So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

No. Huge numbers of children were failed first time round. For a wide variety of reasons.

Why were they failed? Because the schools/teachers could deliver online lessons? Why don't we look into that instead of deciding it can't be done?

No, but give teachers more protection. Give them priority testing, ppe and treat them the same as nhs staff. Should a vaccine be ready allow them to jump the queue.

Yes that's the same thing.

In your world maybe

In everyone's world. I wear a mask because I have to and I do because I have to mean exactly the same thing. How do they not?? Please, explain.

Hmm. Well you were in a tiny minority - most people only wear masks because they now have to. And will stop as soon as they no longer have to.

Speak for yourself.

@Perfect28 😘thank you. For some reason teacher bashing has become a national pastime for some. I find it strange they allow us to look after their children !

I am speaking for myself. But I would bet my last £1 that as soon as Boris says masks are no longer mandatory the vast majority will stop wearing them.

You said I do because I have to. I wouldn't if I didn't have to. I don't give a shit whether anyone else does.

This study by the bmj actually suggests closing schools and unis leads to more deaths:

This thread is just impossible.

There are way too many variables to reach a decision everyone is happy with.

They need to try and think about ways to make schools safer first and foremost

@mumsneedwine yes I know they are prove recently locally by the fact one local primary end up shutting 3 year group bubbles. This then followed a case at the local high school, again this was spread by in household we've been told (so no doubt a brother or sister at the primary). The problem is if the kids are still going to school, this isn't going to stop. I don't think closing them completely is the answer but I do like the idea of less time in school so we can reduce numbers and increase social distancing.

And to the poster who was wondering how you tacher the whole content. I'm not a teacher, but one of our science teachers did have a moan at me the other day saying if his year 11's had actually done all the work he'd set them over lockdown they would have finished the circulum cone back ready to practice all the practicals and do revision. But it was quite clear a lot of them hadn't bothered to do much work. So at lest with them in part time you could set work and be checking they where keeping up with it. And answering any questions they may have while they are in. I'm sure key work children could stay in, we had them in the whole time last time.

@Sonnenscheins that study by one scientist at Imperial doesn't really say anything. The headline is not backed up with any data, just a hunch. We now have data that the current biggest transmission is in years 7-11. So why not act on this data ?
@NiceTwin how the hell do you teach the option blocks without students mixing ? Would genuinely like to know. We have 300 kids who do 10 subjects each from a list of 32. So lots of mixing as they do different things ???
They are in bubbled in year groups and are all in different areas of the school. When they move for options, they only move within their bubble area.

For specialist subjects - music, dt, pe, art and drama - the same year group is being taught at the same time. So if anybody is on the move, they are all in the same bubble.
Lunch is 2 bubbles. One upstairs, the other downstairs and separate playgrounds.

It has definitely taken a lot of planning but it seems to be working 🙏

I wonder what you think I should do? Pregnant trainee teacher paying £9000 to train and being told that I have to circulate the room as that's part of being a teacher. Working in rooms where the windows can't open, with students from Yr 7 to 6th form. If I stop my course all my (measly) funding stops. I can't pay my mortgage or feed myself. If I continue I potentially put my babies life at risk. Wwyd?

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 10:31

@NiceTwin we don't have the space for that unfortunately. 2,000 kids take up a lot of room !

Mumneedswine Not a teacher and last DC left in March this year so no bias in my agenda..

I cannot understand how Teachers are putting up with this. Why are you not contacting the HSE about your working conditions? Why is your health more expendable than say a publicans or hairdressers ? Why aren't your unions protecting their members ?

I am assuming that this is part of the plan because keeping secondary schools and Universities open defies all logic . Instead of Boris being the bad guy - he gets the unions to call it - (playing in to Tory union bashing agenda ) .- OR the virus will decide it for them by infecting so many staff they won't be able to open ..

"I wear a mask because I have to"
Fact.
It is the law. It applies to everyone. In public inside spaces (other than schools).

I do because I have to. I wouldn't if I didn't have to. I don't give a shit whether anyone else does.
Opinion about the fact. Not everyone shares your opinion. It doesn’t apply to everyone. Certainly not me.
