Masks at school drop off

HelloMist · 04/11/2020 13:57

Sorry if there's already a thread. Our primary school have asked us to wear a mask at pick up and drop off from this week (adults). Has anyone else's school done the same? I'm not really against it just surprised, and will probably forget my mask a few times before it becomes a habit like it is for the shops.

We were already meant to queue with social distancing and be one adult per child. Most do respect these but not all. There was a bit of gathering to chat and I suppose they want to limit it.

Ours have been doing this since middle of September I thought most schools were dng this already

ILookAtTheFloor · 04/11/2020 14:37

It's started this week at my children's school. Pointless virtue signalling if you ask me. Plenty of space on the playground and transmission outside is so very unlikely.

I dislike it intensely and I'm not an anti mask person particularly. It just feels unnecessary and for appearances.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 04/11/2020 14:38

If it could make even a tiny difference to the trajectory of the virus then for the 5 minutes of wearing it, I'm not sure I'd have many objections.

Totallycluelessoverhere · 04/11/2020 14:39

Ours issues the same request this week. I feel like the parents who haven’t complied with the previous requests to socially distance in the playground have massively contributed to the requests for masks to be worn.
Is it really so hard to refrain from gathering in small groups to gossip whilst waiting for the kids to come out?

MrsWombat · 04/11/2020 14:39

"Strongly suggested" at mine and compulsory at my child's school. Even though people are outside it's because everyone is unlikely to be able to remain 2m apart because of various pinch points. At both schools parents have to be on site to drop off at an inner gate. If they were literally dropping off at the front gate and didn't come onto the premises at all then I would imagine that masks would not be strongly suggested.

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 04/11/2020 15:35

We've had a request today from our primary school for it to start tomorrow.

I'm not anti mask and will happily wear one indoors etc but this is pointless. We know from various contact tracing studies that outdoor transmission is very rare. All this will do is give people a false sense of security. Where I am, everyone wears masks in the supermarket but they no longer bother to social distance. They think the mask gives them a shield or something.

There's loads of space for pick ups at our school as well. Totally unnecessary in my view.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/11/2020 15:55

Ours has ordered it from this week.

Fucking pointless.
It's like putting your flour through a colander to double check there are no lumps in it after you'd already put it through a sieve. Outside on a windswept playground is by far the greatest defence.

I can't wear the fucking things anyway, and I can't cope with 2/3s of people's faces being obliterated and the mumbly muffling it's just too much processing to cope with so I end up spending 20 minutes per day staring at the playground trying to cope with this stupid world with all the stupid harms it inflicts on us for the sake of looking like we're doing something.
Death by a thousand cuts.

Keeping 2m, I can handle.

scrivette · 04/11/2020 15:58

Ours asked at the beginning of last term. We are collecting the children from their fire exit doors outside and walking across the large field. However the parents (especially KS1 parents) all stand so close together that I am not surprised the school asked.

iolaus · 04/11/2020 16:04

Yes, I thought that they should have done it before hand

BunsyGirl · 04/11/2020 16:16

My DC’s school has required this since JUNE. Can’t believe some schools have left it so late!

EsmeeMerlin · 04/11/2020 16:22

Yes since September. Also staggered school times so by the time I pick up my son there is not that many parents around. Not sure how useful it is, when I walk to the school many parents have taken their masks off as soon as they walk out the gate so I still have to pass many people without masks although some like me do keep their masks on the whole journey.

MillieEpple · 04/11/2020 16:27

we've just asked parents too. The reason being is that we get so many complaints from parents that other parents don't distance themselves and they don't seem to want to ask other parents to move away, and we find the parents don't distance themselves from our staff either. Some of the staff are in vulnerable categories. I have mixed feelings in I do believe the outside is the best defence, but then I have seen people standing so close to a vulnerable teacher that i feel its not a surprise she'd like those that can wear a mask to do so and basically we all want the school to actually stay open.

Trinpy · 04/11/2020 16:34

My dcs school has insisted on mask wearing for drop offs/pick ups since September. Other local primaries don't seem to have this rule though. It does seem a bit pointless but I don't mind too much. It's a lot less restricting wearing one outside than inside.

mrsknottschicken · 04/11/2020 16:43

Our school has just asked us to do this (email sent today). I’ve no problem with it and I was getting fed up with the lack of social distancing in the playground anyway.

Crappyfridays7 · 04/11/2020 16:46

We started this this week.
Don’t like the things and struggle to hear but it’s what we’ve been asked to do.
I also wear them for 11 hours a day at work and have for months annoying people moan about it for 10 mins before and after school unless exempt

SellFridges · 04/11/2020 16:51

We’ve done this since Day 2. I don’t really see the point in outdoor spaces, but I’m not one of the idiots who hangs around in the playground when asked not to or stands too close to other people. Because of them, we must. They carry on and don’t bother wearing one.

WankPuffins · 04/11/2020 16:53

We have been asked to wear them since the second week back in September.

3littlewords · 04/11/2020 17:02

My dc school has been doing this since late September, its only a few minutes each drop off its no big deal

PeachiceT · 04/11/2020 17:05

We have been asked to do this since last term , I just keep a mask in my coat pocket. Most parents are complying and it's a big junior school of over 350 pupils.

MarshaBradyo · 04/11/2020 17:06

Yes we started last half term

FireUnderpants · 04/11/2020 18:00

Ours emailed Monday morning to say masks were now needed. On Monday afternoon they had added barriers to create queues to all the doors. So instead of everyone spread out over grass verges and the onto the edge of a field we're in rows like cattle. They also reminded everyone of the 15min drop off and pick up window to avoid crowding, but everyone still gets there to wait for the doors to open.

MrsJonesAndMe · 04/11/2020 18:44

We had an email yesterday. I'm not fussed either way. There's a definite pinch point at the gate where people just seem to stop and pile up Confused after standing behind lines to ensure distancing up to that point.

LilacPebbles · 04/11/2020 19:34

We've not been allowed near school grounds without one on since before the summer holidays.

Jrobhatch29 · 04/11/2020 19:44

My kids school asked us to wear them a while ago

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 04/11/2020 19:51

We were asked to wear them in mid September. As a KS2 parent we don't go onto the school grounds either.
