To think schools should be shut during lockdown.

So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

@Nicknacky don’t ask, apparently teachers can watch key worker kids and teach remotely and I’m dumb for creating a problem that doesn’t exist......

whoareyouIwonder · 31/10/2020 20:36

YANBU

BurningMam · 31/10/2020 20:36

To everyone saying there are no cases in their child's school - it's insane that you think you'd know that! The school tells you things you need to know. The school I teach in doesn't tell every parent when there's a case. You probably won't be told if there's a case unless your child is effected.

Nellle · 31/10/2020 20:36

Very few responses on here relating to whether closing schools would help the lockdown succeed or save lives.

Priorities 🙄

SirVixofVixHall · 31/10/2020 20:36

Teachers should not be expected to work in such an unsafe environment. Even twenty somethings are getting long covid , but many of my dc’s teachers are middle aged. We are expecting teachers to make themselves incredibly vulnerable. What if a teacher dies ?
What about parents? Many parents, myself included are at higher risk of long covid.
Blended learning with proper protections in place for teachers, only using well ventilated rooms with smaller groups is maybe the way forward ?

Yes. That's exactly correct. Just like they did in the last lockdown. If you're actually a key worker you'd know you could send your child in during the last lockdown.

anniegun · 31/10/2020 20:37

No they should not . Glad you asked

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 31/10/2020 20:38

@BurningMam my children go to a small rural school, you couldn’t fart without someone knowing about it what a ridiculous statement to make. Everyone seems to know when someone’s kids are off sick etc.

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:38

FreshfieldsGals Do you have primary aged children and you and children’s dad/partner work out of home?

I’m genuinely curious if those that are shouting for schools to close have those issues.

NoDramaMama14 · 31/10/2020 20:38

No YANBU at all. If schools/unis/nurseries remain open, the lockdown is pointless. Unfortunately, more people will die, just because the government refuse to make up their mind in this bizarre hokey cokey dance they force us to live out.

Katjolo · 31/10/2020 20:38

Yes!

Do you even have kids/work in a school? Confused

I can Guarantee that every one knows if there's a case. These things spread like wildfire. The joy of WhatsApp and Facebook etc.

Heck, I know of cases in schools that nobody I know attends...!

Thedogshow · 31/10/2020 20:39

YABU

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 31/10/2020 20:39

@BurningMam I’ll say again. My children did use the key worker spaces, there was no teaching going on just childcare e.g. a lot of games, going outside etc. How can a teacher watch a load of key worker kids and teach online?

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:39

BurningMan Not in my local authority your couldn’t. Both parents had to be key workers.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/10/2020 20:40

I agree Nellie. Community spread from schools and colleges is clearly an issue. We should be random mass testing schools to get an idea of the numbers of asymptomatic cases.

BurningMam · 31/10/2020 20:40

Of course - the countryside. Where the law doesn't matter and confidentiality doesn't exist?! I'm from the countryside too and you're being ridiculous. You might think you know everything but you really, really don't - and throwing a strop about it doesn't make you know any more.

BlackPetunia · 31/10/2020 20:40

@Grapefruitcauliflower

Schools should only be open if actual measures are in place (proper ventilation, bubbles, PPE), otherwise of course they’ll continue to be major hubs of infection (like ours - little wonder when they’re taking barely any precautions and school isn’t even informing parents of +ve cases). With things as they are, I’d personally be favour of schools being included in the lockdown (even though DH and I both wfh - 4 paid jobs between us so it certainly wouldn’t be easy). I do absolutely understand the arguments for keeping them open, I just wish precautions were stricter and PPE for staff and older kids was mandatory.

However, all university teaching should be online this year. HE is not mandatory so to treat it in the same category as school is illogical.

totally agree!!

all these posters blearing they have no childcare......you are happy to throw your kids teachers under the bus though aren't you!? and their families!!!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 31/10/2020 20:41

I’m not throwing a strop about anything but you can’t possibly know everything about every area either. You’re just being obtuse now claiming that every area must be the same

BurningMam · 31/10/2020 20:42

@BlackPetunia And their own children - children die from Covid too. All this "it doesn't effect kids", it doesn't effect kids AS BADLY. It still makes them ill, still gives them life long conditions and still kills them.

00100001 · 31/10/2020 20:42

@BurningMam. It sure what your lock down experience was, but many many schools. Didn't provide adequate remote learning proviso.
One 7yo I know has only just been given his laptop that was supposed to be given to him, and that was because a local charity funded it... He did no school work last term, because he had no line access, mum only had a mobile phone, and no printer. No way if getting to school to collect work sheets etc etc etc etc etc etc

Not everyone lives in a happy land where they have everything they need...

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:42

BlackPetunia I’m going to be really harsh here but I’m not giving up my career because of my kids teacher and their family. It’s their choice to continue in teaching.

Nameandgamechange123 · 31/10/2020 20:42

Kids need to be in school. Honestly........ The kids are the most important members of our society. They need to socialise so they don't become weirdos. They need an education so they will get jobs and live worthwhile lives. They need to have their imaginations stretched. They need discipline. They need time away from their parents to develop independence. They need to learn to be open minded. I say this as a parent and a teacher.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 31/10/2020 20:42

And confidentiality in a village really? Not in any village I’ve ever lived in. I had a message before the October break about a case in a secondary school my kids don’t even go to, explain that?
