We didn't have that in the "first wave". Despite some confusion, it was perfectly OK for essential shops to also sell non-essentials, and for customers to purchase them on the same visit as doing essential shopping. Now, in Wales, it's not OK, the stated reason being "fairness" to small businesses.

I think this could be a first sign of things to come. I fully expect measures at least as strict as, and possibly stricter than, what we saw in March. And I expect local to become regional to become national. Because anything less just isn't keeping Covid-19 under control.

Autumnleavestime · 23/10/2020 16:10

What kind of murdering granny killing bastard would want to buy a duvet, kettle or a candle during a GLOBAL pandemic.

People are dying you know.

toxtethOgradyUSA · 23/10/2020 16:11

I'm sorry but Drakeford is yesterday's man. Sturgeon has completely trumped him with her FIVE TIERS. Plus she has a ZERO tier Grin. Absolutely nobody saw that coming Shock

Janevaljane · 23/10/2020 16:11

Sturgeons goes up to 11.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 16:15

@dingit

Not welsh, but a few months into the national lock down, I asked our local Tesco if any of the staff had had the virus. Not one. Who are working there many hours a day as opposed to customers who pop in for say an average 30 mins, and pass people fleetingly. I just don't get the logic. In fact I don't get any of it.
I have a friend who said this a couple of weeks ago about a large store she works at. She was all 'yeah no ones got it here. We've had hundreds of people in here and no ones had it'. And her general attitude was very lax.

Fast forward to last night when I bumped into her. Lets just say her tune has changed a bit. Apparently people off all over the place who haven't had any obvious contact with each other. The mood at work is apparently rather different and she was distancing a lot more than she ever has done previously (much to my annoyance and a couple of friends who had been avoiding her for this exact reason).

It might not be that its been spread in the store, but somethings changed and somethings happened.

So I'm slightly more open minded about the possibility of outbreaks centring around shops. However I'm inclined to think its only really an issue when you have a very high number of cases in the local area before it becomes an issue.

I thought Sturgeon was going for gold in the misery Olympics, but Drakeford has pipped her at the post.

Someone posted a while ago there is a very "Presbyterian" ethos to all of this. Nothing frivolous, nothing fun. Being miserable is a sign of strong character, goodness and piety. People having fun is intrinsically bad, they should be out working, and being serious, and trying to better themselves.

Who is Drakeford to tell the people of Wales that they can't buy a new duvet cover or candle in Tesco? If they are in Tesco anyway, forbidding them from picking up a Yankee fucking candle with their bread and milk is just madness. All that's going to happen is that Amazon is going to see a huge upswing in sales in Wales.

Fucking NUTS.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 16:17

Can we have sub-tiers? I am not sure we are complicating this enough? Surely we can up it a notch. In top tier, top sub-tier, you cannot put the clothes to dry outside

We went from 'stay the fuck home', to 'wear a fucking mask' and now we have 'stay the fuck home and shiver'.

I think tier zero still has some restrictions so surely we actually do need some minus tiers.
RishiMcRichface · 23/10/2020 16:20

Who will be first with an ID card to show the police if they catch you outside?

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 16:25

Yes, minus tiers sounds reasonable.
So you can buy duvets covers, but only plain colour. Candles, but only plain unscented. Clothes, but only plain colour, long skirts, long sleeves and modest enough

RaspberryCoulis · 23/10/2020 16:26

The scary thing is that some people think this pair are doing a great job. I volunteer with two people who think Nicola is doing an amazing job, "keeping us safe". These are however retired, comfortably well off people without school aged children/grandchildren.

Oh and Nicola's next move is going to be compulsory masks EVERYWHERE. In your house. On the street. Half way up Ben Nevis. In the shower. And only the SNP-accredited, tartan ones will be allowed.

TwentyViginti · 23/10/2020 16:26

@PetitFours

I'm actually thinking of buying some new underpants. Does anyone know who I need to contact for a list of government approved underpant retailers?

justasking111 · 23/10/2020 16:33

Asda Llangefni just posted on fb. sorry no halloween stuff or fireworks allowed to be sold now Sad

SorrelBlackbeak · 23/10/2020 16:34

Hopefully this has worked - private eye published a summary of the three tiers. Maybe it will give some ideas on how restrictions should be stepped up in tier 7+.

YardleyX · 23/10/2020 16:35

So all that Halloween stock that’s already there in the shop, going to waste now?

Destroying the economy without any benefit to helping the virus situation.

myrtilles · 23/10/2020 16:35

Oh well at least Waitrose won't need to cover up non food shelves it can just mark everything as "essential Waitrose"!

JamSarnie · 23/10/2020 16:36

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 16:44

I’m also surprised that there still seems to be support for draconian measures and lockdowns too. The you gov polls seem to suggest people agree with more lockdowns and government snooping in your baskets and telling on your neighbours. Yet many of the stats shown in daily briefings tell us half a picture and seem designed to scare the public.
I mean what’s next. Why even allow people out at all. Make everyone stay in and a Mark Drakeford approved box of supplies will be dropped on your door step?

Working for a broadcaster or newspaper makes you a key worker.

So you are a key worker if you are contracted to eat spiders and be covered in rats as long as its on tv or radio or you are doing an investigation into said matters.
