Anyone still not heard of anyone getting covid?

I live in an area of high infections but I haven't heard of anyone getting the virus. I have spoken to people with many more contacts than me a woman who works in a local shop, a sandwich shop worker and a bar worker. Nobody knows anyone who has had covid. I asked family on the phone who live outside my local area each with different points of contact through work or other portals and nothing!

I am not a conspiricy theorist or anti regulation but this just seems a bit odd to me. I can only assume that the virus is spreading in very limited locations as opposed to over a whole region at least in my part of the UK.

I know of loads who have had it. Six colleagues tested positive so far (and then their families all got it), some friends have lost elderly relatives to it, my friends elderly mother had it but is absolutely fine now, one of my DCs school principals had it (his wife is a nurse). Thankfully one one case so far in the 3 schools my dc attend and none at their extracurricular activities.

I am a midwife and cannot believe how many positive cases we are now getting in work, thankfully no poor outcomes though.

RunBackwards · 19/10/2020 19:49

Despite the fact that it's what "everyone" is talking about, I think people are keeping quiet about it.

For example, I know two people who work in the NHS and who had it early on, both have active social media nut neither mentioned it on there. I also have a colleague who's FIL died with Covid and very few people at work know that, she wanted it kept quiet because she didn't want people to be frightened of her.

It's not news people are sharing widely.

CosyAcorn · 19/10/2020 19:53

Im in Lancashire and know nine people who have had it, three of which have died, one is in hospital now. Two of the people who died were elderly with serious health problems. One was an active and healthy 60 year old.

Straysocks · 19/10/2020 20:00

I have it and so do my children. None of us have typical symptoms.

Bailey0703 · 19/10/2020 20:07

Thank you DameFanny despite an improvement this morning she is struggling. I just don't understand (but I do because it's a fucking VIRUS that can be picked up on a door handle followed by a nose scratch ! ) .. she literally cycles to the local shop in a LOW spread area.. and doesn't take ANY medication... we FaceTime daily despite 20 miles away as she was so careful not to risk my health or others.. my step dad is besides himself . He will come to stay with me once 14 days have passed. Brothers are leaving him food on doorstep.

torquewench · 19/10/2020 20:08

Nope, I dont know anyone, my parents dont know anyone, 3 of my friends (one of whom is a paramedic in a high risk area) and colleagues dont know anyone who's had it.

One of my other friends is a senior school teacher. There has been only one diagnosed case in her class, he was asymptomatic and none of his family have had it or tested positive nor any of his classmates.

DameFanny · 19/10/2020 20:26

Awful for you all @Bailey0703 Flowers

Bailey0703 · 19/10/2020 21:06

What I just can't understand is how ANYONE is not just doing all they can not to get this thing.

Do you REALLY need to go out to the pub ? See your mates ?

Not because they probably won't die.. but because their mother, grandparents, neighbour might die or be very very ill for sometime. ? That there loved one might need a hospital bed (for ANY reason)

Do they just not 'get' that now is THE most dangerous time of year. ? The first wave was Spring into summer when general illness is always lower.. and now we are in autumn going in to WINTER.. where hospitals are always at capacity ?

Can you imagine the scenario where a child accidentally swallows a peanut and goes into anaphylactic shock but there are NO staff at the hospital able to deal with it because someone is dying of Covid ? (Or rather they have to make a choice between your child and his/her aunt on Covid support ? )

That is what is coming unless people stop thinking purely about their 'needs' ...

Aragog · 19/10/2020 21:15

What I just can't understand is how ANYONE is not just doing all they can not to get this thing.

The most likely place I picked it up was work - an infant school. Its the only place I have had close contact with anyone.

On the odd time I have been to the pub for a meal I have been super careful. I'm clinically vulnerable so being careful has been important to me throughout. On this occasion I hadn't been to a pub or restaurant in the time period beforehand so it didn't come from one.

barbites · 19/10/2020 22:25

South west, don't know anyone or anyone that knows anyone that's had it...

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/10/2020 21:21

We tested positive on Tuesday. I have absolutely no effing idea where I got it because we've been ridiculously cautious throughout the whole of 2020. I don't know anyone currently with it or who has recently had it so can only assume there is a lot more asymptomatic community transmission going on in schools than we realise.

JammyGem · 24/10/2020 21:30

I didnt know anyone until end of September. Then in the space of 2 weeks, 7 people I know had positive results. They didn't all know each other either, and live in different areas.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 24/10/2020 21:32

Yes I know 3 people in last 2 weeks who have tested positive

1 child
2 adults

All in school setting, tier 2 area.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 24/10/2020 21:34

I know a few who have had it. Plus 19 confirmed cases in the (admittedly very large) secondary school where I work since we started back in September. We are a high risk area though and cases are even higher locally now students are back.

Ontopofthesunset · 24/10/2020 21:34

I know loads of people who had it in March/April, six in my extended family, loads of friends. We weren't all tested then but enough people have had antibody tests since for us to know we all had it, if that makes sense. This time around all the people I know who've had it are students - a couple in Cambridge, one (and all her housemates) in Oxford, one (and all his housemates) in Manchester, one and a couple of her flatmates in Exeter, one and his housemates in Liverpool, one in Nottingham. They all live locally to me and several of them are probably the 'wrongly allocated' student postcodes.

orangeicecream · 24/10/2020 21:36

I am a teacher at a school of 400 pupils and around 50 staff.... Noone has had covid. My children go to different schools with 500+ pupils each (secondary)....one case at one of the schools. Don't know anyone socially either. We must be very lucky so far....long may our luck continue.

Pipandmum · 24/10/2020 21:48

I suspect a couple of friends had it (cruise to Bahamas, came bsck with constant cough, loss of smell and exhaustion). Another just after Christmas, husband travelled alot, same symptoms. But neither were tested. So no one officially.

blueangel19 · 24/10/2020 22:02

I still do not anybody who has had it for sure. However, I do not know a few people with shattered lives due to the pandemic.

InTheLongGrass · 24/10/2020 22:10

The bloke opposite died from it. The ambulance turned up around twice a day for a week. When they finally took him to hospital, it was too late and he died the next day.
Friend currently dealing with long covid.
Boy round the corner just finished his 10 days for positive test.
My 11 yr old is in isolation because his class mate tested positive.
2 bubbles at DS2s school burst, but I dont know the families personally.
Mum's shielding friend got it.

We had no restrictions til the tiers came in, and went into tier2.

yearinyearout · 24/10/2020 22:12

Up until last week I knew about 6 people who'd had it, this week another three people I know have got it. I'm only in a small town.

wowfudge · 24/10/2020 22:13

We're on the edge of Greater Manchester though not in it ourselves - we have family, friends and colleagues there. I know of one person there who has had it, a woman in her 40s. A friend in France and her son have had it. The son was asymptomatic. Friend had to take a week of work and do a phased return due to fatigue.

bringbacksideburns · 24/10/2020 22:18

Finding out more people have it as the weeks go by.

My friend's dad died of it early in lockdown.
Then a colleague got it.
Then a couple of acquaintances got it and one of the neighbours next door and one down the road.

A good friend has had it and is finding it very hard to shake it off - shes into her fourth week.

I don't think I can afford to be complacent and just hope if I do get it that's it a mild case.

ForeverBubblegum · 24/10/2020 22:28

I don't know anyone, but unless one of my acquaintances was very ill or died, would I know? There are loads of people that I know but might not see for weeks or even months, and when I do see them I don't get a rundown of every illness they've had (and for most, it's not that serious).

I had a bad cough back in April which could have been/ probably was covid (pre tests been available). This hasn't come up in conversation with 90% of people I know.

Fredchicken · 24/10/2020 22:30

I know of several Uni students who tested positive but who were all asymptomatic.

I don't know anyone else who tested positive.
