WHERE are people catching Covid?

I don't mean where in the country, I mean what settings? I know they lie a lot about it not spreading in schools but is there any data about where they are at least purporting that it's spreading?

It's all very well us saying track and trace is rubbish, and I agree it is, but it can never function as efficiently as those in countries like Taiwan and South Korea as the British are very focussed on personal freedom and rights to privacy. I know many people who will not use the app and we have all heard of people giving false details to hospitality so what can we expect? We are getting just what our society deserves Sad

Donuts000 · 01/11/2020 01:35

@custardbear

One of the SAGE professors said earlier in the Channel 4 news that women of age 18-40 had increased in hospitals ..... so basically parents then of kids getting it from schools

Let's hope we don't fuck up kids more by ensuring their parent ends up on ITU or dead - they'll blame Themselves as it wouldn't have come from them ... worrying - #online teaching!

I agree completely with this, I have health problems and I am really worried that if my DD brings it home from school and I get really ill or her dad gets really ill she will blame herself, how can we expect kids to live with that ????

I know I need to think about her mental health but she is more worried about going to school than about staying home, all of her lessons are set on line anyway even though she is sitting in a classroom completing the work so what the point????

I wish I could keep her at home now, the local cases are going up and up

ktp100 · 01/11/2020 01:39

The increase in cases since September suggests schools, mostly.

Yohoheaveho · 01/11/2020 02:25

@TheFlis12345

A friend got it from her gym. They had to close after about 20 cases were confirmed, even though they have been stringent with distancing, disinfecting etc.
Oh dear that's very disappointing😕 is it in an area of high case numbers?
Bluebellbike · 01/11/2020 06:16

Schools and universities. But they are staying open. Lock down isn't going to work then. Confused

CarlottaValdez · 01/11/2020 06:28

Are there countries where schools haven’t returned? Would be interesting to compare their numbers to ours.

BessieSurtees · 01/11/2020 06:37

Does that pie chart have a hidden agenda? I can’t see how care homes are so high, they are locked down, they are tested every week. Pubs look suspiciously missing? It does not even remotely resemble PHE data.

Bromeliad · 01/11/2020 06:49

There were 35 cases amongst students in a school near me. Started in year 12 then some from lower years were picked up, many in the lower years were probably asymptomatic.

There was a primary school which trialled the fast test and had to close because there were so many cases. Loads of them were asymptomatic. These were all reported in the local news, but no mention in the nationals so people are still convinced it isn't spreading in schools. It really is!

Yes workplaces, schools and universities

Those graphs only include cases which can be traced, and tracing is easier in those settings because you know who you were at work or in class with.

Since only a minority of cases are traced, graphs of where transmission happened will be heavily biased towards settings where it's easy to trace transmission.

There was a study published this week suggesting that the "eat out to help out" scheme resulted in a significant number of infections. It seems likely that pubs are even more of a problem because there is less social distancing and more drinking (the two are of course linked) in pubs than in restaurants.

Tl;dr restaurants and bars are probably a very big part of the problem.

queenofkale · 01/11/2020 06:52

The issue with care homes is that residents are not capable of social distancing or mask wearing (mostly due to dementia) so it just needs to come in with one asymptomatic staff member of visitor -

(staff are only being tested every 14 days in my area - which is awful I think they should be tested weekly.)

Then it can be passed around through the residents quickly and easily. And then they often infect the staff also. Also some hones are exactly that converted large homes which make social distancing more difficult.

Iggly · 01/11/2020 06:53

We need track and trace and faster/testing. Then it would be easier to trace covid.

Other countries managed it. We’ve spent £12bn.

Where the fuck has that money gone.

yearinyearout · 01/11/2020 06:56

The person I know that currently has it caught it at work in a small shop. Manager of the shop was off ill the week before with a fever that apparently only lasted a day so couldn't possibly be covid, so they didn't get a test and went back to work, and infected their colleague (and potentially dozens of unsuspecting customer!) what a fuckwit.

BertieBotts · 01/11/2020 06:56

There's a really good article I've seen which explains how it spread in different environments using a model with coloured "droplets".

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 01/11/2020 06:56

@CarlottaValdez . Victoria incAustralia closed schools after their outbreak , long lockdown and I think are down to 0 cases now.

CarlottaValdez · 01/11/2020 06:58

Thanks Pineapple, that’s pretty compelling isn’t it?

21833efb · 01/11/2020 07:01

Someone at my gym caught it in Blackpool on a group break there, as did someone else in the group.

nottodaytomorrow · 01/11/2020 07:03

@CountreeGurl

Yes workplaces, schools and universities
The only place allowed to remain open in lockdown- you actually couldn't make it up Sad
Solasum · 01/11/2020 07:04

@Iggly even Germany is now saying they are unable to trace the causes of 75% of cases now, and that is In spite of having a significantly better starting point than we did, both with proper leadership and a far more established pharmaceuticals industry. Some people will have got very very rich from all this

Ejb86 · 01/11/2020 07:05

I work in a primary school. I caught it there.

lljkk · 01/11/2020 07:13

I thought 60% of transmission was within private homes.

Iggly · 01/11/2020 07:16

Because they let it get of hand @Solasum I suspect.

Countries such as South Korea, who’ve dealt with this before, did it properly.

From the beginning we didn’t even try.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/11/2020 07:21

Private homes
Schools, universities
Halls of residence
People ignoring the rules and going on pub crawls in big groups.

BlueStethoscope · 01/11/2020 07:22

Another thinly veiled let's shut all school post.

For now schools are open in almost all European countries. Closing schools comes at too high an opportunity cost. Most teachers, police and NHS frontline staff, carers in care homes prison staff and supermarket workers are unable to work from home. The lockdown will protect them too as cases will go down.

WhyNittyBitty · 01/11/2020 07:24

I caught it from work, along with 4 others

Nailgirl · 01/11/2020 07:30

Anyone can tell you that it is schools and university in the main. Lots are asymptotic and only a few that have symptoms are positive in younger group. It’s terrifying me. I honestly don’t know what to do. All 3 children go to wrap around childcare, one goes to two schools, on buses etc it’s a mess
