IF the firebreak lockdown in Wales works.......

IF the firebreak lockdown in Wales works and brings the R number down a lot, would you support a similar UK one or an England only short, strict lockdown?

MushMonster · 29/10/2020 17:52

I think it will work indeed. Just a few more weeks to see.
But I really think all UK should do this together?

IheartNiles · 29/10/2020 17:52

No I don’t, they can go to fuck.

PicsInRed · 29/10/2020 17:53

NO

MonaCorona · 29/10/2020 18:03

@Kazmerelda

Honestly it’s meaningless because people have had enough. People won’t adhere to things now, because we have t had anyone leading the way they should.

I think they will leave it to people's judgement and if a lot of deaths blame us.

What baffles me is if more people die it’s going to screw the economy either way if there isn’t anyone in the jobs needed.

I would reply, very gently, that this is because most (not all, but most) people of working age will either be asymptomatic or will have a relatively mild dose which will just require a week off work. And they wouldn't all have it at the same time. And a lot of them simply wouldn't get it at all, because they would have natural immunity. It really wouldn't screw the economy.
Delatron · 29/10/2020 18:04

What does ‘work’ mean though? What will it do? It will definitely screw up many people’s jobs and mental health. We open up and cases go right back up again. You’ve delayed the inevitable. We can’t lock down until a vaccine can we? So?

If you want to ‘relieve pressure on the NHS’ you’ll need a lockdown until April and we’re going in to flu season.

Otherwise we are just delaying the inevitable.

MarshaBradyo · 29/10/2020 18:06

Define work wrt a short, lower restriction lock down which is what it is

And no

DBML · 29/10/2020 18:08

It’s not going to work in Wales.

Before we broke up for half term, many of the year groups affected by Covid were years 7 and 8. They are back in next Monday and their parents (as well as the primary aged pupils) and teachers will all be back out and about. That’s hundreds of thousands of people back on the move and mixing in just a few days time.

Initially you might see numbers drop a bit because of this week, but then it’ll start to rise quickly enough once again.

During this “firebreak” I’ve seen groups of kids hanging about. My son was invited to his friends house (I said no), but the other boys went and DS felt very left out.

In the county I live, many people work and commute to Bristol/ Gloucester. That continues.

I think I’m past caring now, I guess I have been for a while. I can’t wait for the gyms to open back up and I’m desperate for a coat, so I’ll be shopping like crazy.

Everyone will be bored (we’re not allowed to go and buy a book or a jigsaw) and we’re all worried about more lockdowns before Christmas, so you can bet your bottom dollar, that shoppers will be out in force just as soon as they can be. I’m desperate to get into Primark!

The firebreak we’re seeing is desperate and political and half-arsed and it might cause a blip in Covid figures, but it’s doubtful that it will have any meaningful impact. The local large hospitals are struggling right now and WAG is hoping that one week of being at home is going to make the difference.

ImMoana · 29/10/2020 18:09

Would I support it? No.
Would I comply with it? Yes.

We’ve already done 7 days in isolation while trying to get a test and wait for the negative results and 14 days in isolation following a positive result. So 21 days totally isolated in 6 weeks. It’s been really hard.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/10/2020 21:20

I wouldn't support it and I would only comply to a point. If I wanted to go out for more than one walk a day I would and I'd go to the local shop if I fancied a bar of chocolate unlike last time when I complied.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/10/2020 21:25

Fuck no!
It was vaguely bearable during spring, can’t do this on and off through winter. Ok it works for Xmas and then what we are all buggered again come January?!

HalfPastThree · 29/10/2020 21:28

If it does bring infections down it hasn't necessarily solved anything. It might just delay the peak to the flu season, or the late winter coronavirus season. Either would be bad.

BunsyGirl · 29/10/2020 21:30

@Chloemol Germany are not having a “full on” lockdown.

GabriellaMontez · 29/10/2020 21:34

@IheartNiles

No I don’t, they can go to fuck.
This.
Tangledyarn · 29/10/2020 21:34

I think we should have implemented it a month ago, it's so late now that it will take weeks if not months to bring R down.

Doilooklikeatourist · 29/10/2020 21:35

Live in Wales , and to be honest , I think it's not going to work
TBH , it's a nightmare , Ok , we can go outside for walks , but it hasn't stopped raining long enough , and it's nearly November so the weathers not getting better
The restrictions don't really make sense , not able to buy a book in Tesco , Only exercise from your home , o driving to the beach for a walk .. yet our neighbours have gone to Tenerife and won't need to quarantine their return ... I don't understand

starfro · 29/10/2020 21:42

You can see here what they want to achieve.

Note that is doesn't make a huge difference if it is succesful, and its only aim is to reduce hospital capacity. Total deaths will remain similar to no firebreak as they are just delayed (as you'd expect).

IF the firebreak lockdown in Wales works.......
Chloemol · 29/10/2020 22:37

@BunsyGirl

I know, nor are France, schools will remain open. And I don’t have a problem with that here

Figmentofmyimagination · 29/10/2020 22:45

How many times though? Two weeks’ lockdown buys just around a month of delay - do we just keep cycling in and out of being closed down? It’s a poor idea. Would be more understandable if there was a clear path out of this.

Nannyamc · 29/10/2020 22:46

Here in the ROI we are on level.5 restriction for 6 weeks
Basically total lockdown

Numbers
decreased
Schools back open monday

CookieMumsters · 29/10/2020 22:47

I would, if it was to show a significant reduction in hospital admissions / pressure on hospitals but I dont think it will

cardibach · 29/10/2020 22:49

@Doilooklikeatourist your neighbours have broken lockdown then. We aren’t supposed to be travelling. You can’t really blame the government if it doesn’t work because idiots continue to do whatever the hell they want.

Purpledaisychain · 29/10/2020 22:58

If it works in Wales then I support it. It would be better to have a fortnight firebreak than fall down the same hole as France and Germany and be looking at a month or more.

shesellsseashells99 · 29/10/2020 23:13

@GalaxyCookieCrumble

It will only work once BoJo stops all International Flights landing, and the whole UK are in unison together with the 2 week circuit breaker.
He won't do that as we reply too much on foreign workers. We have new foreign workers arriving in my work place nearly every week. It wouldn't actually function without them
StarCat2020 · 30/10/2020 00:30

yet our neighbours have gone to Tenerife and won't need to quarantine their return ... I don't understand
The reason why you (and I) don't understand it is because it makes no sense at all.

Treatedlikeamaid · 30/10/2020 01:11

Agree blanchflower. It’s like in lockdown when they needed to appear as if things were progressing..so changed the logo.
..and changing The rather bleak sounding phrase ‘no deal’ to the so much sunnier sounding ‘Australia deal’
