I've just woke up and read we may be heading for a National lockdown

I think I must have been living under a rock the last few days as this is the first I've heard of it.

I've tried not to read the news too much as it just worries me.

I'm really in a panic now. How will we all get through a winter lockdown? The summer one was bad enough but at least we had the sun and bright days.

I was so happy to have my job back, my company will not survive another full lockdown.

If the school close I feel that will be disastrous. My dc have loved being back and have literally skipped into school every day since September. I really hope the schools will stay open.

How the hell can I organize Christmas like this!

I can feel myself getting really stressed out and worried about everything.

I can't believe I couldn't see this coming sooner!

If people had followed the rules all along we wouldn't need this.

I know MN is not real life but I have been sickened for months by the posters on her saying they are not following the rules.

Maybe now they will wind their necks in and start behaving less selfishly.

Teateaandmoretea · 31/10/2020 09:16

@Itisbetter we also can’t keep locking down. That is simple fact, the cure is far worse than the illness

purplepandas · 31/10/2020 09:16

Me too @Powerof4. I also think our uni should move to online teaching only, staff are unhappy here about his and many students not attending (1/3 in class this week for me).

the80sweregreat · 31/10/2020 09:18

I remember Sir Patrick Valence saying that children were not ' at risk' being at school back in March , but he didn't mention the adults that go to work there every day. It was at the start of all this when the media were calling to shut the schools. He didn't say up to what age they are deemed as not at risk either.
Schools can only do so much to minimize the risk , but it's an uphill battle.
I haven't the answers but it's a blow for hospitality and some shops if this does happen.
If schools are open people won't comply even as well as they did in March. Even then it was patchy especially when people like Dominic Cummings broke the rules and were found out.
Whatever they do won't be easy but keeping schools open is a huge problem.
Another u turn by the government too. Saving Christmas! It's just another another soundbite.

Itisbetter · 31/10/2020 09:20

Don’t be ridiculous @Teateaandmoretea how can staying at home even to the point of losing your wealth be worse than dying due to lack of care, or even just dying without care? You seem to have very little imagination or are unusually attached to things rather than people..

Hyperfish101 · 31/10/2020 09:22

Lockdown to December the. Open up for Xmas. Maybe they could do an eat out to help out again. That worked well didn’t it? Figures suggest up to 17% COVID cases related to this initiative.

Also, the lockdown should have happened by now and we could have been coming out of it! They are useless. Also this drip feed of info via the media makes me sick. Just have some bloody transparency!

Teateaandmoretea · 31/10/2020 09:22

@Itisbetter no it is you being utterly ridiculous and entitled. A lot of people won’t have homes to live in or good food to eat. Our children’s health with be damaged forever. There will be no money left for healthcare.

You really think this is caused by rule breakers? It's a seasonal airborne respiratory virus and its coming into autumn/winter. Everyones back to work and school/college/uni and these increases are allover Europe, not just here. It has not been caused solely by breaking rules...
Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 09:23

I just hope it’s not as draconian as France.

Teateaandmoretea · 31/10/2020 09:25

@Jrobhatch29 I agree totally, these people have been brainwashed that Covid is our own fault. It’s a nasty virus that has probably mutated to be more infectious.

wheresmymojo · 31/10/2020 09:26

@Maybenexttime08

We're meant to be moving into a new build at the end of November. I presume that will now be off the cards. Gutted

Moving house goes ahead in lockdowns

YuckYuckTea · 31/10/2020 09:26

Don't think so. Keeping schools open is wise. They have to strike a balance: reduce the impact of the virus with as little disruption to the economy and education as possible.

Instead of clapping for the NHS maybe we should clap for teachers and education this time round?

wheresmymojo · 31/10/2020 09:26

@allthingsred

I am exactly the same as you had no idea this was coming. I'm sat here sobbing. I can't see how we will survive. It was hard enough over the summer even at 80% my partner was due to go back to work Monday. So we had just started to think all would be ok. That won't happen now. He will without a doubt be laid off. We are just on the border line of not being entitled to benefits which means we have no support but all the same bills. We can't afford it. If I hear they are doing this to save Christmas one more time I will scream... What Christmas? We won't be having one here. I'm literally spiralling and can't see how as a family we will get through. Economy vs health... Both are done for me.

What does your husband do?

I expect less to be closed this time compared to March...

listsandbudgets · 31/10/2020 09:28

Great.

And why this obsession with sending in years 7-9 when its years 10-13 that are preparing for exams? How are they supposed to prepare practical subjects like science and drama and art for example from the kitchen table?

TheGinGenie · 31/10/2020 09:28

It is absolutely not the fault of the public, it's the fault of a shambolic government who broke their own rules, and can't get a test and trace system to work because they gave £12 billion to their mates instead of people who knew what they were doing.

AngryBananaSund · 31/10/2020 09:30

I’m sorry if I’ve missed this up-thread, but what time will the announcement be on Monday? (we were planning a weeks building work, and we don’t want to stop half way through and have to live with a big hole in the wall until December)

ReadySteadyBed · 31/10/2020 09:30

I find it so crazy that people who call for a lockdown don’t see how money, the economy and finances are so interlinked with health. The whole people vs money argument....that we should put people before money. But they are one and the same...I’m shocked how short sighted people are being on this.

Teateaandmoretea · 31/10/2020 09:31

@ReadySteadyBed they are the true covidiots

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 31/10/2020 09:31

@FixTheBone

It's a sad indictment of UK media that this is the first time you've caught wind of it

Don't be daft. What do you expect the media to do if the OP doesn't watch the NEWS? (Or spend enough time on MN) hand deliver a paper to her?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/10/2020 09:31

Too easy to blame the government but all governments are trying their best in uncertain times where much is still unknown about the virus.

Too many in real life and on MN aren’t complying so measures aren’t working. Many shame others for dating to think about reporting breaches. How many have sent ill children into schools?

As for vitamin d, it’s very cheap to buy so if people want to do that to protect themselves then they can. I suspect many are. Not everything has to be free from the government.

Redrosesandsunsets · 31/10/2020 09:33

It’s interesting timing that the uk goes into shut down just as the USA has their big election and also so much uncertainty coming on the horizon. What is going on?

allthingsred · 31/10/2020 09:34

@wheresmymojo he works in tourism. He was only supposed to be going back after furlough this week.
He struggled with his mh not being able to work. I suffer with my mh anyway. But we got through it . The added pressure of this time of year.. It's difficult to stay positive

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 31/10/2020 09:34

@LienD

We're back in lockdown in Belgium. All Non-essential shops are closed, restaurants and bars were already closed. School has an extra week of holiday, so they'll be back on 15/11. After that, kids until 13years of age can go to school physically, for the others it's virtual again. Working from is now mandatory again.

You can see one extra person in your house as a 'close contact'. And outside you can meet up with up to 4 people, but respecting social distancing and wearing masks. Kids up to 12y are not counted in these figures.

All non-urgent medical appointments are cancelled.

That all sounds very sensible. Ours (England) will not be that sensible.

I'm shocked at how people can't see that an uncontrolled virus devastates the economy and the NHS.

I'm shocked at how the government has led us , for the second time, to the situation where a long lockdown is needed. Why did they avoid the short 2 week circuit breaker advised in September , all its done is walked us to a longer more harmful lockdown. What do they gain from trashing the economy in this way?

Teateaandmoretea · 31/10/2020 09:38

The government need to advise people to take it, they haven’t and won’t.
