t stop them. This thread has been useful though in that I was wondering if many of these shops were still open, so cheers 😄

pastandpresent · 05/11/2020 08:34

I don't think shops are particularly high risk, people don't stand close and chat etc. What is essential depends on personal circumstances. And if the shop can remain open with safe measures, it good for people, as well as for the economy.

Teateaandmoretea · 05/11/2020 08:34

@covidiot (apt user name)

What is contemptible is the destruction of our country and all the the war heroes fought for and people have worked for since.

Crakeandoryx · 05/11/2020 08:35

Excellent I need paint. I didn't leave my house for months first lockdown to the point I almost got social anxiety and became very depressed.

I won't be doing that this time. I work in a very stressful sector as a key worker. Pressures have increased so much that I'm now off work because my mental health is shot.

I will be doing what I need to and going to the range for a tin of paint or a picture frame should not be judged. You have no idea the lives that others live and these things are still doable with common sense, good distancing, good hygiene. Covid is a risk but MH is vital.
