Masks at school drop off

Sorry if there's already a thread. Our primary school have asked us to wear a mask at pick up and drop off from this week (adults). Has anyone else's school done the same? I'm not really against it just surprised, and will probably forget my mask a few times before it becomes a habit like it is for the shops.

We were already meant to queue with social distancing and be one adult per child. Most do respect these but not all. There was a bit of gathering to chat and I suppose they want to limit it.

The kids primary have been asking for masks for weeks now, this week they are being quite forceful (calling out parents who are maskless Shock)

I understand it in a way as the layout of the school means parents cannot help but to congregate in certain places - even with staggered pick ups and drop offs.

It sucks though.

Total virtual signalling, clutching at straws.

My DC school is on the side of a perpetually windswept hill in Ireland. Windy and rainy, or else rainy and windy.

I am highly interested in seeing the science behind transmission rates in such an outdoor setting as school pick-up times.

We've been wearing them on the school site to drop off and pick up from when they went back in September, along with only one parent being allowed and social distancing / one way measures around the playground.

Picking my DS up in the pouring rain, mask on and hood up I had to tell the teacher who I was there for (she had no idea) and then my DS just walked on past me. I think it's a worrying safeguarding issue.

We ve been doing this since a couple of weeks before half term. I didn’t get the email though so the first day it came in I was the only bloody parent there without one!! We also have to stand on a suitably distanced cross in the playground. Everyone sticks to it.

StillCounting123 · 04/11/2020 22:31

oneday this has made me think.... Can really see what you mean about the safeguarding issue. I was stood in playground today waiting for DD and looking around I felt a bit disoriented as I couldn't immediately recognise people.

I'm in Wales and our schools asked us to wear masks since sept

midnightstar66 · 04/11/2020 23:05

Yes, I work in a school and this has been requested by the LA so all the schools in our council area are asking this. Staff now have to wear masks in public areas too (corridors, staff room when not eating, playground when parents present etc)

Toothsil · 05/11/2020 08:54

Ours asked quite a few weeks ago for parents to wear masks at the gate, and all children have had to wear them in communal areas for over month now - that's ages 9-13.

Todaytomorrow09 · 05/11/2020 08:55

We’ve been doing it since they went back in September.

Aragog · 05/11/2020 09:11

After the first week back in September we asked parents to wear masks in the playground for pick up and drop off.
It had become clear that due to the layout it was impossible to ensure everyone was 2m apart from one another and some parts became bottle necks.

Parents and staff are still wearing them at these times and compliance is very high.

No one complained to school direct. I'm sure there are some who aren't happy. However, almost all have just got on with it. They just drop their mask to give their child a kiss goodbye and that's it. All fine.

randomsabreuse · 05/11/2020 09:18

L3 Scotland so yep. Been soggy 2 out of the days so can't see a bloody thing (glasses) and putting mask on is 2 hand job so have to do before leaving home or risk losing 2 year old.

Not sure how effective they'll be when soaked through by pouring rain when that happens...

ohnothisagain · 05/11/2020 19:39

Ours has done that since september. only reasonable I think - why take more risks than necessary?

BunsyGirl · 05/11/2020 20:03

My DCs school has done this since June when they first went back after lockdown. Surprised that some schools are only just putting it in place.

Lau52 · 05/11/2020 20:48

Our school started 2nd week back in September. Once they saw parents congregating and chatting at close distance they brought it in.

Spacemonkey2016 · 05/11/2020 21:07

Our nursery have emailed today saying we must wear masks at drop offs/pick up now. I can't see the point, given we're not allowed in the building and it's easy to social distance in the (normally very small) queue. I feel awful that my 9 month old starts in a few weeks. She's never been in the building, won't get settling in visits, I'm not allowed to take her in the room even on her first day and now I won't even be able to give her a reassuring smile. Feels cruel and shit. Going to look into clear masks.

Stellaris22 · 05/11/2020 21:14

Our primary school is now asking parents to wear masks. But. It is only because they couldn't stop parents congregating at the gates, if those parents weren't doing that then masks wouldn't be requested.

I was wearing a mask anyway so was reassured by the request.
