Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

@eurochick

Surely people aren't going to stand for this shit? We are in this for the long haul. Leaders need to take people with them, not make their lives more difficult.
Yeah I agree with you. I can understand that they want to discourage people from going to the shops, but they are risking losing people's goodwill.

During the last lockdown, were the clothes and homeware aisles cordoned off, I can't remember?

ChaToilLeam · 23/10/2020 13:45

Who defines essential? One person’s essential is another’s frivolity.

Will they ban the sale of fags and booze, I wonder... Hmm

Juniperandrage · 23/10/2020 13:47

@CoffeeInAnIV

I don't know if this has been posted but this is in South Wales. Duvets aren't essential items.

Where to?

Also what an effing waste of plastic

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 13:47

@IcedPurple

We're coming into winter, but duvets are not 'essential'?

Some people are absolutely revelling in the misery and, scarily, many seem ready to accept any absurdity thrown at them Because Covid.

Doncha know you just chuck all your coats on top of you to stay warm like they did in the war.
CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:48

@bibbitybobbitycatz Last lockdown everything was open in the supermarkets. Could even get DIY bits etc.

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:48

@Juniperandrage Unsure where this location is but my dad has popped to Newport Tesco Extra and they're currently doing the same.

Littleposh · 23/10/2020 13:49

Chocolate, crisps etc are non essential, are they going to stop selling them too

They won`t it is a placebo, they did in South Africa, funnily enough the men who could no longer get hold of booze and drugs the beating up of their families stopped once they were clean and sober.

In the future, people will look back and study the psychological impacts of Covid 19.

Did the nation go collectively insane?

Let’s not forget that Drakeford and his gang are not immune to suffering these psychological effects as well.

Drakeford has gone straight from suffering huge family trauma with his rapist & paedophile son put in prison; to landing the top job in the country; and now to managing the nation through this, whilst his wife and mother suffer badly from the virus.

Is he really in the best mental place to be making these decisions?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/10/2020 13:53

So what happens if you get a burst pipe or a blocked sink? DIY stuff is essential.

last time B&Q would allow you to buy plumbing stuff, hardware stores are allowed to stay open
BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 23/10/2020 14:01

I'm waiting to see what will happen with fireworks. Not only are they non essential, selling them actually puts extra pressure on hospitals.

Kind of like booze and fags, but more immediate.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:03

I cannot believe it! Words fail meSad
Really they could just ask people nicely to avoid browsing or going overthere if not needed.
I do hope that they have the common sense to allow people asking for a particular item.....

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:05

Also it is the short notice! Why such a short notice?

Funkypolar · 23/10/2020 14:06

What does Drakeford mean by “the new regime” after 9th November?

EerieArmOff · 23/10/2020 14:07

I find it terrifying that the government can now decide what a person can/can't buy. Who are they to decide what is essential to an individual?

17 days or not, it shouldn't be allowed.

They really are testing the goodwill of the public now; we've been patient enough for the last 7 months, we haven't got much left.

PetitFours · 23/10/2020 14:08

Just stick your finger in the leak for a few days and order what you need on Amazon.

He did not elaborate said ministers are in discussion.

This is without exception one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. The government telling you that you can't buy a duvet or a kettle from a shop that's open to sell you other products.

I am literally done with all this total bollocks, and I'm not even in Wales.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:12

When has he said about the new regimen?
I need to read this one!
It does look like we are going up a big wave again, so I understand further restrictions, but silly stupid ones treating us like we are unable to decide on our own, and removing physical things from us will not have the effect they want.

EerieArmOff · 23/10/2020 14:12

@CoffeeInAnIV

I've got half a mind to rip open the covering and try to buy a duvet just to see what would happen. Utterly barmy.
I'm the same.

If you really needed a duvet and you could only access Tesco, what would they do to stop you? You could put the thing through self-checkout, or would it flag up that the duvet is contraband? There's no way they could implement something like that so quickly.

It's crazy.

PicsInRed · 23/10/2020 14:13

Drakeford doesn't come across as a terribly clever man.

Not terribly clever + absolute power = turkey time.

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 14:14

To think, people in China now have more freedom if independence than people in Wales.....Confused

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 14:15

In the not too distant future, that photo of Tesco staff cordoning off duvets considered 'non-essential' at the start of winter will come to symbolise the insanity and power play which have been such characteristics of this bizarre time.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 14:15

We will not be able to get a duvet if it is under this plastic covers....
