Will it be a circuit breaker announcement?

OP posts:
@MJMG2015

The problem is what is the definition of Tier 3? Where I live 216 per 100000 cases, Tier 3. Nearby Leeds over 356 per 100000 Tier 2. What help are Tier 3 getting etc? When will we be able to come out of tier 3? Etc etc etc
And some counties in Wales are at 38 per 100,000 but in lockdown for two weeks. It all makes perfect sense doesn't it...!

cologne4711 · 20/10/2020 15:07

@PetitFours

I think they're postponing Christmas until April, and combining it with Easter to create Chreaster. Or Eastmas.
I wish MN had a "like" button :)
toxtethOgradyUSA · 20/10/2020 15:08

He will wheel the doom mongers out to further soften us up for a circuit breaker across the North.

cologne4711 · 20/10/2020 15:13

That is even more ridiculous than I thought. We have about 54 and are tier one in England. What is wrong with Mark Drakeford?

Drakeford is on an ego trip. Just like Sturgeon. Neither should be anywhere near high office.
MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2020 15:18

@AgnesNaismith

I heard a new phrase being bandied around earlier - something like ‘firebreak’
That’s used in Wales I think

Agree these new terms are ridiculous.

There’s no short, sharp shock that scares the virus away anymore than greater restrictions did in March. It’s boringly long, arduous and takes ages to reduce numbers. If they say short lockdown to slightly change numbers people might not want it so much.

Probably to waffle he's glad Andy Burnham is putting party politics aside and welcoming the fact Manchester is going into teir 3 and people on minimum wage will now be living on £6.50 an hour instead.
And he will make it sound like he understands how hard it is.

Maybe he'll throw in a bit of brexit and sovereignty too, just to really rub it in?!?

Why are people perpetuating these figures?

Rishi has already said that the decrease in income will mean the employee can claim more benefits. Ultimately they will get the equivalent of 90% of their pay. Is that really so bad?

If you're in debt, relying on foodbanks to feed yourself & the family, barely managing to pay the rent each month, & have to choose between heating the house over the winter or buying school uniform for your children each year, & fall into one of the gaps which means you're unable to claim benefits, it is quite bad, yes.

Do you not read the MN threads every autumn & winter with links to cheap recipes & tips on how to feed your family of 4 for a day for about £1.50, how to keep warm without putting the heating on, how to manage getting clothes dry with no tumble dryer & no working radiators?

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 20/10/2020 15:20

Sorry that was for @hawaypet

He's following the science apparently. The science I can see is that Wales is already behind the rest of the UK economically and educationally.

My only hope is that he's implementing the two weeks and then letting us do whatever the fuck we want after. Because I'm fairly certain we all will be anyway. We're not even allowed to see anyone outside under the "firebreak".

ssd · 20/10/2020 15:22

Also, benefits take weeks to kick in.

Lovemusic33 · 20/10/2020 15:23

Fro what I understand, it will be to move Manchester into tier 3 and hopefully to say there will be financial support for those businesses that have to close.

I don’t think he will announce a circuit breaker.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 15:23

Wales has less hospital beds than anywhere else.

Some counties in Wales don't have a major hospital..

Orangeblossom7777 · 20/10/2020 15:34

I really hope it is not a 2 week lockdown. It worries me as I saw something about Hancock having a meeting about that and now it is saying he is giving an announcement. Fingers crossed it isn't that.

unmarkedbythat · 20/10/2020 15:35

It will be peevish muttering about something that alas is not his fault

West Wales figures still don't justify a lockdown. It's justified for us in the valleys but I would be pretty pissed off if I was on a farm in Pembs and I couldn't see anyone.
Jenasaurus · 20/10/2020 15:38

To the poster that suggested postponing Christmas to Easter, that would give me a bit longer to save for it, so I would love that, not feeling Christmas this year.

Maybe the announcement today is Boris resignation

userxx · 20/10/2020 15:39

It's a fucking joke. We've been in local restrictions for 3 months already, I really hope they donr leave us like this again for another 3 months. Depressing as hell.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 15:41

Burnham conference at 4pm.

Worth pointing out that G Manchester Tories are not happy about any of this either.

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 15:44

If you think the existence of the badly administered shitshow that is UC means it's NBD for people on minimum wage who qualify to potentially 'only' lose 10% of their income, you evidently don't know much about UC.

Surely he wants to stop the influx of holidaymakers over half term bringing covid with them?
assholesandelbows · 20/10/2020 15:48

Andy Burnham should be thoroughly ashamed of himself. All this dithering for 10 days will have cost people their lives, we need to get this virus under control. Then again Boris should have shown some gumption and ordered this lockdown ages ago.

Another shameful debacle in this whole fucking shitshow, I despair I really do. Hmm

Nothing to say about all the other local politicians who formed a bipartisan consensus of GM elected leaders against the government's approach, then?

Johnson could have shown gumption by recognising that people not financially supported during a lockdown will suffer and probably break lockdown. People supporting the government's refusal to ensure that lockdown does not ruin people should be very ashamed of themselves indeed.
