Anyone still not heard of anyone getting covid?

I live in an area of high infections but I haven't heard of anyone getting the virus. I have spoken to people with many more contacts than me a woman who works in a local shop, a sandwich shop worker and a bar worker. Nobody knows anyone who has had covid. I asked family on the phone who live outside my local area each with different points of contact through work or other portals and nothing!

I am not a conspiricy theorist or anti regulation but this just seems a bit odd to me. I can only assume that the virus is spreading in very limited locations as opposed to over a whole region at least in my part of the UK.

I don’t know anyone.

Live in the Midlands, but moved from London as it was kicking off. I was working on a dementia ward in a large care home when I left - all staff and residents there have been fine throughout (apart from the residents who have sadly died from other causes, which is expected).

No family members, aquintances. One child at school, another at college, SIL a school teacher - no cases.

I knew a few people who seemed to have it back in March/April (and DH and I had symptoms consistent with it in Feb) but I've not known anyone at any point who's had a confirmed case. TBF, my area has extremely low levels of it.

floralheadband · 19/10/2020 12:10

@WankPuffins it is a bit odd isn't it? You would have thought we'd hear of at least one person who'd tested positive by now.

I will say though that I’m certain I had it back in December, as did a lot of my colleges. All around the Heathrow area and working bank shifts at what was the hospital hotspot in London. Many residents of the care home and patients at the hospitals I worked bank at died of what was put down as pneumonia or pluerisy - I was put down as pneumonia/pluerisy as they just didn’t know what it was and why a healthy 39 year old would be so ill. I was ill for months and I’ve never had a cough like it.

sunshineandshowers21 · 19/10/2020 12:12

i knew of no one until last week. then my best friend caught it, and my grandad caught it in hospital. now there’s a few members of our family showing symptoms, including me. currently waiting for covid tests to be delivered.

HoneyBee03 · 19/10/2020 12:12

I don't know anyone, my friends and family don't know anyone who's had it either. I'm in the south west where we've had a low number of cases.

*excuse spelling and typos, trapped under a feeding baby!

Danglingmod · 19/10/2020 12:13

I live in a low rate area (ish) and know loads of people who have had it.

I don't think it's suspicious. It's just one of those things like all your friends birthdays being in March. It doesn't mean other people's friends don't have April birthdays.

MilkLady02 · 19/10/2020 12:14

I’m no mathematician, and I could be completely incorrect on this, but even high risk areas have pretty low numbers. (I realise potential for exponential spread etc)
So if an area has 600 cases per 100,000 that would be considered very high, but it’s only 0.6% of that population. So you’d have to meet/know/test 1666.6 people before finding a positive case.
Please feel free to tear the above to shreds if incorrect, maths is not my strong point and I keep thinking I must be missing something! Grin

Tyrannynormus · 19/10/2020 12:15

I'm in a pretty high case area, not heard of anyone actually having a confirmed case. I these a lot of 'someone up on x street has it's but no one actually ever seems to be able to name a specific person they have a real life, in person connection with.
I go to a university which has confirmed cases, but as yet havnt come across anyone there either.
I've always left my details for test and trace if I've been anywhere which requires it and I've never been contacted through that either.
I'm still only making essential trips out, though if I go to the supermarket I may then have a coffee in their cafe whilst I'm there, and I'm still very much minimising how much I see family but it does make me wonder whether it's worth it.

MarshaBradyo · 19/10/2020 12:17

I know lots who had a test but it was a negative
And also some that may have had it before testing began

BillyAndTheSillies · 19/10/2020 12:17

Not the first time around, although I've had friends who tested positive for antibodies but were never ill.

Although in the past two weeks we have lost two elderly neighbours. Both went in to hospital for non covid related things, contracted it in hospital and passed away. They were in their late 80's.

Shieldingending · 19/10/2020 12:18

Just to say the opposite, I’m a teacher in a small school and now know of 12 staff / pupils in our setting alone. 2 cases are probably linked (child to teacher transmission) but the rest are isolated cases reflecting what is going on in our community. As someone who was shielding during lockdown I feel terrified each day

BrightSunshineDay · 19/10/2020 12:18

Up until a few weeks ago, no. In the last month 5 people I know all tested positive, all recovered fine thankfully. Youngest was 27, oldest 62. The 62 year old had the mildest symptoms.

BlindAssassin1 · 19/10/2020 12:19

Out of about two hundred people at my work only 2 I think have had it. We work with the public all day long, and am in a low level area, so I wonder if this is representative of the larger community I live in.

However, I wonder too how many people are getting tested and keeping the info to themselves through fear of being ostricised even when they are fit, well and have isolated correctly.

SmilingAloe · 19/10/2020 12:20

I’m in a high risk area and yes, I know a few people who have it. A friend who is a nurse has it as do several of her colleagues. A local vet practice has had to shut because most of the staff have it. The year 6 of a local comp is currently shut because of several cases.

Tigger03 · 19/10/2020 12:21

Back in March knew a couple of people
Who thought they had it but weren’t tested (although grandfather in law died from it and that was confirmed).

This time 3 close friends with positive tests (independently from each other) but I’m in the NW so a high risk area.

I can completely see how people might know no one though, depends where you live as I think the outbreaks are localised.

Danglingmod · 19/10/2020 12:22

0.6% is more than 1/200.

40PlusTTC · 19/10/2020 12:22

Two colleagues died from it in April. Healthy and at work one week, dead the next. Those are the only two confirmed diagnosis I know of but I currently have a fever and am awaiting a test so maybe that will change.

Toebarb · 19/10/2020 12:23

I didn't know anyone until a few days ago.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 19/10/2020 12:25

I know 2 people with unconfirmed cases (back in Feb/March)
I know of 1 person with a confirmed test now - son of my parents friends so not a close link. He's doing well as far as I know.

I live in a Tier 2 area with very high numbers but I Think it's mostly spreading amongst the student population.

I can only hope that I continue not to know anyone close to me who does get it.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2020 12:29

I know of 5 people who have had it.

An acquaintance/FB friend
DH's colleague
Mum's cousin
Friend's mum
Child in friend's child's nursery.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2020 12:30

Oh and another friend... I thought I had forgotten someone.
