Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

It's only for 17 days, if people listen and stay at home we'll have a nicer Christmas. People will be able to bubble with grandparents etc but if we carry on as we are the NHS in Wales will cripple.
This actually made laugh out loud .
Firstly if it's 17 days fair enough but as we know nothing is as it was the lockdown lasted longer than 3 weeks .
I'm in greater Manchester had restrictions since early August.
Secondly buying a pair of jeans is not going to cripple the nhs .
I'm not sure how you think the nhs is funded but silly rules like this will cripple the economy .
I honestly do not know what Wales are thinking with this bat shit rule next they will be stopping people buying anything not essential.

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 11:50

The big name chains tend to comply with all government advice and guidelines though, regardless of whether specific legislation has been put in place.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 11:53

I do hope so, but he should not be saying something that will not match the truth.
I am reading comments on the local news. Noone is happy about this. Example cases is someone taken into hospital. Most of us buy new clothes for their stay. Any workwear that needs replacing. Hardware that breaks.
But he is denying us to get any of this! Whe closing down all other retailers, really?

Janevaljane · 23/10/2020 11:55

@hamstersarse

It really is astounding that the Welsh are going to put up with this.

It is illogical.

It is power-crazed

It will achieve nothing other than to devastate business and economy

I have never had this thought before in my life about the 'Union' but I am starting to get really pissed that Scotland and Wales are implementing all these ridiculous restrictions and expecting England to pay for it all

Agree totally.
MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:00

During the lockdown, nobody was venturing into those aslides if they did not need anything for real. But to be denied it when you may needed. That is just wrong.
I had to buy a kettle as mine broke. Now, I consider that essential.
The microwave went too a little later. So same.
Same for clothing. Especially with children. And no everyone can afford to stock on tights now. Some people can only afford to buy as they need it.
It is a stupid move. It costs them nothing to ask please reduce the browsing to a minimum in the non-essentials. Instead of banning it.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:05

Look, I will have no problem if you have to say to a shop assistant you need something from there before going in or something similar. But if they are going to forbide it for these 17 days..... it does not matter that it does not get to be law. It is what the Welsh Goverment wants to be done. I think the supermarkets will comply. But that they think nothing of leaving people without any immediate access to these items....

movingonup20 · 23/10/2020 12:09

If only 17 days, be honest how many people cannot wait until that ends for new clothes/shoes/toys etc? In very limited circumstances I can see how a coat, shoes or similar may be urgently required eg existing one splits/breaks and you genuinely don't own a second coat/pair of shoes but is not common, most people have more than one pair of shoes or at least an older jacket, it's not even that cold. It's annoying and I'm not convinced necessary but saying that clothing purchases are essential is a stretch to say the least.

islockdownoveryet · 23/10/2020 12:09

It's just creating a even bigger problem isn't it .
All these places that have had to close pubs for example obviously the suppliers will loose money too .
Now it's suppliers selling clothes/ kettles / bath towels etc will loose money too when were probably doing ok previously.

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 12:14

This morning OH as he does most days in the company of other dog walkers went up into the hills to exercise the dogs. They have put up road closed signs so that you cannot access it.

Drakeford has said wild bird food is not essential. But you can buy budgie seed. The store said this morning that they would not ban us buying it.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:14

Well by this logic rule, as pubs are closing, then no alcohol should be sold in supermarkets or any other retailer for 17 days.
Yes, we can wait 17 days to change our wardrobe. No we should not put anyone in the position of getting items that eed replaced today, like a coat, socks, bedding, kitchenware....
Surely they can ask people not to browse on the non-essentials. But they should not ban selling this in the only places it can be purchased for those 17 days.

bibbitybobbitycatz · 23/10/2020 12:16

@Funkypolar

I can foresee another Easter situation on here where posters were called murderers for buying non essential Easter eggs.

It’ll be murders buying advent calendars and non essential food - turkeys, Brussel sprouts, mince pies etc. Better stick to gruel this Christmas.

Don't be silly.

All Drakeford is saying is that supermarkets will have to close their clothes and homewares section - he's not putting restrictions on what food we can buy. Plus it's only until 9th November.

Something similar was done nationwide when we went into lockdown, make-up section of Boots was closed etc.

bibbitybobbitycatz · 23/10/2020 12:18

Drakeford has said wild bird food is not essential. But you can buy budgie seed. The store said this morning that they would not ban us buying it

Do you have a link to where Drakeford has said that? Has the Welsh government provided a list of what we can and can't buy?

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:19

Other thing I do not understand, why closing public pathways? Some that were closed around here were hugely wide, so SD is easy to do.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 12:21

You can though just walk elsewhere.
But you will not be able to replace your walking shoes if they break on the same day. You will have to wait till the end of the 17 days.... or buy online.

Funkypolar · 23/10/2020 12:32

bibbitybobbitycatz - why don’t you look at posts at here from April? It’s not silly at all.

Funkypolar · 23/10/2020 12:35

“It’s only until the 9th November.” 😂

Sure! Just like restrictions in Scotland, Leicester etc.

Very sorry Funky. I thought that you meant we were officially going to be prevented from buying these things, rather than judged on MN!

I still remember the cheese instead of milk one...

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 12:41

Just now from Drakefords lips to your ears. post 9th November there will be a regime in place going forward..

No you cannot just walk elsewhere, last time cones, road blocks bred like rabbits here. Where OH went this morning was the head of tens of thousands of acres, stretching from Conwy across N Wales.
IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 12:49

@CeeJay81

Because we believe in suppressing the virus and making sure hospitals aren't overwhelmed. Its only 2 weeks, so we'll survive lol.
You 'believe' in it? Or you have seen evidence to support the view that being forbidden from picking up a pair of socks or a Halloween mask while doing the groceries will help to 'suppress the virus'?

It's astonishing how people will believe everything they're told so long as it's all about 'suppressing the virus'.

WankPuffins · 23/10/2020 12:49

I still remember the cheese instead of milk one...

It was that thread and comment that made me deregister the account I’d had on here since 2005. It made me realise just how strange so many people are.

(I came back though. I had a baby in the meantime and got bored):

Yes there will be something in place after 9th Nov, but when did he say I can't buy wildbird seed?
justasking111 · 23/10/2020 12:50

The image of cheese floating in coffee has never left me.

Sturgeon and Drakeford are having a right old Covid-off! Surely Sturgeon will top him tomorrow. I'm going for full on martial law in Scotland Grin
BBC is now reporting "Scotland to enter new five-tier Covid alert system"

Me too - and I'm Irish (living in England) so not normally one to side with Westminster Grin. I might think my home country is completely insane to be locking down again - which it is - but at least we're paying for it ourselves.
