Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

@justasking111

OH just said they have blocked up access to the river with bollards, chains now. So no dog walking there. So that is 1000`s acres of snowdonia out, Conwy river out, it is not 6pm yet on my watch.
Seriously? How do they have the resources for all this nonsense?
cologne4711 · 23/10/2020 15:21

@lljkk

I thought I heard Drayford saying that "buying a candle in Tesco is not essential". Thing is, it's autumn. UK gets storms in autumn. We need candles when there are power outages due to the autumn storms.

Essential does seem to be subjective...

You can probably buy boring white candles but scented ones are too frivolous.
cologne4711 · 23/10/2020 15:28

Because we believe in suppressing the virus and making sure hospitals aren't overwhelmed. Its only 2 weeks, so we'll survive lol

There is zero evidence that stopping people buying clothes for their children or a replacement kettle in any way supresses the virus or reduces the load on hospitals.

Neither does banning people from going out for a walk a distance from their house.

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 15:29

Mixed households indoors absolutely needs to come back after this firebreak or so many hospitality businesses are going to go under. My friend owns a hospitality gaming business and is on the verge of closing entirely because without mixed households indoors and the local restrictions they're not generating enough income to survive.

cologne4711 · 23/10/2020 15:30

I said he wasn't very bright. You're not allowed to buy a kettle in the supermarket, but it's apparently ok to go round your friends and neighbours to ask them to lend you one - from the BBC news article on the subject:

"If people could not find essential products in supermarkets there were ways around the problem, he said, adding that friends and neighbours were "often very willing to help".

Monday. I'm just borrowing a cup of sugar. Tuesday. And a loaf of bread. Wednesday. And a drill. Thursday. And a candle. Friday. And a box of frogs.
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 15:35

Yes, let's pop in next door and ask for a duvet, recently used if possible. That is better than grabbing one in the supermarket?

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 15:36

What I don't understand is that I can't pick up a replacement kettle with my food shop for cheap but I can then drive to the local Curry's and buy one there which exposes myself twice to a virus.

BBCONEANDTWO · 23/10/2020 15:37

@toxtethOgradyUSA

Sturgeon and Drakeford are having a right old Covid-off! Surely Sturgeon will top him tomorrow. I'm going for full on martial law in Scotland Grin
Ha ha - you're right.
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 15:38

Will Currys be open? I thought they will close, as they did last time?

WankPuffins · 23/10/2020 15:41

Do these utter idiots actually listen to what they are saying? I’ll go knock on old Mabel next door and ask to borrow her manky spare duvet instead of just picking one up when I’m doing the shopping anyway and not speaking to anyone.

Shower of shits the lot of them.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/10/2020 15:41

I find it terrifying that the government can now decide what a person can/can't buy. Who are they to decide what is essential to an individual?

^ This!

This in spades. If people take a second to think about it or where it could lead, it’s horrifying.
CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 15:45

My father works in the warehouse and that's open. He says that's essential as people need fridges/ovens and appliances. He's not store-side so it might just be the warehouses for delivery and I got it wrong.

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 15:45

Russia never banned wodka!!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/10/2020 15:45

Drakford is a div

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 15:48

Ok if we can get hardware that is a worry less. I thought they will close as with the first lockdown when you could not get anything appart from the supermarket or online.
So, we only need to worry about clothes, shoes, and bedding for the 17 days

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 15:48

Amazing.

Well at least I know I’m fine to visit all my friends and neighbours now.

Thought mixing household was the biggest problem.

Turns out it’s supermarkets.

So I’ll avoid the supermarkets, and pop round to visit my friends.

As per advice from our First Minister.

ImAllOut · 23/10/2020 15:49

That's my local Tesco! Meanwhile I have to drive 45 minutes to work every day next week crossing 4 counties to sit in an office with people from all over South Wales, and my children are at a childminder's while I go. But God forbid I buy a new duvet.

It’s like a parody. He also suggested online shopping. How is that fairer to the businesses that he is apparently trying to protect from the unfair lockdown?
CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 15:54

The rules make no fucking sense and I'm sick of it. Can't see anything changing any time soon. As soon as the 9th comes there'll be more restrictions either in tiers, local lockdowns, or an outright extension of this. They said themselves it'll be the week of Nov 23rd before they see any real number changes so they'll just string us along while the gormless gnomes in charge make up the rules as they go along.

"Following the science" my arse.

dingit · 23/10/2020 15:56

Not welsh, but a few months into the national lock down, I asked our local Tesco if any of the staff had had the virus. Not one. Who are working there many hours a day as opposed to customers who pop in for say an average 30 mins, and pass people fleetingly.
I just don't get the logic. In fact I don't get any of it.

Doilooklikeatourist · 23/10/2020 15:59

Just back from my local Tesco , ( West Wales )
The harassed looking staff are building blockades with pallets of kitchen roll , blocking the aisle with the toys in , and cling filming the way into the clothing section
He has gone crazy with the powers , I really want to move over the bridge

I think Drakeford will announce 6 tiers ... with sub clauses , just to beat the Scots
