Can I go on holiday to the Canaries if there’s a lockdown?

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 09:34

DH and I along with my DM booked to go to Tenerife when the canaries were removed from the quarantine list. Our trip isn’t for a fortnight and now waking up to the news another National lockdown is likely??! We booked in the knowledge that even in Tier 3 we could have travelled abroad but now don’t know what will be permitted??!!

I don’t need a load of judgement about booking a hol either - DM is fully isolated and has been for months but is fit and well and we are both WFH and had planned online shop etc and basically 2 weeks self imposed quarantine prior to trip (so starting today).

Arghhhh - can anyone help?

Surely it’s not about what we CAN do, but what we SHOULD do. People aren’t using their common sense.

luckylavender · 31/10/2020 17:16

We'd all like some sunshine. I'd prioritise seeing my family, but I've had to whistle for that for most of this year too.

Aridane · 31/10/2020 17:18

@Youngatheart00 - did you book a package deal or flights and accommodation oration separately?

Bollss · 31/10/2020 17:20

It is estimated that 80% of current UK cases are a Spanish strain brought back by travellers

Mm. But if it wasn't that strain it would be mainly another surely?

It wouldn't have reduced by 80% just because nobody went to Spain would it?

luckylavender · 31/10/2020 17:22

@TrustTheGeneGenie - we'll never know will we?

It is a very strong indicator that had international travel been restricted, our rates would be much lower than they are presently.

If the virus isn't brought into the population, it can't circulate.

BabyLlamaZen · 31/10/2020 17:24

😂
Ok...

Bollss · 31/10/2020 17:27

If the virus isn't brought into the population, it can't circulate

But we already had it before Spain's travel corridor?

Lockheart · 31/10/2020 17:30

Not the strain that currently accounts for ~80% of cases we didn't.
Bollss · 31/10/2020 17:35

Not the strain that currently accounts for ~80% of cases we didn't

No we'd just have a different strain that was already circulating instead

Lockheart · 31/10/2020 17:35

How do you know?
Bollss · 31/10/2020 17:37

Because why would the strain we already have stop??

EmmaStone · 31/10/2020 17:38

Oh dear. Peston says in the briefing they've been given that outbound international travel will be banned. Sorry OP :(

Lockheart · 31/10/2020 17:39

@TrustTheGeneGenie

It wouldn't - I would have thought that was obvious.

But every additional strain brought into the population will cause a rise in cases.

Therefore it would be wise to try to limit that. I would have thought that was also obvious.

Bollss · 31/10/2020 17:55

It's not obvious at all is it. One strain might just replace another it doesn't necessarily mean if nobody had gone to Spain we'd be 80% better off.

Brighterthansunflowers · 31/10/2020 18:24

I bloody hope holidays are banned! It’s absolutely ridiculous to allow people to travel all over the place potentially spreading coronavirus as they go, while businesses are forced to close and people can’t see their loved ones in an attempt to stop it spreading

Anyone considering a holiday at the moment is absolutely selfish and should be ashamed of themselves

Youngatheart00 · 31/10/2020 18:27

Right - so I’m selfish, shameful, idiotic and moronic - for following the rules exactly and booking only according to guidance.

What’s happened with MN to make it so spiteful and toxic? Take a look in the mirror and question whether you’d be so acerbic face to face.

Thanks to the posters who have been reasonable and especially to those that have PM’d! Accepted the holiday won’t be going ahead, a real shame but not the end of the world and we move on.

Enjoy your evenings.

And what about the travel businesses that are forced to close?

Versace104 · 31/10/2020 18:31

I've been abroad twice this year as I mentioned, I remained cautious, didn't catch the virus or give it to anybody else. I'm not selfish or ashamed of myself one little bit, I had 2 fantastic holidays and i'm very glad I went.

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 18:41

So all the posters that are screaming about how irresponsible the OP is being, when in your opinion can people travel abroad?

amicissimma · 31/10/2020 18:46

Travel is a business and a large contributor to the economy of many countries, including the UK.
Srictlybakeoff · 31/10/2020 18:48

You are not an idiot or a moron - but we have all missed having some sunshine this year ( and I know - I live in Scotland) But 1 year without a holiday is surely manageable. When the dc were younger I couldn’t afford to go abroad every year.
International travel has definitely contributed to this “ second wave”. To call posters who think travelling this year is a bad idea “ holier than thou” is unfair. I read the evidence and decided it was the wrong thing to do. I cancelled a holiday booked long before we knew about the virus in March and lost a lot of money.
I’m sorry you can’t go on holiday but don’t like your attitude to folks who point out it was a bad idea to book in these circumstances

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/10/2020 19:06

Right - so I’m selfish, shameful, idiotic and moronic - for following the rules exactly and booking only according to guidance.

But this isn't true, is it OP? You were under Tier 3 rules when you booked the holiday and Tier 3 clearly says

"You're advised against travelling out of your area (although exceptions apply, for example for work, education or caring responsibilities)."

You made a decision to ignore the advice. So don't pull the poor me act now.

Bubblemonkey · 31/10/2020 19:08

why would anyone in their right mind get on a plane at the moment Hmm even if you've been isolating, it doesn't mean everyone else has.

cabbageking · 31/10/2020 19:11

Just said no travel abroad in the 4 week lock down for holidays. Who knows after that time?
