Can I go on holiday to the Canaries if there’s a lockdown?

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 09:34

DH and I along with my DM booked to go to Tenerife when the canaries were removed from the quarantine list. Our trip isn’t for a fortnight and now waking up to the news another National lockdown is likely??! We booked in the knowledge that even in Tier 3 we could have travelled abroad but now don’t know what will be permitted??!!

I don’t need a load of judgement about booking a hol either - DM is fully isolated and has been for months but is fit and well and we are both WFH and had planned online shop etc and basically 2 weeks self imposed quarantine prior to trip (so starting today).

Arghhhh - can anyone help?

Given that the majority of UK cases now are related to a strain brought back by holiday makers, I think it's bloody stupid to be going abroad for a holiday at the moment.

I wish the government would just stop holidays abroad now. That's twice that the UK has been seeded by people returning from Europe, notably Spain both times.

Stellaris22 · 31/10/2020 12:56

You want to go abroad but not be irresponsible? I don't see how that's possible.

Non essential international travel needs to be banned, no one needs a holiday that badly.

Don’t forget the February half term ski trips to Italy too
Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 13:08

To confirm. I’ve not travelled anywhere since February. Coming to terms with the fact that we now most likely won’t go. I haven’t travelled against the restrictions and neither would I.

Gutted, most so for my DM.

You might not have travelled anywhere yet, plenty people haven’t, but you are planning to and don’t see anything wrong in it. That’s irresponsible.

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 13:38

Should have known better than to come to MN and be preached to be the holier than thou squad. I haven’t done a single thing that’s irresponsible.

I think everyone coming into Uk from abroad should quarantine for 2 weeks, regardless. The R number increased mid August to over 1. Before schools went back. People rushing back from holiday to avoid quarantine. The virus didn't just magically appear in schools it was people's actions over the summer that brought it into schools in the first place. If your comfortable, go, you know the risks. But I would quarantine on return.

Delatron · 31/10/2020 14:12

Ignore them OP, you haven’t done anything wrong.

It wasn’t illegal to travel abroad over the summer, in fact in July it was encouraged to help the tourism industry!

It’s not irresponsible. There’s more cases here. You’re more likely to catch it going on a bus/tube/ train or going to a restaurant.

Sorry about your holiday and I completely understand why you wanted to go away.

Yes, it was encouraged over the summer and now it is estimated that ~80% of cases in the UK are a strain which originated in Spain (see my previous post).

It is absolutely irresponsible to travel internationally at the moment for a holiday.

It's disappointing on a personal level of course - I've had two holidays cancelled this year - but at the end of the day foreign holidays are big luxuries that we can manage without.

grumplass · 31/10/2020 14:43

Holidays this year are so disappointing- you can't escape and forget what's happening, it's always there.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2020 14:50

Question: Have you considered what happens if you go and THEN flights are stopped?

Cos thats a realistic possibility.

ConfusedDotty · 31/10/2020 14:54

Just do what you want, the rest of us will.just abide by the rules so you and your DM can 'get away'

This is why we are in this position right now. I have property abroad which needs maintaining, I normally go three times a year but not this year and I do not consider it essential even though it's now suffered damage due to an earthquake.

People really need to get their priorities in order.

DreamerB28 · 31/10/2020 14:55

Me and My DP have been looking at booking today! We went to Greece last month and felt a lot bloody safer than this place. Live your life and don’t live to regret not going because you’re trying to do the ‘right thing’. Which is what!?
Live your life, your decisions :) I know where I would rather be!

DreamerB28 · 31/10/2020 14:57

Just to add that I also recommend the Trailfinders Covid 19 Insurance if you do go!

Bailey0703 · 31/10/2020 15:04

The whole 'there is no law that says I can't' so I can is, just so illogical .

I could buy a boat and (legally) sail around the world with absolutely no knowledge to do so... doesn't mean I should because I would be a danger to myself and others.

Surely people can read the news. Can work it out for themselves. ? and see that this thing spreads when human beings move about. As simple as that.
Travelling for leisure puts you into that category of already knowing that to do so would increase the risk to yourself and others.

Everyone can find a reason as to why the sensible 'don't move around more than necessary' precautions shouldn't apply to them. Restricting our daily lives for such a long time is hard, really really hard for some. However there is no other way because we are in a one way street to EVERY sick person running the risk of not being able to access health care for whatever reason - not just Covid.

There

Versace104 · 31/10/2020 15:18

Oh stop moaning at her and taking the moral highground, I presume none of you have left the house since March or seen anyone ? There's a risk in everything we do.

luckylavender · 31/10/2020 15:27

I have no words to describe how ridiculous and selfish this is. But whatever, if you're allowed, you're allowed.

Versace104 · 31/10/2020 15:28

By that logic, it's also 'ridiculous and selfish' to go to a pub, restaurant, shop, anywhere really.

Happyheartlovelife · 31/10/2020 15:34

I haven't travelled abroad since three years ago.

Don't forget having lots of money spare in case you get COVID abroad

Or if they shut the countries off. So you might not be able to fly back. Etc.

anon444877 · 31/10/2020 15:36

Good luck @Youngatheart00 I don't know whether it'll be illegal or not but we're all taking risks, all the time and plenty of people have been away this summer, this half term etc

Letseatgrandma · 31/10/2020 15:46

Peston’s leak of the restrictions on Twitter is that Outbound international travel except for work will be banned.

starfish4 · 31/10/2020 15:49

It's irrelevant how careful you've been, it's either allowed or not. We'll probably know more in s couple of hours.

However, you can't move easily between Scotland and England now, so how's it going to be fair if people can holiday abroad. DD said she'd pay for a Covid test today and travel back home to isolate in two rooms at our house, but technically she can't do that even though she's being careful.

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 15:55

Just wondering then, if outbound travel gets banned will they (BA) likely cancel the flights?

Yes. I imagine so.
