Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

@justasking111 it looks like "SD may be difficult there" Grin
They did put cones up here too, and barricades for the cars not even getting close to the start of the pathway.
We are in a city, so we can just walk in the street. I did not think about rural places where it can be a public area or the road without pavement. It did not cross my mind that they would close wide areas like that one... where you are highly unlikely to find anyone....

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 12:56

@justasking111

The image of cheese floating in coffee has never left me.
And I still remember the person who chastised people for shopping for milk more than once every 2 weeks, because you could freeze milk in ice cube trays and defrost a cube every time you fancied a cuppa.

I bet these same people were tut-tutting about 'hoarders' only a few weeks previously.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:58

At least the GP is open! I just got a text from them. First time ever! They seem to be finally catching up from the summer when it was mission impossible to get through to them.

SomewhereEast · 23/10/2020 12:59

And I don't buy the saving-small-businesses bollocks either. Welsh small businesses are going to be utterly fucked anyway given how lockdown happy the Welsh Government appears to be (if they're locking down at current levels, in bloody October, then its going to be an 'interesting' six months). Stopping people buying jeans in Tesco won't save them.

ultragroupie · 23/10/2020 13:03

what the fuck!! this is madness

Saucery · 23/10/2020 13:04

It is a stupid rule, but Amazon isn’t the only online retailer. It can be the quickest, easiest and cheapest but we’ve made a point of looking elsewhere for stuff we need. Lakeland for kitchen things, Dunelm for bedding, Mountain Warehouse for boots etc.
Not as good as browsing and trying on and far from ideal if you are on a budget or need things the next day, but every alternative online purchase that isn’t Amazon is a good thing.

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 13:09

@bibbitybobbitycatz seeing that you joined mumsnet to harrass me you will have to accept that I will not respond.

bibbitybobbitycatz · 23/10/2020 13:14

I didn't just join to harass you! I've been a member for a long time on and off under different names (cancel the cheque, penis beaker, snapped and farted, milk for cheese etc etc). I was bibbitybobbitycats until recently.

I am not harassing you, but challenging you to provide evidence of what you are asserting. It's a scary time, spreading rumours isn't helpful. If they aren't rumours and you can provide evidence, I apologise in advance.

halcyondays · 23/10/2020 13:19

Do shops actually make difference to the R number? Have they shown the modelling like NI has for the things they’re closing?

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 13:23

There are some graphs in other MN threads, but I have not seen any for ages in the local news. They have asked us to focus on our local authorities, so I am following the local daily numbers. I have not seen full data for ages indeed. I am off to google.

poorbuthappy · 23/10/2020 13:25

There's a photo on my FB feed showing Tesco employees covering aisles in plastic.

Not sure if there's enough plastic in the world for B&M...

gurglebelly · 23/10/2020 13:28

They've lost the plot, surely the idea is that people don't make unnecessary trips/spread it round multiple businesses. If they are there anyway why shouldn't they pick up non essentials? Barmy

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/10/2020 13:30

Even if none of the stuff we bought in the non food aisles at supermarkets was essential, it's still nice and cheers us up to buy the odd thing when we are in the shop anyway. People are going to be thoroughly miserable, especially if this extends past 17 days.
It's the level of control that's really pissing me off. Up until now I've been supportive of the 2 week circuit breaker idea, with a view to protecting jobs and the NHS in the longer term, but this essential purchases bollocks has totally fucked me off. The power has gone to Drakeford's head

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:32

He is absolutely bonkers.

I have a toddler and was planning on buying new sleepsuits, socks etc with the weekly shop next week so I only expose myself to the virus once. Also planning on buying a higher tog duvet.

Nope. Not anymore. I have to order online, pay a delivery fee, wait for them to come and expose myself and the delivery driver etc unnecessarily.

Fuming.

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:33

I don't know if this has been posted but this is in South Wales. Duvets aren't essential items.

Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.
frozendaisy · 23/10/2020 13:34

@MushMonster

Yes, all years up to yer 8 are going back to school on the second week. I still do not fully get why up to year 8?
Can only think that it's legal to leave children 12 and above at home I think.
poorbuthappy · 23/10/2020 13:36

@CoffeeInAnIV - that's the photo I saw.

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 13:36

Duvets!!

OH says condoms are essential but the ribbed and flavoured ones aren`t Grin

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 13:36

@CoffeeInAnIV

I don't know if this has been posted but this is in South Wales. Duvets aren't essential items.
This is absurd. People will look back in 10 years time and wonder if people went collectively insane.
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 13:37

www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-wales-52574859
There are some graphs here. Not about the shops effect in the R number, but is shows that the second wave is predicted to be higher than what we had earlier in the year if there are no measures taken indeed.
The gov.uk statistics can be seen too in their website, but many are for August or earlier, so they will not help much to assess what is happening now with shops and schools open.

eurochick · 23/10/2020 13:37

Surely people aren't going to stand for this shit? We are in this for the long haul. Leaders need to take people with them, not make their lives more difficult.

CeeJay81 · 23/10/2020 13:38

Yea ok I admit it is a bit silly to close certain aisles. As someone who lives rurally I'm used to prepping and thought it was a bit crazy the reaction for 2 weeks that's all.

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:38

The rules don't even come into force until 6pm but I can't go out at 4pm and grab some sleepsuits because everything's covered. This is absolutely batshit.

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 13:40

We're coming into winter, but duvets are not 'essential'?

Some people are absolutely revelling in the misery and, scarily, many seem ready to accept any absurdity thrown at them Because Covid.

CoffeeInAnIV · 23/10/2020 13:41

I've got half a mind to rip open the covering and try to buy a duvet just to see what would happen. Utterly barmy.
