Anyone still not heard of anyone getting covid?

I live in an area of high infections but I haven't heard of anyone getting the virus. I have spoken to people with many more contacts than me a woman who works in a local shop, a sandwich shop worker and a bar worker. Nobody knows anyone who has had covid. I asked family on the phone who live outside my local area each with different points of contact through work or other portals and nothing!

I am not a conspiricy theorist or anti regulation but this just seems a bit odd to me. I can only assume that the virus is spreading in very limited locations as opposed to over a whole region at least in my part of the UK.

A friend was saying she didn't know anyone that had been infected and it's all a big con. I pointed out her grandchild's teacher had it - it was all over their facebook and she'd commented on it - so why say it doesn't exist?

OneForMeToo · 19/10/2020 13:46

Oh and I’m not saying it doesn’t exist just that I haven’t personally known of any cases.

loveislouderthanwar · 19/10/2020 13:49

I live in the midlands and my best friend has just tested positive. She has no symptoms and feels well.

It's strange.

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2020 13:51

I know three people that have died from covid. :(

MrsMeg1 · 19/10/2020 13:54

I was like this all through summer but in the last couple of weeks my neighbours have got it as have other friends and their children. Another friend has also lost her father. Hearing of cases daily in school.
We are in Yorkshire.

10storeylovesong · 19/10/2020 14:12

Tier 3 area and know at least 30 - 40 people who have tested positive, probably more if I sit and properly count. Most of those through my line of work, which is very public facing and quite high risk. I'm seeing more and more through private life currently. One at work was hospitalised and only just pulled through, still very ill. One never went to hospital but suffering long covid. Everyone else seems to be fine.

Interestingly, DH and I have worked front line throughout, one child at school and one at nursery. Although we've followed guidelines we've definitely made the most of any freedom we can get, including breaks away, multiple days out, lots of meals out, visits to the pub. Apart from a slight cough in April which I tested negative for, none of us have shown the slightest symptoms or had to isolate and haven't even yet had our annual change of the season colds.

Aragog · 19/10/2020 14:12

Until a fortnight ago I knew no one directly who had had Covid, except my nana who caught it in hospital in May. Knew of some indirectly - friends of friends, parents of children at my school, etc.

A fortnight ago one teacher at my school tested positive,
In the last week 6 more staff have tested positive, including myself.

Meadow1203 · 19/10/2020 14:14

I do not know anyone who has it.

Aragog · 19/10/2020 14:20

Plus it depends what' meant by 'getting covid'
Does it mean just testing positive?

I thought it had been shown that there wasn't actually a high number of false positives actually.

FWIW the staff at my school who have tested positive have all had symptoms, at the very least a cough. None are seriously ill fortunately but all have at least 1 or 2 known symptom.

I was in hospital only a few days ago where I tested positive with dangerously high blood pressure arising from Covid. It's about 11 days since my symptoms started (not one of big 3 at that point) and I am still breathless on moving, chest is still very tight and my heart is still missing beats and fast, coughing started later on and after positive result and is still here, blood pressure is stabilised with medication.

So, yes, 'caught Covid' with a positive test and symptoms. Unlikely to be false positives in all these cases.

VanGoghsDog · 19/10/2020 14:28

@Boredsilly

I don't know anyone who's has it, we live in Bedfordshire
I live in Bedfordshire, I know five people who have had it, two of whom were tested. But none of those five live in Bedfordshire. One actually lives in Austria and France.

Then I know of others, like work colleagues I've not met, so would not say I "know" them, but I am aware they have had positive tests.

Sweetchillijam · 19/10/2020 14:29

I live in a tier 1 area. My dad tested positive and died in hospital with it. An elderly neighbour died in a nursing home with it. My manager and her DH tested positive for it, a nurse round the corner tested positive for it, I know of several of DD’s school friends and or parents who have tested positive for it. Another man I know has long Covid he used to be really fit but isn’t anymore and its really taken its toll on him several months on and my best friend and several members of her family and extended family have it at the moment. Most of them didn’t have it bad but her mum, her eldest son and her partner have had it quite bad.

You are very lucky to be untouched by this OP and others.

NanFlanders · 19/10/2020 14:51

My son and friend had distinctive symptoms back in March before testing was widely available, my dad (in care home) had a positive test. My line manager - really laid him low for weeks. My friend's line manager - left with permanent lung damage.

Jakobabear · 19/10/2020 14:56

I live in an area in Wales that's been under local lockdown for weeks due to high numbers and don't know anyone that's had it.

movingonup20 · 19/10/2020 15:23

We got mild cases in March, my brother had suspected case in feb (London) lots of friends have had positive tests but only in has actually been ill, as in you would stay off work even in non covid times level of illness. If you haven't met anyone it's likely someone was asymptomatic

RossiRoo · 19/10/2020 15:30

It's only in the last 3 weeks that I've heard about people I know that have tested positive for covid.

Interestingly - majority of them have had to lie and say they have symptoms, to get a covid test.

I think test and trace system is massively flawed, in that you do have to lie about having symptoms to get a test, therefore the scientists or government or whoever have no absolutely idea of the true percentage of the population that have it and are walking around spreading it, but are asymptomatic.

motheroftwoboys · 19/10/2020 15:33

I live in the North East and work in a school where (I think) 5 staff and about 12 students have tested positive. Luckily we have very robust social distancing measures in place in school and (touch wood) and further to isolation no one has yet passed it on. Two good friends have had it and now have long covid and also my son and his girlfriend (who live in Manchester) had it at the beginning of the pandemic. They recovered fine.

Notcoolmum · 19/10/2020 15:35

I know 6 positive cases.

Anordinarymum · 19/10/2020 15:37

I'm in Yorkshire. Don't know of anyone who has it or tested positive for it. I also have not heard a thing about it apart from what I hear on the news.

JanewaysBun · 19/10/2020 15:39

I know
1 x young person almost died
1 x young person has long covid
FIL has antibodies so assume he had it when he had a bad cold in March

joystir59 · 19/10/2020 15:41

4 members of my extended family have had it. I know of others who have had it included several deaths.

thenightsky · 19/10/2020 15:45

I know one person who caught it skiing in Northern Italy in early March. She said it wasn't as bad as the laryngitis she'd had the year before and managed to work from home taking paracetamol to control the temperature.

DD has two friends who came down with it last week and they are both fine and working from home, taking paracetamol for the temperatures. Coughing at night is making them a bit tired though.

irregularegular · 19/10/2020 15:46

I know plenty. In our village I am friends with 8 families that I can think of off the top of my head where at least one member of the family clearly had it and others probably did. None went to hospital, but most adults were properly ill. Serious flu level ill.

My BIL and SIL (but they live in a different country). He was also properly ill but not in hospital.

10+ of my students, children's friends, friend's children (all student/young adult age) have tested positive. None particularly ill.

And many more that I know of but don't personally know: teachers, kids at son's school, friends of friends etc

Not in a high risk area. Rural SE village. Higher risk city (University city) but still in tier 1.

DameFanny · 19/10/2020 15:46

2 people in our small block of flats tested positive today (per WhatsApp group, separate flats). 1 symptomatic, the other picked up through work screening.

The guy I dated immediately before I met DH died of it in May.

Two friends had it in April

My adult nephew and his housemates had it in August/September

We're in a very low incidence area, though it started rising quickly when the university came back. Most of the cases I know involve someone travelling and bringing it back.

Outside our area, wider family has lost people.

Devlesko · 19/10/2020 15:48

I've heard of people having it, haven't met anyone who has.
Greater Manc, too. Load of bollocks, and far too much propaganda ito cases, deaths.

Thebearsbunny · 19/10/2020 15:49

Up until a week ago I didn’t know anyone (apart from 1 person back in March). Now know of 8, including 2 family members. Live in West Yorkshire. It seems to be ripping through our area.
