Can I go on holiday to the Canaries if there’s a lockdown?

DH and I along with my DM booked to go to Tenerife when the canaries were removed from the quarantine list. Our trip isn’t for a fortnight and now waking up to the news another National lockdown is likely??! We booked in the knowledge that even in Tier 3 we could have travelled abroad but now don’t know what will be permitted??!!

I don’t need a load of judgement about booking a hol either - DM is fully isolated and has been for months but is fit and well and we are both WFH and had planned online shop etc and basically 2 weeks self imposed quarantine prior to trip (so starting today).

Arghhhh - can anyone help?

Canaries and rest of world are crazy to accept Brits! Looking at our stats compared to rest of the world.... madness!

And why are we wasting tests on this kind of thing? We still struggle to get tests locally meaning unpaid time off work

Yet they are handing out tests for non essential reasons?

Cross posting - and thanks for the link

We don’t know so you will have to wait and see as no lockdown is announced yet. Germany’s lighter lockdown banned “tourism” but I don’t know what that means in practice. Remember in these situations it’s also a question of whether Spain also takes action (they had more cases than we did yesterday) so it will only be closer to the time you will know if you can go.

GreekOddess · 31/10/2020 11:44

If the rules allow you then go if you want to.

I personally feel that allowing the economy to grind to a halt is irresponsible...

Tuesday

Monty27 · 31/10/2020 11:46

OP I can only admire your optimism

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 11:52

Few things

We’d be self isolating beforehand as much as possible thus mitigating the risk of a positive covid test (which we would get as part of the new rules).

The accommodation is a private self contained villa with no shared facilities.

Nobody knows until the government reveals the details and timing if any potential lockdown.

But honestly, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to travel.

CovidAnni · 31/10/2020 11:52

@Youngatheart00

I’m not in tier 3 currently. I’m in tier 1!!!!! I checked the restrictions as a contingency in case (in the 2.5 weeks between booking and going) we moved up the tiers.
You’ll be in tier 3 by the time you go. If you do please work out how you can minimise passing it on, in your return. Book a food delivery, fill up with petrol in the way to the airport not in the way back etc.
pollylocketpickedapocket · 31/10/2020 11:54

Girlcrush don’t be ridiculous, tourist places are absolutely desperate shh of cash, they’ll welcome anyone! I was in Crete in august, the people couldn’t have been more welcoming. Op hope you get your holiday and have a bloody good time.

BawJaws · 31/10/2020 11:58

Op the canaries are facing a migrant crisis as well as a huge surge in coronavirus cases.

My bet would be a NO.

Lavenderseas · 31/10/2020 11:59

Getting a covid test within 72 hours of arrival will be the difficult part.

But in addition I don't think it's the best idea to go on holiday during restrictions isn't ideal.

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 12:00

This is the reason for posting, I want to travel but I absolutely don’t want to be irresponsible. I’ve followed the rules to a T for 7.5 months, I’m not a rule bender or a risk taker.

Holiday would be spent in a self contained self catered villa, we’d only be going out for groceries. But agree the flight creates risk but we live a fairly solitary life anyway so wouldn’t be an issue isolating on return.

I am just concerned as to whether it will actually be illegal to go and what the situation will be with flight and accommodation etc. Both are technically refundable but it’s a believe it when I see it situation based on what I’ve heard over the summer with others seeking refunds.

tourist places are absolutely desperate shh of cash.

This is it. Places like the Canaries are dependent on tourism, aren't they?
So it's quite the dilemma--accept tourists who may bring covid or let the economy tank. Not easy decisions.

bigbluebus · 31/10/2020 12:03

I love how everyone who flies abroad justifies it with how safe it is over there or that they've got self contained accommodation. None of that gets away from the fact you will bd mixinv in airports with people from all over the world and sitting in a confined space in a plane for 4 hours.
I wouldn't get your hopes up about going OP!

AnyFucker · 31/10/2020 12:05

.

Eaumyword · 31/10/2020 12:11

I can't believe border control as a method of infection control hasn't featured more prominently this year.
I'm about to have to go back to work in a school where I know some of the families have taken a "much needed" foreign break over half term Hmm
If you're happy to take the risk and cause risk to others, as pp have pointed out, please stick to the quarantine rules and hopefully you'll pay for a private test on your return. Make sure you've got full insurance cover in case you get stuck out there.

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 12:11

Hopes aren’t up, hence post Sad

There's a lot of jealousy I think, I was told it was "absolutely ridiculous" to be flying abroad when I went away in the summer. We took all necessary safety measures and none of us caught the virus (or other viruses that exist) on either holiday.
You can catch it in the supermarket, at work, anywhere. If you can go, i'd go.

Versace104 · 31/10/2020 12:16

Air is regularly filtered on planes, as for 'mixing in airports' we mixed with nobody, everything is socially distanced like it is your local Sainsbury's.

mummyh2016 · 31/10/2020 12:21

Wow the claws are out on MN today aren't they. Not the first thread I've seen like this today. No advice OP other than to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Ignore the high and mighty posts on here!

Eaumyword · 31/10/2020 12:22

I'm personally not jealous! I've never been so relieved in my life when our cruise was cancelled in March (we'd booked last October.)
No, I realise it's personal choice and everyone's concept of risk to themselves and to others, is different. I just personally don't think it's right to holiday abroad with this virus as virulent as it is.
Not sure the OP is asking/bothered if it's morally acceptable, more whether the Canaries will accept them.
I think the answer to that is blowing in the wind and is as changeable. Yes to today, possibly not in a week or two.
A definite yes to full insurance cover, a full freezer, full tank of fuel and private covid tests arranged.

funniestpersonyouknow · 31/10/2020 12:24

@LadyPenelope68

You are still allowed to go, but it’s bloody ridiculous that you can. Anyone doing so is incredible irresponsible IMO.
This
BawJaws · 31/10/2020 12:25

Well yeah, I Probably am jealous because I’ve cancelled 3 holidays this year in an attempt NOT to be a selfish twat.

Everybody needs a fucking holiday by now!
