@NRJ688 Hmm being as mine was alone and I couldn't even go out for a walk, no it wasn't what I made of it. Not so bad if you're with your family, have enough money and are able to go for walks etc

I'm school support staff...we've been told to expect to be in work even if a lockdown is announced.

@NRJ688 Quite difficult to make it special when you have 4 children ranging from age 4-12 to look after and two adults at home trying to work.

If it goes on beyond two weeks, I'll have to give up my work (self-employed so no one to hand over). Particularly given how much my DD with SEN struggled last time without the structure of school.

So that will also make for a lovely, carefree lockdown. Hmm

At least there's going to be some warning on this one. Going to spend next few days looking for loopholes to get out. These lockdowns are an utter and complete waste of time and I'm not sacrificing my mental health for this bullshit again.

@Pinkflipflop85

We've been given some extra ppa time in school next week to get online learning ready for the first week of November

Make of that what you will...

We have too ..... Although it was both for that and also in case of year group closures....

Maybe show a bit of empathy for people who have kids doing GCSE exams in November. Plus those who would be barred from seeing their closest relatives who don’t live nearby and those who would lose their jobs due to the economic effect of half terms and school holidays being cancelled for a whole year.

I hope so, I’d like to get my Ocado slot booked and delivered for my cottage, we had a lovely lockdown last April / May , lockdown is what you make of it

It's easy to have a nice lockdown if you live in a cottage and can afford to get an ocado shop in. Surely you're not that tone deaf to not realise it's much less fun if you're living in a one bedroom flat and you've been made redundant? What do you make of it then?

Not much else is the same as Wales so I doubt it, Boris is very keen on the tiered approach so maybe it might be in the very high risk areas. Bit late anyway as it surely would be this week and next to work for half term.

@NRJ688 yeah, if there's another lockdown with schools closed then I can't work and I will lose all my income, possibly my house too. Great that you had a lovely lockdown but the reality for many people is terrifying.

WhyareWehardofthinking · 18/10/2020 07:26

A circuit breaker will need to wait until after the GCSE results in the first week of Nov to be effective. I've got A level students either resitting in our school or returning to their old school, so it would be difficult to do u set any kind of lockdown.

And quite honestly, I already have a 2 week half term starting on the 23rd and only leave the house to go to work. If my plans for lovely long countryside walks and time to relax as a family are completely blow away by being in a lockdown I don't know how we will cope. We are looking forward to being able to do what most people are doing right now, and taking that away from us after this half term will tip some of the teachers at most Manchester and Bolton schools I know over the edge.

I think it’ll be further into November for England but yes it’s pretty inevitable if you look at how cases are rising. The vaccine hopes clearly aren’t where the Gov hoped and reinfection wasn’t something they had factored in nor Long Covid in such high numbers.

They have no choice but to suppress this. Lockdowns are the result of their failure to T&T but to be fair all Europe is in the same boat. It’s hard to contain this. I personally think mid November for England. I think they’ll put most of not all secondaries onto 2 weeks on:off over winter and Unis will be on line Jan onwards. Despite what people wanted it’s obvious education driving this they even said so in briefings by admitting so far they’ve prioritised education.

With regards to universities some courses have practical elements that can’t be done online.

In wales here and we are already having a 2 week half term as we went on at school a week longer before the summer break. We have also had info that National tests will be held when they go back at the beginning of November, so will be a pain if these are cancelled again.

The problem they have is that closing hospitality has the smallest effect on R and costs them a fortune.

They can model households meeting outside only till cows come home but the reality is most aren’t adhering, which will only get worse as the weather turns.

Some areas have been under restrictions for months now and the restrictions are not having enough of an effect.

They need to start reducing R by areas they have control over and education is the main area that they can control. They’ll hold off as long as they can but there simply isn’t anything else they can do which has enough of an impact or that people will voluntarily adhere to in big enough numbers.

You are an idiot If you don't realise not everyone has a cushy little life and can have a fab time in lockdown. Try having understanding there are other situations out there.

... I can't see England doing it. I know a few DC who have exam re sits straight afterhalfterm (as not everyone was blessed with a pass grade in August)
That would be truly throwing some of our -vulnerable and deprived kids under the bus!

Teachers coming on here and saying they are preparing isn't helpful really

So, you’d rather MM users who are teachers didn’t comment on this thread?

@astuz

As usual, everyone forgets about Leicestershire/Leicester (who haven't ever properly come out of lockdown). It's already half-term here, back on the 26th, so way too late to start thinking about an extended half-term. By the time the politicians have decided, we'll be back in school.

I'm a teacher and I am desperately hoping the schools stay open.

Exactly.

Good on Wales! England has run out of time to announce this both in terms of infection rates and holiday dates. All this talk of 2 week circuit breaker is pissing me off loads. If it was going to happen in England, it should be happening this week and next to account for holidays and be over for exams. As usual the government is a shit show.

Wow, I’ve had a lovely lockdown but I appreciate how lucky I am and I’d never ever be insensitive and stupid enough to make such a comment in public. Are you wearing blindfolds and not seeing the real world out there or you just don’t give a toss about other people?

@NRJ688 Speak of your 'lovely lockdown' to the family I was reading about the other day, who have 5 children in a damp one bed flat with no outside space. Or of an elderly (and terrified) couple I know who live in a remote house, have health conditions, and have barely left the premises since March. They have no family and don't understand the internet, so no Ocado delivery for them. But so glad you've got it all sorted.
I kind of hope you are a troll.
