IF the firebreak lockdown in Wales works.......

IF the firebreak lockdown in Wales works and brings the R number down a lot, would you support a similar UK one or an England only short, strict lockdown?

Sirzy · 29/10/2020 17:12

I support it now.

By the time we know if it’s working in wales then the situation in England stands to be even more out of control

Armi · 29/10/2020 17:17

I do think the government have been totally wrong on this one. It would have made perfect sense for a two week firebreak in England over half term. As well as helping cases, it would also give us teaching folk a chance to road test the mandatory online teaching preparations so we know all is well and staff are fully trained and ready to roll if a longer period of lockdown is required in the future.

They are a bunch of fucking spanners, they really are.

NotAKaren · 29/10/2020 17:21

Personally I cannot see that this will work in a short period and it will either be extended or maybe tweaked a bit with some relaxation in certain areas. Same has happened in Scotland.

Dozer · 29/10/2020 17:23

‘Firebreak’?

So many bullshit, meaningless terms around covid.

Mamimawr · 29/10/2020 17:27

@NotAKaren The one in Wales is not going to be extended. The government here have said that shops, gyms etc are going to reopen on the 9th.

OP posts:
Armi · 29/10/2020 17:27

Why is it a meaningless term, Dozer? It makes sense to me.

Mamimawr · 29/10/2020 17:29

We're likely to have another Wales only short lockdown in January unless there's an UK wide one planned.

OP posts:
1questionshootout · 29/10/2020 17:32

The one in Northern Ireland ( being called a circuit breaker) appears to be working, figures today show the R number less than 1

Mamimawr · 29/10/2020 17:34

That's brilliant news @1questionshootout How long did it take to work?

OP posts:
starrynight19 · 29/10/2020 17:35

Seems we are just throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best.
I really hope it does work for Wales and Northern Ireland.

RonaLisa · 29/10/2020 17:37

@Dozer

‘Firebreak’?

So many bullshit, meaningless terms around covid.

Quite.

And no, I didn't support the first lockdown, and would decidedly not support a second one in thought, or word, or deed.

Cornettoninja · 29/10/2020 17:38

@Armi

Why is it a meaningless term, Dozer? It makes sense to me.
It’s not meaningless and has a well established pre-covid meaning.

What @Dozer means is they don’t ascribe it any meaning and have decided since they think it’s bullshit they simply must let everyone know ASAP.

NotAKaren · 29/10/2020 17:38

Hopefully that's the case OP but I am sceptical that it will be under control enough by then.

1questionshootout · 29/10/2020 17:38

We are 2 weeks into a 4 week breaker, though schools will go back next week.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 29/10/2020 17:40

It will only work once BoJo stops all International Flights landing, and the whole UK are in unison together with the 2 week circuit breaker.

Dozer · 29/10/2020 17:40

‘Firebreak’ and ‘circuit break’ applied to covid are just spin/meaningless.

Scottishgirl85 · 29/10/2020 17:41

What do you mean by 'work'? It will delay the spread a little, nothing more. I support delaying of course, but we are too far from a vaccine so the benefit of a short delay will be minimal and must be balanced against costs, such as economy, jobs, non-Covid health etc.

MonaCorona · 29/10/2020 17:42

@Dozer

‘Firebreak’ and ‘circuit break’ applied to covid are just spin/meaningless.
Yes. They are trying to confer spurious gravitas on a disastrous idea.
Scottishgirl85 · 29/10/2020 17:43

The government will be keen not to use the maximum power too soon, we're not even in winter yet...

MonaCorona · 29/10/2020 17:45

@GalaxyCookieCrumble

It will only work once BoJo stops all International Flights landing, and the whole UK are in unison together with the 2 week circuit breaker.
Not going to happen. Too many people can't afford not to work. Too many other people can't afford not to see people. A critical mass of people swallowed the reasons for the first lockdown; it was based on the government having scared people to such an extent that they were guaranteed compliance. Too much has happened then, and too many members of the government and their advisors have demonstrated by their actions that the lockdown was never necessary in the first place. Surely even the most gullible Covidophile can see this.
LangClegsInSpace · 29/10/2020 17:45

If they used the time to fix test & trace (i.e. hand it to LAs) then I would be in favour.

Kazmerelda · 29/10/2020 17:45

Honestly it’s meaningless because people have had enough. People won’t adhere to things now, because we have t had anyone leading the way they should.

I think they will leave it to people's judgement and if a lot of deaths blame us.

What baffles me is if more people die it’s going to screw the economy either way if there isn’t anyone in the jobs needed.

BlanchflowerTulip · 29/10/2020 17:47

They use "firebreak" because they don't want to say "lockdown". Its re-branding.

CremeEggThief · 29/10/2020 17:47

Think it's probably too late to do it now. If the government had followed the scientific advice at the right time, then I think it would have worked.

Chloemol · 29/10/2020 17:48

I support one now, Boris has missed a trick as it should have started this week. I am also happy to do a full on one like France or Germany.
