Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

“New regime” - he’s going to go for 6 tiers, isn’t he?

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 23/10/2020 14:18

In the last two weeks, my washing machine died and needed a part, my heating/hot water died and needed a part, and my electricity was cut off due to an error by my supplier (identifying, but fuck it). Without my lucky extenuating circumstances, it would have taken approx six days to get my power back, in which time I probably would have needed to buy extra duvets at least!

If that happens to someone now, what's the solution?

I guess at least they can drink vodka to feel warm 🙄

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 23/10/2020 14:19

Perhaps the answer is, if you want a duvet then you have to shoplift one

haha we just said that he would have to trump Sturgeon..
IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 14:21

She'll invent a 7th tier just to make sure that nobody is seen to be more concered with 'keeping us safe' than her.

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 14:21

OH just said they have blocked up access to the river with bollards, chains now. So no dog walking there. So that is 1000`s acres of snowdonia out, Conwy river out, it is not 6pm yet on my watch.

That would be doubleplusungood, indeed.
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:23

6 tiers? I just check the council website before I do anything that is not work/ shop/ gym, just to manage to keep up to speed now. 6 tiers sounds like a difficult to upkeep scheme.

Hang on - you can walk in your local area can't you?
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:25

I do not know what is wrong with countryside!
On the other hand, this virus has already proved to be able to pass from humans to animals, and then back to humans... and it seems to have outbreaks in food related factories. So I wonder if it may have something to do with that?

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 14:28

I live in a rural area and no access to open spaces has been blocked around here

HalfBrick · 23/10/2020 14:29

I think one of the reasons they've said no clothes etc in supermarkets is because people won't be as compliant/scared as they were last time and would use going to Tesco to browse clothes as 'something to do' as there's bugger all else.

That and to keep the independent clothes shops happy as they said.

I'm happy with the 2 week thing as long as they lift that bollocks don't stay in your county rule afterwards.

HalfBrick · 23/10/2020 14:30
  • stay in your county
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:33

The virus wil not disappear, so I think we will get to the same we have now, which is local lockdowns in most of Wales. If not, we will get the 5 miles rule back.

RedToothBrush · 23/10/2020 14:38

I bet its about kayaking not walking.

They dont want groups on the water (risk of ending up in A&E).

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 14:39

@poorbuthappy nope they are blocking up our local river, our local hills. Drunk on power this council is.

Nothing to do with kayaking, you do not kayak on this stretch it is just for walkers. You cannot launch from this point.

You are lucky, last time it was grim here. Looks like groundhog here today.

So you think our local sheep, cattle are carrying covid then?
BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 23/10/2020 14:47

Surely it goes without saying that you should be staying an appropriate "social distance" from someone else's livestock anyway? Even if the cattle do harbour covid (which I'm not entirely sure there is evidence for...), why would you be less than 2m away from them?!

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 15:00

No sheep or cattle that I know of, but there has been some farmed species proven to die from it in masses and to spread it back to humans. It was mink. In different countries. Maybe mink is a species close to the one it harbour in it originally? They have mentioned cats, tigers and apes too, but not sure they are 100% sure.
The minks are 100% sure. There is still lots of things we need to learn about this virus. Including whether it spreads to cattle and poultry or not. Because there has been outbreaks on meat processing factories, in Wales and other countries too.

myrtilles · 23/10/2020 15:09

What is happening in Wales is absurd. There is no evidence that going shopping is a major spreader of covid. They are causing unnecessary harm to shops in the key weeks leading up to Christmas and it will only lead to more job losses, more high street shops closing and being boarded up and more people shopping online. There is no guarantee it will only be for 17 days either.

I gather that most secondary school year groups will be taught remotely from half term which would be terrible for the affected year groups.
I feel so sorry for the people of Wales.

Whats going to happen in the run up to Christmas when all the people who haven't done Christmas shopping and don't want to pay for delivery are allowed to go to the shops again?
lljkk · 23/10/2020 15:20

I thought I heard Drayford saying that "buying a candle in Tesco is not essential". Thing is, it's autumn. UK gets storms in autumn. We need candles when there are power outages due to the autumn storms.

Essential does seem to be subjective...
