WHERE are people catching Covid?

I don't mean where in the country, I mean what settings? I know they lie a lot about it not spreading in schools but is there any data about where they are at least purporting that it's spreading?

Where are people catching Covid?

I've no idea OP but obviously not near me! I know 3 people who have had tests and only 1 who was positive. I'm in a High Alert/Tier 3 area too with friends who have been out at work rather than WFH.

Covid sometimes seems very surreal when it's all over the news but you just don't see it yourself.

MushMonster · 01/11/2020 08:29

And I do hope that they get ventilation systems in school/ work/ uni, not really open windows only, we may catch other thing in later months.

Faybian · 01/11/2020 08:30

There is overwhelming evidence that it is being spread predominantly in universities and schools. It is pathetic to close and ruin all the businesses that have spent money becoming 'covid secure' if the schools are staying open. The government seem to just want to be seen to be taking action but it's not going to have any effect except ruining more people.

Dh caught it at work. Large, heavy manufacturing place that can't close. I caught it from him in our home.

walksen · 01/11/2020 08:31

" In England, they are even refusing to cancel or adapt GCSEs/A Levels"

They will end up u turning on that last minute, just like they did on exam results, lockdown2, furlough and countless other times, probably leaking it to the times the Friday night before exam week!

At least Scotland already announced it.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 01/11/2020 08:34

I either got it at either the hospital, the supermarket or my daughters brought it home from school/nursery although neither have had any symptoms.

Lovemusic33 · 01/11/2020 08:34

So the places where it’s being spread remain open and they are closing the places where you are less at risk? I know no one wants schools and uni’s closed but I can’t see numbers dramatically decreasing when they remain open, meaning lockdown will last longer, possibly well into December and January?

PollyPelargonium52 · 01/11/2020 08:35

I presume 'Other' on the graph means supermarkets and the like.

PollyPelargonium52 · 01/11/2020 08:35

I really wish Boris had insisted on masks for secondary school both staff and pupils. Ds only wears one in communal areas and not in lessons. Although he is in classes of 20 which helps.

Youtubeaddicts · 01/11/2020 08:39

How can anyone really know where they caught it?

Someone very close to me had it, no idea where from, had been to 3-4 different places.

Do people always tell track and trace the truth? Are they going to admit if they've visited family when they weren't supposed to or been to an illegal party?

Benjispruce2 · 01/11/2020 08:40

DD at university. It was rife a few weeks ago but has dropped right off now. They were in Tier 2. I’m in primary and we’ve had no cases(Tier 1) and DD2 in a large secondary where there have only been 2 cases.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/11/2020 08:42

@Youtubeaddicts when it's as widespread as this you cant really, unless you catch it from a member of your family whilst isolating.

Back in March I had a meeting with a colleague who started showing symptoms a day or two later (he donates antibodies now so we know it was cv). So I think that's where I caught it, the timescale fits, but of course it could have been in the chip shop or at the supermarket.

walksen · 01/11/2020 08:43

"How can anyone really know where they caught it?"

Well according to Mumsnet.

If you work in the NHS the balance of probability Is you caught it at work.

If you work in a school, you caught it down the pub? Or shopping.

I know I cut all social contact with friends and support bubbles when cases exploded at my workplace and only went shopping once a week.

This made track and trace easy and means I am very certain where I caught it.

Jeremyironseverything · 01/11/2020 08:44

I caught it at school then passed it on to two family members.

So according to the stats 66% of us caught it at home - but it all originated at school...

JinglingHellsBells · 01/11/2020 08:44

Surely you only need to spend a few minutes on this forum to see blatant rule-breaking and people protesting they aren't following the rules?

Most of the recent cases are in university towns where students go out and infect the rest of the population.

OR it's high density towns and cities where families live together and refuse to abide by lockdown and social distancing.

I know of two neighbours of my family up north who have carried on mixing households despite the rules and one of them works in the NHS in a children's hospital.

Last night, someone sent me a photo from the street of a club in London where young people were queueing to get in, with no SD outside and certainly not inside.

These are all the ways it spreads.

Bikingbear · 01/11/2020 08:47

@Summerfreeze

Surely if it's spreading in schools and unis, at some point there's likely to be a good level of immunity in these settings? Even if just for this winter? Maybe that's what they're thinking with keeping them open (teachers obviously are collateral damage to that plan).
I think you might have hit the nail on the head. Someone also suggested to me that the government recognise a need to build immunity amongst the population, as we need some plan B incase the vaccine plan A doesn't work.
PaperMonster · 01/11/2020 08:49

I work in a college in a Tier 3 area and it’s rife. People who have been in contact with a positive case are no longer being told to isolate. We have students going into work placements - including care home settings - and so the risk of spreading it is increased. We are doing very little remote learning. I’m surprised I’ve not already caught it.

Livelovebehappy · 01/11/2020 08:49

Spreading in certain cultural communities where multiple families live together, and so the risks are greater. That’s certainly a big problem where I live anyway.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/11/2020 08:51

No- schools are being kept open to a) continue education and b) protect children's mental health and c) so parents can work (at home or going out.)

Young children might catch it but don't get ill.

Teachers should be able to avoid it if they practise the measures.

There is no real evidence that teachers are catching it in school rather than out of school - in shops, on transport, in cafes, with their own friends.

Iwannabeadog · 01/11/2020 08:51

What’s so annoying is that, with some planning, we could have tied this lockdown in with an extended half term. A week off as normal, then online for 1-2 weeks extra. Instead it’s been rushed through by these endlessly incompetent idiots. Probably meaning it’ll be useless and extended....

Ilovemypantry · 01/11/2020 08:51

@Comefromaway

How do they know though.

Dh is a teacher. He travels every day on the train to work to teach classes of students in unventilated rooms. Last weekend we went to a restaurant, the theatre & shopping. If he caught it who knows where he could have picked it up.

The more places you go, the higher your chance of getting infected.
movingonup20 · 01/11/2020 08:51

I went in past the primary school at pick up a week ago, parents crowded outside on the pavements, (kids are brought to the gate) chatting, no social distancing, no masks. You also see several groups of up to 6 sitting in the cafe bar place in town of similar aged people (well women). School isn't just the classroom, it's the journeys it forces.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/11/2020 08:52

@Jeremyironseverything But how do you know you caught it at school? How can you prove that? presumably you travel, use shops, talk to other people outside of work?

Jeremyironseverything · 01/11/2020 08:55

Because several staff members and some children caught it, including the other adult in my classroom. We know who it originated from. It was 100% caught at school. It's all very hush hush though. The parents will have no idea of the extent of the outbreak, although they are aware there were some.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/11/2020 08:56

@PollyPelargonium52 A headteacher can make any rules they like for their school. It's not down to Boris when you have a head who is responsible for the welfare of his staff and pupils.
