Can I go on holiday to the Canaries if there’s a lockdown?

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 09:34

DH and I along with my DM booked to go to Tenerife when the canaries were removed from the quarantine list. Our trip isn’t for a fortnight and now waking up to the news another National lockdown is likely??! We booked in the knowledge that even in Tier 3 we could have travelled abroad but now don’t know what will be permitted??!!

I don’t need a load of judgement about booking a hol either - DM is fully isolated and has been for months but is fit and well and we are both WFH and had planned online shop etc and basically 2 weeks self imposed quarantine prior to trip (so starting today).

Arghhhh - can anyone help?

@HundredMilesAnHour no - I pointed out up thread I was in TIER 1 - my reference to Tier 3 was that I checked what the restrictions were on travel under Tier 3 as an absolute contingency in case things deteriorated. This time last week Bojo was still saying no chance of a national lockdown. Sigh.

@Nicknacky

So all the posters that are screaming about how irresponsible the OP is being, when in your opinion can people travel abroad?
How about when there’s a vaccine for this global pandemic disease?
Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:05

CovidAnni There might never be a vaccine so no travel abroad ever again?

Or it might be years away.

Versace104 · 31/10/2020 20:09

Don't worry OP, i'm a moron too according to this thread ! There must be a few of us.
They have to resort to insults like that which is quite sad.

AnyFucker · 31/10/2020 20:12
Wink
Versace104 · 31/10/2020 20:12

Haha, let's make our own moron thread !

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:13

I wanted to be a moron but my holiday to Turkey was cancelled. So I was a moron who flew to the south of England instead.

So a kinda national moron?

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 20:18

Morons of Mumsnet unite!!

Hoppinggreen · 31/10/2020 21:21

CovidAnni · 31/10/2020 21:29

The moron comment was to the poster who claims she’s not had covid and not passed it on to anyone else.
No one can say that

Oh, only when such posters decide they want to go on holiday
Aridane · 01/11/2020 01:02

< Another moron here >

@Hoppinggreen - where did you go to in Greece?

Winterwoo · 01/11/2020 07:20

According to the gov.uk website the travel ban doesn’t cover countries on the travel corridor list so I think you should be able to go still. Although I guess things could change still

Figgygal · 01/11/2020 07:26

Sky news reporting this this morning

People in England are being told to avoid all non-essential travel in the UK and abroad as part of a new month-long lockdown.

This means from 5 November to 2 December, foreign holidays and overnight stays anywhere in the UK are banned.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/11/2020 07:31

www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november

This is what it says;
“Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed- including holidays in the UK and abroad This includes staying in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with”

Delatron · 01/11/2020 08:46

Everyone makes their own risk assessment as to whether they could and wanted to travel abroad this summer/autumn. It wasn’t moronic if they followed the law and quarantined if necessary. Those who say ‘nobody needs a holiday every year’. It wasn’t against guidelines then. So many things aren’t allowed I sure as hell don’t think we should add more restrictions on ourselves!

We flew to Menorca in July. Private villa and self catered most of the time. There were precisely 16 cases in the Island then. Brilliant time to go and I feel very relieved we managed to sneak away. We definitely did not bring it back with us. Or take it there!

Fair play to everyone who has followed to rules but managed to still get a break in and I feel very sorry for those who have had holidays cancelled.

If you’re waiting for a vaccine to have a holiday you could be waiting a very long time..

The Rule Of Boris Johnson.

The more Johnson says he won't do something the closer he is to uturning on it*. Wink

You are best to follow the mood of things rather than what Johnson says.

*Brexit related exceptions to this rule may apply

Personally given how utterly burnt out a lot of people are and how poorly the government have handled things, I can't fully begrudge anyone wanting to go away. I do begrudge if they fail to quarantine / test as per rules that apply though as that's the really irresponsible bit. Ultimately its Brits who pose the bigger risk atm anyway.

luckylavender · 01/11/2020 09:12

@Nicknacky - in Australia they have said late 2021

Ponoka7 · 01/11/2020 09:24

"So all the posters that are screaming about how irresponsible the OP is being, when in your opinion can people travel abroad?"

When we open stuff for primary aged school children. I'm clinically vulnerable, in my 50's. My sister and her/my friends are in their 60's. They booked Turkey when they could and now the Canaries. Life hasn't changed for them and some have been in hospital because of Covid as a result. For weeks I've seen the pubs/cafes/restaurants full of over 60's, while primary aged children are having restrictions to their lives. It doesn't make sense. My friend's 86 year old Mother has just died as result of a fall in stupid, avoidable circumstances. They want to sue the hospital because they couldn't visit and are accusing them (wrongly imo) of neglect. She caught Covid in hospital.

When are the age groups filling up the hospitals going to play their part?

Hoppinggreen · 01/11/2020 09:44

Aridane we went to Corfu

Alondra · 01/11/2020 09:52

When herd community is attained which will be a couple of years. This is a virus. A virus like HIV, Smallpox, Cholera, Diphtheria, Hepatitis, Measles, Mums, Polio, Rabies, Rubella....

It's a new virus. Wait. Give it a couple of years.

NekoShiro · 01/11/2020 09:53

You can only go abroad for work, maybe you can get a refund?

Youngatheart00 · 01/11/2020 10:14

We’ve pressed the cancel button on the holiday as others have pointed out, from Thursday is not allowed. Applied for refunds from the Villa owner. Flight is with BA so hoping they do actually cancel it as don’t want to be stuck with vouchers I’ve heard it’s nigh on impossible to use.
