A positive test- my journey so far

I have really struggled to find a description of someone with CV19. So here is my story (so far). I received a positive test back this afternoon.

Friday. I went out to the pub with 3 family members from 2 households. This is significant as my adult DD who lives with me also has CV19 and this is the only time that she has left the house for 2 weeks and so it looks like that may be the transmission point. We are in a tier 1 area.

Tuesday. I wake up with a splitting headache. I am prone to sinus problems and I thought it was that. Take ibuprofen during the day which numbs but doesn't remove it. Have a really sore throat start during the day. My DD wakes up with what she describes as a cold.

Wednesday. Slight cough, mostly dry but some mucousy. Headache continues and throat is really sore. DD still has a 'cold' and a very very slight cough. I decide to order a test online- for home testing. We dont really feel ill- this is like a very mild cold.

Thursday. Feel a lot better. Throat hurts, headache continues and light coughing. Sneezing (so it must be a cold) . Regret ordering a test as we are fine. I dont think I have had a fever, had a few moment of feeling hot maybe. DD says she feels a bit hot. We dont have a thermometer to check.

Friday. I wake up with almost no smell. Still got a headache. Throat hurts (but really very mild sore throat). The post comes and no test arrives and so I book drive through test for me and DD. We have to do it ourselves in the car- I am very skeptical that I have managed to swab correctly.

Turns out the home tests had been delivered by amazon and left behind the bin!

Friday evening I feel really cold in bed (but I live in a cold house so not unusual). Still no smell back. Headache has gone

Saturday. Feel a bit tired in the morning. Sore throat has gone. Have a slight cough. Woke up with a bad headache that took hours to go. Saturday pm- feel fine- spend 3 house gardening.

Saturday evening. I receive a text/email with a positive result. 4 hours later my DD gets a positive test result.

Turns out another person who was in the pub with us also developed a 'cold' on Tuesday and is now booked for a test tomorrow. So all 3 people got symptoms on the same day. The 4th person says they may have had a cold last week ??? but they are fine now.

DD symptoms now are: slight irregular cough. Sore throat gone. Can still smell but a bit reduced. Sneezing from time to time. Odd taste in mouth.

My symptoms are now. Low level headache, slight cough, slightly tickly throat. Sneezing from time to time. No smell, reduced taste.

At this point this is like the very mildest of colds. Lets see what happens now.

48 hrs and still waiting. Hope it's not inconclusive. Just done 14 days isolation for dds positive result!
Can almost taste this morning, but not smell. And it feels like someones sat on my chest.
If its negative our 14 days isolation ends today and were back at work tomorrow. Just need to know really.

Forgetmenot157 · 25/10/2020 10:42
@Forgetmenot157 my first test came back as inconclusive, second one was positive.
I am wondering this. I read somewhere that if it was negative but had been voided in some way they can still give a negative result. However if there is covid present but it has been voided they can't give a positive and will need another test :(

Forgetmenot157 · 25/10/2020 10:43

Not sure how true that is tho.

Peridot1 · 25/10/2020 12:10

How are people booking tests if they don’t have the NHS listed symptoms?

I feel a bit odd but not sure if it could be Covid.

Have had what I though was a cold - lots of sneezing. Also my allergies have been worse than normal. Lots more sneezing. But that’s been going on for weeks.

This morning I have a funny pain/burning sensation on small area in my chest. Also feel a bit shaky. Not cold and shivery but just shaky.

I’m slightly asthmatic. Get hay fever. Breathing is ok.

No idea if this warrants a test.

We are supposed to be moving house this week!

Rowgtfc72 · 25/10/2020 12:21

Dd didnt have typical symptoms, just tired and headache but shed been sent home from school to self isolate as they had positive cases so it was a fair bet she had it.
Just ticked yes she has the main symptoms. Noone queried it. She tested positive.

PaperSmith · 25/10/2020 14:25

Hi I got a test as was feeling rough and asthmatic and was 8 days post contact with a child at work (Sen school).

I just said yes I had one of the three main symptoms in the tick box (I'd had a tight chest but felt it was normal asthma).

There were over 1000 appointments at the drive in available (another reason I felt it was ok to book a test) and I got the result 20 hours later, negative.

They don't ask you what symptoms you've got and you can do the test yourself or someone can do it for you.

Rowgtfc72 · 25/10/2020 14:42

Mines just come back as positive. Toying with testing dh as although hes symptonless we cant afford a third spell of isolation.

I hate to tell you but he has to isolate regardless as he could catch it from you after he tests negative... 14 days since your symptoms started... Sucks tho
Rowgtfc72 · 25/10/2020 17:04

Yeah were very very aware of thisSmile
At least if he gets a positive test with no symptoms were all done then. Were thinking he may be a super spreader!

fucknuckle · 25/10/2020 19:59

negative! i still feel like shit tho. time to attempt to get a GP appointment to talk about my crazy fatigue and permanent headache then.

Rowgtfc72 · 26/10/2020 05:39

@fucknuckle I'm 48 and took those symptoms to my doc last year. 3 day headaches, absolute crawling on the floor tiredness and all my joints kicked off ( have osteoarthritis in my knees , hip and collarbone)
Turns out I was low in b12 and perimenopausel. Taking a well woman supplement and the headaches have all but stopped and b12 jabs meant I can function again. Also I've practically cut out sugar. That one was an eye opener!

CovidClara · 26/10/2020 09:07

So day 14 today
Woke up feeling totally normal- just like Monday 2 weeks ago (the
day before symptoms)

Had an odd cough but that it is

Last night just before bed I had a 20 minute coughing fit from nowhere

Forgetmenot157 · 26/10/2020 09:39

So woke up today, cough seems to be getting worse again and having to take really deep breaths. I am asthmatic and am not sure if it's just my brain playing tricks on me while I wait for the second test results to come back :/

Frazzled2207 · 26/10/2020 10:06

It sounds like you’re on the mend. Your account has been really useful thanks for sharing. Are you out of isolation now or playing safe for another few days?
Hope the dog can somehow get a walk.

MissSmiley · 26/10/2020 10:39

@CovidClara that's reassuring I'm so glad you're feeling better

@funknuckle that's frustrating for you, I took two negative tests before my last one came back positive so keep an eye out for new symptoms

I'm day 5 today and feel absolutely exhausted and a bit breathless. I have just noticed my sense of smell has gone.

Also one of the twins now has a sore throat and a cough, there's only the twins who haven't tested positive so far, I'm in no fit state to drive anywhere so I've ordered a home test

SomethingM1ss1ng · 26/10/2020 19:13

@CovidClara glad to hear you are feeling better. This account has been most useful. Thank you for starting this.

Fingers crossed for everyone waiting for a test..

Fossie · 26/10/2020 23:03

Just adding my experience to the list. DD (19) was told someone she was away with had tested positive so she ordered a postal test. She then got worried about the time it would take to arrive so went through a drive thru test the next day. I used her postal test when it arrived. It was a bit stressful to complete and I thought that might be why I started a headache. Before that neither of us had any symptoms.

Early the next morning DD finds out she’s positive. She isolates for 10 days but never gets symptoms. I felt dizzy (walking into walls even) but I put that down to shock. We order postal tests for the rest of the family.

No one else feels unwell but my headache lasts for days. I start to find it hard to think straight (I’m having to wfh now). I feel weak and tired. I think I lose my taste for a few hours 4 days after DD’s test. I’ve been checking my oxygen levels since I bought an oximeter in March. After about a week my levels drop from their usual 96 to 98 levels down to 94/95. Later on 93 and once 92. Six weeks later I’m still at 94 at times.

The first test is unclear but I eventually get a positive test result. No one else the the family tests positive. I sometimes think I still have a funny taste. Tea tasted of Bovril even if I changed my mug one day (we don’t have Bovril in the house).

On day 10 the headache got too much for me and painkillers still weren’t doing anything so I gave up and spent the day in bed. Most of the time my throat felt a little sore but more like my glands were swollen. The following day I felt fine though a little washed out. I was well enough to go back to work 2 days later. It has been lovely not having a headache every day since so I think that was my main symptom.

ClarasZoo · 27/10/2020 10:09

Why did you test the whole family if they did not have symptoms? I thought you have to have symptoms or can you get a test if you have contact with a positive?

Forgetmenot157 · 27/10/2020 11:55

My test came back negative which was a bit of a surprise really. However I've just an a recent exposure notification form test and trace. Just waiting nervously now for an isolation message which if I get it will make me think I had a false negative!

ghostyslovesheets · 27/10/2020 13:41

Thanks for this thread - encouraged me to get my sore throat and mild croupy cough tested - I’m positive! With no fever or loss I’d smell or taste - cough is not chesty - just thought it was the cold I had last week (2 tests then both negative) returning - odd stuff but would have written off the sore throat if I hadn’t read this

CovidClara · 28/10/2020 17:38

Day 16 Occasional cough- very dry now. WFH all day and been very productive.

DD who has been almost symptom free was dizzy yesterday and had to go to bed. She has a light cough as well.

Thanks - oddly I feel ok - a bit tired and headachey but not too bad touch wood

Alexasettimer · 29/10/2020 20:53

Really interesting post. Hope you’re feeling better now @CovidClara

Early Feb Friday afternoon I had a sore throat, Saturday I felt run down.
Sunday had a temp of 38°

I went to hospital as I was pregnant at the time and concerned about my temperature.

Blood tests showed I had increases CRP levels.
They kept me in and gave me iv antibiotics.

Still don’t know what it was. But makes me wonder.

CovidClara · 07/11/2020 21:57

so to update

All 3 of us are now completely symptom free

I have caught a cold!
