To think schools should be shut during lockdown.

So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

OP posts:

If you want the lockdown to be effective they should close. Just look at the way the graphs showed increases from the time of ‘Eat Out to Help Out and the return of schools. Having said that I can absolutely understand that parents of young children who work are at the end of their tether and I sympathise. If they’re to stay open there needs to be better care taken of the teachers. That could start with correct PPE being available.

GirlCrush · 31/10/2020 20:13

there might be two of them....the kid is their responsibility after all

teachers could potentially lose their life. no ppe, just bit of hand sanitiser??

Purpledaisychain · 31/10/2020 20:13

If you worked in pastoral care, and saw first hand how much kids had suffered with their mental health as a result of the first lockdown, you might think differently, OP.

Another thread where people give birth, only to mistake teachers for childcare 🙄

Ylvamoon · 31/10/2020 20:14

Well Boris has spoken, schools are open... for now.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/10/2020 20:15

YABU, for primary schools at least.

Secondary schools could possibly move to blended learning for students who don't have critical exams coming up. Primaries need to stay open, for both educational as well as childcare reasons, sad but true.

GirlCrush · 31/10/2020 20:15

@00100001 the parents?

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:15

GirlCrush My kids have both parents who live with them but we both work out of home.

ShandlersWig · 31/10/2020 20:15

None of our teachers have caught covid, only children, and each time that year group self isolated and controlled the infection spread.
I'd be interested in seeing the data on how many adults in school settings have caught covid and wether it's as much as the Union's expectations. Not being goady. Genuinely curious.

alphabetsoup1980 · 31/10/2020 20:15

@Ilovegreentomatoes

Obviously not a popular opinion then!
Haha!!! 90% of the people on here are teacher bashers. I agree with you! I'm a teacher and have organised all my remote teaching in case of lock down! I've also got two young children of my own so I'm not exactly going to get a rest with full time remote teaching and also looking after them!

I think the majority here just have a chip on their shoulder because if our holidays!

hedgehogger1 · 31/10/2020 20:16

Nah and when the teachers are hospitalised the government should be making sure the infrastructure is there so they can still teach from their beds. Education is too important!

Croleeen · 31/10/2020 20:16

No.

Considering that that's how our entire economy is set up, it's hardly a shock.

Someone has to bloody work right? Otherwise how are teachers to be paid?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/10/2020 20:16

@Coldandwet123 you might not like it but parents work when their children are at school, that's a fact, and younger children can't be left alone. What's your solution to that apart from reminding us that school isn't childcare?

megletthesecond · 31/10/2020 20:16

Year 11 should stay in most of the time. Somehow. I will say that.

But if mine are at home then I won't get ill. One won't learn a thing. The other will muddle through.

Mokusspokus · 31/10/2020 20:16

Students also have parents who are vulnerable, it's not easy for them to to be in the among, some diligent students who mask up, wash-hands etc. But also among those who don't care about covid and don't want to follow any rules, complain of the cold when windows open etc.

Teachers, all staff. Even some teachers are not concerned about covid, they want the windows shut as well!
There is no consistency, or basic bar. In Germany, having the windows regularly opened is a strict regime, dc are told to take blankets in.
It's part of every day, its sparodic here..
It's all sloppy, no definitive guidance! Each person is can broadly interpret things how they like.

formerbabe · 31/10/2020 20:16

I honestly cannot cope with my dc having to do home learning again....the nagging, the pleading with them to do it. It was hellish. My ds informs me that many children in his class didn't do one single piece of work despite being set a full timetable.

Milicentbystander72 · 31/10/2020 20:17

No. My Dd is Y11 a has missed enough as it is. The teachers have been doing sterling work catching up but this would kill it.

I could possibly get on board with one week in, one week virtual learning if it was for a very limited time.

00100001 · 31/10/2020 20:17

@GarlicSoup

Completely agree - schools should be closed with immediate effect.
Who's going to look after your kids whilst you are working?
1Morewineplease · 31/10/2020 20:17

I'd like it for school staff to be able to wear face coverings. If you have 30+ children facing you and breathing towards you then surely you should be able to protect yourself ? ( says a 50+ TA with an insulin dependant and heart problemed husband who wants to keep him alive!)

TableFlowerss · 31/10/2020 20:17

Schools should stay optnb

TableFlowerss · 31/10/2020 20:18

Or open even ha

kingpingu · 31/10/2020 20:18

I work in childcare so no I won't have the luxury of being kept safe working from home

And suddenly it all becomes clear. You don't want to do your job. Just save everyone time and say that from the start.

Mokusspokus · 31/10/2020 20:18

Fines should be removed immediately.
So worried dp can pull dc out.

Wow you've drunk the kool aid if you are now implying parents are entitled and unreasonable for expecting their children to be able to attend school.
