Stricter measures than ever before. Wales to restrict what supermarkets can sell.

We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

It's only for 17 days, if people listen and stay at home we'll have a nicer Christmas. People will be able to bubble with grandparents etc but if we carry on as we are the NHS in Wales will cripple.

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 09:46

I don't think the situation has been handled perfectly by any means, but between "normal life" and total lockdown there has to be some sort of a middle ground which means some things will be permissible while others aren't.

I'm not sure if making arbitrary rules about what is and is not 'permissible' to buy is any sort of 'middle ground'. I think it's control freakery. And how will it work? Who gets to decide the 'permissibility' of certain purchases? Will they remove the smelly soaps - which are a needless frivolity - but leave deoderants on the next shelf? Will they take off the chocolate section - after all nobody 'needs' chocolate - but leave bread, pasta and eggs?

Deciding what people can and cannot purchase in the same shop is a step too far.

IcedPurple · 23/10/2020 09:49

I’m staying well away from Mumsnet over Christmas if that’s the case. It was almost laughable and quite scary in March/April. Some posters really lost the plot, it was worrying.

I remember a poster asking the permission of MNers to buy a tube of eye liner while she was waiting to pick up her prescription in Superdrug. Since eye liner is 'non-essential', maybe she shouldn't take the 10 seconds required to walk over to the cosmetics counter and pick it up?

toxtethOgradyUSA · 23/10/2020 09:52

@littlbrowndog

It was only 2 weeks in Scotland.

But now oh look. It’s being extended which everyone knew would happen

I think we have it bad in England sometimes but, my god, having that tinpot dictator Sturgeon as your leader - the mind boggles!
adagio · 23/10/2020 09:56

Presumably he has shares in amazon.

Thing is, how do you fight? Writing to MP or MS (Member of Senedd) appears to achieve the square root of f all.

Social media is a massive echo chamber due to the way AI works so it’s only if you move in circles of not liking it that you hear those views. He probably has a Twitter feed that’s full of approval for this stupid plan lol

Really feel for those who were waiting until pay day to get kids winter clothes :(

I don’t believe this will end on 9/11

CeeJay81 · 23/10/2020 09:56

Well I'm back in work on Tuesday(supermarket). We are a supermarket that doesn't sell clothes, we have a peacocks inside though that will close. I very much doubt the aisle that has a few shelves of toys, Yankee candles, magezines and all the Xmas chocolate etc will be closed off. We shall see though.

Yeah, right
frozendaisy · 23/10/2020 10:03

Hardware can be essential though if something happens with the plumbing, plus if you tell people to stay home it's easier and better for people's mental health to have something to do.

MJMG2015 · 23/10/2020 10:08

@Lockdownfatigue

Well, not for the next two weeks when you're meant to be staying home 🤣

Probably more essential than ever while all we can do it s go out for walks!

Oh you're allowed out for walks?

I only heard that the Kids are back in week 2 late yesterday.

Do you think they quite understand the whole 'lockdown' concept? Oops sorry 'Firebreak' it doesn't mean drizzle fuel along it FFS

Need to bash some heads together.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 10:55

It is going to make quite a lot of people angry. I am... I may not need a pair of trousers or trainers on the 14 days, but what about if I manage to breal the ones I have? I felt better knowing we could buy items like this in an emergency. Some places have work boots, high vis and so, that you may need. Kitchen ware if anything breaks.
This is going too far. It is making me feel more vulnerable during these 14 days than before. The only way of getting some things will be online. That surely does not help the high street in any way?

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 10:56

Yes, all years up to yer 8 are going back to school on the second week. I still do not fully get why up to year 8?

Janevaljane · 23/10/2020 10:57

@Hotcuppatea

I can't believe that Welsh people are putting.up with this shit to be honest.
Nor can I.
CeeJay81 · 23/10/2020 11:12

Because we believe in suppressing the virus and making sure hospitals aren't overwhelmed. Its only 2 weeks, so we'll survive lol.

bloodywhitecat · 23/10/2020 11:16

@AntiHop

It's only for 17 days. I'm sure people can survive without supermarket clothing for that time.
As a foster carer who takes emergency placements often with only an hour or two's notice not being able to buy clothes for that child could cause problems. These children often come to us unsuitably dressed in nothing more than they stand up supermarket clothing can be a godsend.
WankPuffins · 23/10/2020 11:18

@bloodywhitecat Dh works with social workers who have said exactly the same thing to him. They/the foster carers often need to be able to buy clothes or baby supplies at a 24 hour supermarket. It was their concern with the 24 hour places closing overnight too.

RaspberryCoulis · 23/10/2020 11:21

It's only for 17 days - yeah, that's what Nicola Sturgeon told us in Scotland. Quick 16 day shut down of hospitality. That's now been extended to 3 weeks. Then as of 2 Nov, we're going to get her all-singing, all-dancing five alert levels whereby that 3 weeks may well extend for another 3 weeks, or 3 months, or until the public stand up en masse and say no more.

Jrobhatch29 · 23/10/2020 11:21

Do people actually believe this dribble?

Peoples jobs and lives down the pan but hey as long as we get a nice Xmas...

MaxNormal · 23/10/2020 11:23

It's only for 17 days, if people listen and stay at home we'll have a nicer Christmas.

You believe that? Grin

WankPuffins · 23/10/2020 11:26

Peoples jobs and lives down the pan but hey as long as we get a nice Xmas...

Priorities, innit.

I’d rather people who work in hospitality don’t loose their jobs.

unmarkedbythat · 23/10/2020 11:28

How will it help local businesses if people just get used to buying online instead?

hamstersarse · 23/10/2020 11:28

It really is astounding that the Welsh are going to put up with this.

It is illogical.

It is power-crazed

It will achieve nothing other than to devastate business and economy

I have never had this thought before in my life about the 'Union' but I am starting to get really pissed that Scotland and Wales are implementing all these ridiculous restrictions and expecting England to pay for it all

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 11:32

100% agree hamster.

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 11:38

The biggest lie in this whole thing is......”the more everybody obeys the rules, the quicker we’ll be out of it”.

As long as there’s people believing that, we are bollocksed.

Imagine they got what they wanted. We have the strictest lockdown ever. Close all shops, including essential shops. Nobody leaves their homes at all. 100% compliance.

Do some people really believe that this is going to control the virus?

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 11:41

This one is crazy! There are so many situations where you can find yourself needing clothing or similar that very same day! It makes no sense whatsoever. And they only have announced it yesterday..... no time to prepare for anything.
This will not work on their favour or the high street favour....

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 23/10/2020 11:48

It's not law it's only what the daft Drakeford thinks should be happening.
Nothing will happen you'll still be able to buy your socks, kettle, printer paper regardless in the supermarket aisles.
Though any concessions will be closed.
