So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools,colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

Teachers are responsible for people’s kids now? People are openly saying this. Crazy!

Their job is to educate children but not when it risks their lives. Too bad. Stop passing the buck to teachers!

No.we really, REALLY have to start putting children's needs on a higher priority. We can find safer ways to live but we must keep schools open.

@GuyFawkesDay

Close secondaries as kids are old enough to work from home: the can have online learning. Vulnerable etc go into school.

Primaries stay in.

I completely agree with this.
Secondary school students can stay home alone so parents can still work and they can work remotely with proper provision. Primary schools have lower transmission rates and are needed more as a childcare provision (although that is obviously not their primary purpose).

I am a secondary school teacher and I want schools to be open for the benefit of children and their wellbeing. However, schools are not safe and they must contribute to the spread of the virus generally. My concern is that with schools open in this 2nd lockdown it has to be less effective than the initial lockdown in the spring, Therefore this 4 weeks is going to extended and extended...........again.

No. I am not happy that in Wales my exam classes will miss out next week

My ds got covid at school and I disagree with this.

Children need to be educated, the “education” they received during last lock was very very poor

I would prefer part time school and think the current set up is not good, due to the large class sizes in England and overcrowded schools.

At very least there should be no fines during lockdown.

The UK is not handling this at all well.
@BurningMam she's talking about if they went to staggered timetables etc and kids only being in 2 days a week.
But that wouldn't apply to key workers' children - it never has. The children of key workers have always been able to go in to school full time so she's being dumb and complaining about a problem that doesn't exist.

No one said that.

People are asking. Who is going to look after the kids for 4 weeks this time?

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I just want rid of the virus so we can get back to some normality asap

But closing schools won't get rid of the virus. it will just slow it down for a while again.
It's here until we have a vaccine for it.

YANBU. Lockdown is pointless if they remain open. Might as well not have one.

Completely this. If schools stay open and people keep going to work then this lockdown is barely any different to everyday life. The r will undoubtedly stay above 1.

Schools should only be open if actual measures are in place (proper ventilation, bubbles, PPE), otherwise of course they’ll continue to be major hubs of infection (like ours - little wonder when they’re taking barely any precautions and school isn’t even informing parents of +ve cases). With things as they are, I’d personally be favour of schools being included in the lockdown (even though DH and I both wfh - 4 paid jobs between us so it certainly wouldn’t be easy). I do absolutely understand the arguments for keeping them open, I just wish precautions were stricter and PPE for staff and older kids was mandatory.

However, all university teaching should be online this year. HE is not mandatory so to treat it in the same category as school is illogical.

YABU.

No cases in my kid's independent school - staff or kids. They are there for far longer hours than state too, and have boarders.

They need their education, and parents need to work. My workplace never shut fully, and I was only furloughed for 4 weeks. IME , many of the "Lets shut EVERYTHING again!" brigade enjoyed their government-financed sabbatical a bit too much. We have several like that at work.....Hmm, and needless to say they all have partners in well-paid secure WFH jobs!

I agree about universities - the government and universities are just in cahoots to scam students and essentially mug them for fees whilst risking their health.

@BurningMam yes my children did her the key worker places but how were teachers going to teach online and look after key worker children? The letter said that provision might be made for key worker children but they didn’t know where or by who, it could have been anywhere and there was no guarantees but thanks for calling me dumb, lovely aren’t you. Remember it would have been mainly women affected and most nurses are women...:

Oh and all the people saying teachers can wfh/teach online.... it didnt work last time, because actually loads of teachers have their own kids. And they cannot do their job, fully & properly, with their own young children at home.

Imagine a yr 6 teacher trying to teach 30 kids maths over zoom but he's got his own 2 & 6 year olds with him. The 2 year old wets herself and needs cleaning up. The 6 is trying to a phonics work sheet but isnt old enough to do that without an adult guiding/supervising..etc etc.it doesn't work.

Schools should close imo.
Apparently it would reduce the R rate by between 0.2 and 0.5.

I would feel much safer if DS was at home.
