School case - refusing to isolated child!

Pixilulu · 24/10/2020 16:41

A friend received an email from school saying her child had to self isolate for 14 days as a close contact from school has tested positive.

She is refusing to self isolate the child - saying you only need to when you have symptoms.

She has been in contact with the rest of the class parents and they are also not isolating their children!!! Some already gone on holiday, already been to swimming lessons etc.

This is crazy!!!

Well they are morons and hopefully some of them will be fined as an example to others.

Dustballs · 24/10/2020 16:58

It’s not law. They can’t be fined.

Kitcat122 · 24/10/2020 17:06

Well they are beyond selfish.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/10/2020 17:15

Have you reported to the school? It should equal loss of a school pace imo then more people would follow it.

3littlewords · 24/10/2020 17:16

My DS had to isolate last week because of a close contact in school he tells me some of his classmates have been playing out 🤦‍♀️

TiersTiersTiers · 24/10/2020 17:41

What part of the country is this?

Punkpumpkin · 24/10/2020 17:46

Hmmm yep my dh had parents refusing to pick dc up earlier this week when they needed to isolate as ‘we’re coming to get them in an hour anyway on our way to the airport’ 🤐

Sweettea1 · 24/10/2020 18:00

Crazy that the kids have to isolate for 2 weeks but if you work in a care home the staff don't have to isolate if been in contact with a positive the guidelines are ridiculous thought it was about protecting the vulnerable.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 24/10/2020 18:04

This is exactly the same as is happening in my school. The community are not following the rules in the most blatant fashion and as a result we have 11 members of staff with Covid. They won't test their children or follow any guidelines/instructions. Every day I'm turning isolating children away from the yard who have come with parents to collect siblings. Or going out to the park opposite to send home "isolating" children.
We are in a very deprived area with almost 100% families with English as a second language. I am beyond angry that my dedicated, caring staff are in work every day like sitting ducks waiting to get ill and the best Public Health can offer us is translated guidance.
Sorry for the rant. Very stressed and annoyed.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/10/2020 18:05

My dd is isolating due to 2 cases in her year group - several of her friends have been out and about.

This is awful! I’m so sorry you and your staff are having to cope with this kind of behaviour. The parents at my children’s school and nursery are definitely not behaving like this. I really appreciate everything all the UK teachers are doing this year.
TheHouseonHauntedHill · 24/10/2020 18:13

I'm quite sure it is the law!
There are clear dept health guidelines, and in many languages. I'd call the police.

Dustballs · 24/10/2020 18:17

It is far too long. 2 weeks. Most kids round here live in tiny flats with no outdoor space.

You imprison kids like this. Fine for those in large houses maybe.

And what about kids in abusive households?

It is not law. It is not enforceable and people need to stop judging.

Dustballs · 24/10/2020 18:19

There we go @GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy

And you’re a teacher! You’ve said it yourself. Do you have no empathy for these ‘deprived’ kids shut in tiny spaces?

Seriouslyconfused3 · 24/10/2020 18:21

I don’t think YABU but what are you supposed to do if you have more than one child in school and no one to watch the isolated child while you take/ pick up the others? Genuine question

Nyancat · 24/10/2020 18:24

Sorry that you find the incubation period for a virus inconvenient dustballs! People don't need to stop judging, people need to start following the isolation guidance.

There is having empathy for how difficult it may be to have to stay indoors - and there is following a law designed to stop other people becoming very ill and possibly dying.

We have had the whole of a year group having to isolate (secondary). Two of them were blatantly breaking the rules and trespassing where they should not have been - putting others at risk.

The police have cautioned them and parents have been issued with a hefty fine, I understand. So yes - it is the law.

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:26

Guidelines may reflect the law, but they are not law in themselves.

No leadership anymore. How do they expect people to care when conspiracy theorists are far more vocal and accessible than the government?

(I am following the law, but can understand why others are not.)

Our school have said in that situation you have to keep all your kids at home Sad
Dustballs · 24/10/2020 18:28

We have been told that children don’t have symptoms or spread the virus. That is why it’s safe for us to send our kids to school and safe for teachers to be there.

Yet kids (primary too) are forced to isolate for 2 weeks if in contact with a positive case. It doesn’t make sense.

Are they contagious or aren’t they? Are schools safe or are they not?

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:29

The law applies to those contacted by test and trace, and to those returning from overseas.

Fred, you don't get a caution and a fine, it doesn't work like that. Sounds like your understanding is flawed.

DamitJanet · 24/10/2020 18:30

If you are instructed to isolate as a close contact by test and it is law and is enforceable. There is some grey area when that instruction has been delegated through schools, but fines have been issued in some cases, whether they’d survive an appeal or not hasn't been tested yet as far as I’m aware.
It’s two weeks because the virus does what it does, regardless of what size house you live in. Perfectly possibly to have empathy with people having to isolate, but still feel it should be followed correctly to protect others.

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:31

This thread is a perfect example of how screwed up government messaging is!

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 24/10/2020 18:34

And you’re a teacher! You’ve said it yourself. Do you have no empathy for these ‘deprived’ kids shut in tiny spaces?
You have no clue about my empathy for my children or the work I do to improve their life chances so please don't make comments like that. I do, however, also have a duty of care to my staff.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 24/10/2020 18:35

ABSOLUTELY incorrect. Children may not show symptoms but they sure as hell are spreading it.
