So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

@MigGril I did try. But he thought that meant he could go up even more noses. There is just no reasoning with this virus. I think SLT need to take over 😂

Sonnenscheins · 01/11/2020 10:03

Shut the schools so we can deal with this quicker. If people can work from home then children can learn from home.

Many parents cannot work from home. I can't.

Many children and teens do not have access to online learning resources or space to work at home.

Years 11 and 13 have exams next summer and they've already missed school earlier in the year.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/11/2020 10:04

I don’t even know where to begin with rubbish like this

Do tell?

Didn't they do it first time round? Or is too hard on the teachers?

I manage to work from home using different online platforms, I really don't see why schools cannot do it, if there is the will to do so.

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 10:04

@Sonnenscheins see my earlier proposal. Not shut, part time. No remote learning required. So simple, so safe.

MigGril · 01/11/2020 10:05

@mumsneedwine but are those 300 students in one bubble? You can have bubbles of upto 700 and some smaller high schools have just decided to operate as normal. This is what a lot of the small village primary schools round hear have done to. Less disruption to teaching only disadvantage is you risk the whole school having to self isolate if you get more then a few cases.

Part time. How are they doing to fit in everything they would do full time if they're in 2 days a week?

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 10:07

Trust: How do you get that from "I wear a mask because I have to"

Selective memory there Trust.
You said I do because I have to. I wouldn't if I didn't have to. I don't give a shit whether anyone else does.

TheKeatingFive · 01/11/2020 10:08

Didn't they do it first time round?

No. Huge numbers of children were failed first time round. For a wide variety of reasons.

monkeytennis97 · 01/11/2020 10:09

@TrustTheGeneGenie I suspect you are being deliberately obtuse but here we go again, if Heads tell their staff they cannot wear PPE in class the staff won't because they are fearful of being disciplined etc The guidance needs to change to take out the ridiculous stuff about not wearing PPE in classrooms.

EmpressoftheMundane · 01/11/2020 10:09

Schools should stay open.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 10:09

have you tried giving positive behavior points, maybe that's the key. wink

Haha!!

I thought this thread is advocating closing schools.

But regarding your suggestion of part time school,

  1. where do children go in their week off school?

  2. how can the gcse of a level syllabuses be taught in half the time?!

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 10:09

@MigGril 300 in each bubble. Lots of whom have siblings in other bubbles/schools. And half of whom get on buses with all the other bubbles. Bubbles are a farce.

Yes that's the same thing. I wear one because I have to. I wouldn't if I didn't have to. Same for most people. Did you wear one before they were made mandatory?
seven201 · 01/11/2020 10:11

I'm a secondary teacher. I'd feel less anxious if the kids wore masks in lessons. Year 7, 8 and most of 9 wear masks in the corridors but above that most don't.

I think blended learning and staying open to vulnerable kids is what should be done for secondary.

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 10:12

@Sonnenscheins @TrustTheGeneGenie part time not one week on/off. Exam years in full time as normal. Years 10 & 12 in 3 days each week, with interim work set in the 2 days not in.
Years 7,8,9 in either 2 or 3 days each week. Again f2F teaching and work set for home days. No need to remote teach as work will be discussed and marked next day when they are back in.
Easy to get through the curriculum like this. We are so far ahead with our exam years as have not been doing practicals. Due to finish teaching in Feb so loads of revision time.

Totally agree
LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 10:13

Did you wear one before they were made mandatory?

Yes. In public.
Not in school though. Not allowed.
(and yes, I was in school during lockdown. With groups of up to 30 key worker children and later KS4 bubbles.)

So in your opinion they only need 2 or 3 days in school and that's just as good as a ft education?

Perfect28 · 01/11/2020 10:14

I absolutely despair at some of the opinions on here. Not only the simple fact that the government are asking you to sacrifice huge portions of your own lives whilst keeping schools open, which, by their own data is where cases are spreading...but there is also so much vitriol for teachers (predictably) for simply wanting a safe place to work. Strikes are being discussed purely because there is nothing being done to keep us safe. The government actively lie, telling the public that class sizes are smaller and measures have been put in place. Let me tell you, once and for all, that this is BS. Unless you count putting one bottle of hand San in each classroom and asking teenagers to use it. Everyone wants schools open, everyone, we just want them open safely?! Is that really so hard to understand? At the very least vulnerable staff members should be supported to stay at home, and masks should be mandated. Appaling. Shame on everyone who just thinks we should get on with it, absolute shame.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 10:15

Yes that's the same thing.

In your world maybe

Hmm. Well you were in a tiny minority - most people only wear masks because they now have to. And will stop as soon as they no longer have to.
