Masks at school drop off

Sorry if there's already a thread. Our primary school have asked us to wear a mask at pick up and drop off from this week (adults). Has anyone else's school done the same? I'm not really against it just surprised, and will probably forget my mask a few times before it becomes a habit like it is for the shops.

We were already meant to queue with social distancing and be one adult per child. Most do respect these but not all. There was a bit of gathering to chat and I suppose they want to limit it.

Ours just has too. I wonder if there's been some recommendation.

I was surprised for 2 reasons.

Firstly - I didn't think outside was a particular risk with covid.

Secondly therr is far more risk inside the school where they arent wearing masks, then the 5mins outside!

Ignoringequally · 04/11/2020 14:01

Yes, we’ve had to wear them at pick up and drop off for around 6 weeks now.

frozendaisy · 04/11/2020 14:01

Just got email saying due to new regulations child (Y7) has to wear "face covering" in school everywhere except whilst in class. But they can wear in class if they want.

Guess it's just to make sure schools are doing all they can to remain open.

I wish they would at ours tbh. Tiny entrance gate as a pinch point to drop off/collect plus too many parents nattering on the narrow pavement outside as you are trying to get past them. I get some odd looks for wearing one, and I think I've only seen one other parent wearing one.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/11/2020 14:03

Ours did at the end of the second week back. It works well & everyone wears one.

beela · 04/11/2020 14:04

Ours has, from this week. I don't really see the problem... It's certainly not going to anyone any harm and might just help.

helpfulperson · 04/11/2020 14:05

Now required in level 3 areas in Scotland

Numberblock7 · 04/11/2020 14:08

I think the risk is low outside but I am one of the few parents at school that wears one anyway at pickup. It seems to signal to people that I don’t particularly want them too close nor do I want to chat, and it’s only on for a couple of minutes so no big deal. I don’t bother at drop off, children can arrive over a 20 minute period so it’s very spread out and I’m only at the gate for seconds.

storminabuttercup · 04/11/2020 14:08

Required at ours too, I've been setting a reminder on my phone as I was worried I'd forget.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/11/2020 14:11

No, at least not yet. They do have a half hour pick up and drop offs though so it's not as densely packed.

Proudpeacock · 04/11/2020 14:13

Ours has been saying this since we started in September. Perhaps because we can't fully socially distance as you have to walk past one classroom door to get to another.

Jemma2907 · 04/11/2020 14:15

We have 30min pick up/drop offs, a one way system and 2 different entrances/exits into the school. We've also been wearing masks since they came into force in shops etc. I'm happy they're doing everything they can to keep the little ones in school and its not any bother really.

Ignoringequally · 04/11/2020 14:15

We have staggered pick up/drop offs, pretty strict social distancing and masks. I haven’t been within 2m of another parent since they went back in august, but we still wear masks!
On the plus side we also haven’t had a case of Covid in school yet.

cosmo30 · 04/11/2020 14:15

Ours have, only since the start of the week though

Ignoringequally · 04/11/2020 14:16

Oh and a one way system on site.

HotChocolate12 · 04/11/2020 14:17

All of the schools mine go to have asked for face masks since half term, I believe it has been requested by the county. My year 7 has had to wear a face mask in communal areas since they went back in September

GravityFalls · 04/11/2020 14:24

We’ve had to wear masks on school grounds since about the start of October. Pretty pointless for me as I use wraparound so am usually the only one picking up at any given time but I’m happy to do it. Kids don’t seem to notice at all.

Grapesoda7 · 04/11/2020 14:25

My primary has asked for this since the first week or two back in September. Also a one way system. We were a local lockdown area though, fingers crossed no cases reported yet.

aToadOnTheWhole · 04/11/2020 14:27

From the Monday of the second week back in September. I keep a mask in every coat pocket, it's habit now to check before I leave the house.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 04/11/2020 14:29

Yes ours just have - I don’t mind , Some of the parents don’t seem to grasp social distancing at all .

Givemeabreakpls · 04/11/2020 14:30

Our primary has asked for masks at pickup and drop off from this week. I’d say only about 20% are complying and many are gathering just outside the school gates for a natter without masks or SD. I’ve actually just been to a beauty salon where one of the therapists was doing treatments without a mask or visor - I left - so maybe it’s just my little town that has the worst compliance ever

Mintjulia · 04/11/2020 14:31

Yes, on-foot parents must wear masks at drop off and pick up, and those in cars must stay in their cars.

Parents are not allowed on school grounds outside of drop off & pick up except by appt. And appts are by zoom now.

Makemake · 04/11/2020 14:31

My son's primary started this in September. It was a good thing as it's reminded parents that it's not all back to normal, which a lot seemed to forget. It was beyond a joke with the gatherings and hugging going on everyday. Now we've got more people working from home, furlough, etc, a trip to the school gates has become a family outing! Sad

SaffyWall · 04/11/2020 14:32

We've been doing this since September - the playground is tiny and, despite staggering pick-ups/drop-offs and a one-way system, it gets very crowded so all parents/carers were asked to wear masks and everyone seems to have complied.

Ferrero12345 · 04/11/2020 14:33

Ours have been doing this for weeks - a council wide directive to all schools.
