On the BBC - older ones he says. Will they listen to him though now he got kicked off Sage? I thought the plan for for part time in secondary not closing if cases rose very high? Hoping this doesn't happen DC mid GCSEs and already missed loads.

Ferguson has not authority to say anything. He broke the rules in lockdown.

However if they do this they will have to cancel exams again. My DS is in year 11 and is so stressed out already.

Wakemeuuuup · 24/10/2020 18:18

No authority

ThrawnCow · 24/10/2020 18:21

They won't listen to him, but they may listen to other scientists who agree with him, who are still in SAGE. But they won't be closing schools any time soon. It's the hill BJ will die on, I reckon.

Orangeblossom7777 · 24/10/2020 18:23

I know WHO said to only close them as a 'last resort'. I expect they will listen to them more.

Why is he still getting airtime?

Orangeblossom7777 · 24/10/2020 18:25

Who knows. He seems to pop up now and again.

Yep, that.

meditrina · 24/10/2020 18:29

He seems to be saying that if current measures do not work, then school closures may become inevitable.

As the Government gazetted on 30th September a requirement for schools to be ready to provide remote learning, I think this counts as 'no shit Sherlock'

Orangeblossom7777 · 24/10/2020 18:32

I think there was a plan, for older pupils to go to half of them in class for two weeks or something though. before closing. From Boris I mean. That would be before closing would it not.

As an aside I noticed that in Sweden they did similar in the Spring (closed to over 15s)

It basically says all schools must be ready by 22 October for remote learning at any time directed by the Sec of State.

I’m certain that the lower years of secondary ie 7-9 will end up closIng. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong somehow.

No exams, old enough to look after themselves at home, Old enough to be taught online. And part of an overcrowded system where it’s all spreading.

toxtethOgradyUSA · 24/10/2020 19:00

Why is any media outlet giving air time to this complete and utter bellend? Being consistently wrong with his projections - often by huge margins - is one thing. Breaking lockdown rules and completely undermining the government's message is something else entirely. If he had an ounce of humility he would be keeping his head below the parapet but his rampant ego wont allow him to. Twat.

sirbobblysock · 24/10/2020 19:33

What toxteth says - he has no credibility. Gives scientists a bad name.

RaggieDolls · 24/10/2020 19:34

Whether or not schools end up closing I can't believe the cheek of this man expecting anyone to respect his views.

In Wales we are shut for. Week after half term except for primary and Y7 and 8. I would t assume it’ll be the younger ones shut.
MangoFeverDream · 24/10/2020 19:36

Why is this loser even getting press?

Starlight101 · 24/10/2020 19:38

Yep, that.

Unfortunately it won’t be only him who will die on that hill. By keeping schools open as he is, with no protective measures thus allowing the community spread, it will be 10s of 1000s of people Boris will be sentencing to death
dollychopss · 24/10/2020 19:43

Neil F is a no body he broke his own rules enough said

Fredchicken · 24/10/2020 19:51

He had NO authority.

PicsInRed · 24/10/2020 19:53

I think "Neil Ferguson" should close.

TheKeatingFive · 24/10/2020 20:09

And why would we be listening to him again?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/10/2020 20:15

He won’t back down as too much pressure was put on by parent groups who wanted their children back in school regardless of the staff and vulnerable families and children. Even now many still want them open despite of case numbers and communities on lock down.

Fawking · 24/10/2020 20:20

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss if you take anything from Marcus Rashford's campaign is that there is a real risk to a high number of children if schools close. It's not as simple as closing them to keep everyone safe.

It's a horrible choice but open or closed people are at risk. That's why a lot of people want them open - it's not to spite teachers.

Rosehip10 · 24/10/2020 20:25

Discredited and a hypocrite too.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/10/2020 20:33

Then SS can step in if people aren’t feeding children and ensure parents step up or they take action. All staff and children deserve to have their health protected, issues like food can be resolved by other means.
