It seems like it's on the cards but 🤷‍♀️

It will be really interesting to see if they ever “reopen” I would guess not unless it has a much quicker impact on infection rates than the March one but I guess it will be another “let’s extended again and again situation”.

Flowersinthewindowstill · 17/10/2020 21:48

I don't think it's altogether bad idea if it helps get things more under control. Having said that, I wish they'd give more notice as both businesses and individuals need a little time to prepare.

ThatDamnScientist · 17/10/2020 21:52

@CeeJay81

I'm glad we're doing this approach. The 3 tiers approach England is doing just seems so confusing and your getting places like Manchester refusing to go into tier they should be cause of the lack of financial support. Sage said a circuit breaker was needed, maybe England will follow suit... but who knows with this government.
Confusing doesn't even begin to cover the three tier. We have just moved into tier 3 (or we were supposed to today, the council have just changed it Monday, I only found out by chance!) , we can also now meet with others (when we move to tier 3) which wasn't supposed to be the case 🤷🏼‍♀️ we were told no mixing of households anywhere but today they have said well actually, if you go to a park or somewhere outdoors then you can mix with other households (not just your support bubble/grandparent babysitting bubble etc) as long as you follow the rule of six...I am so confused right now!

Legally schools have to be ready to offer a robust level of remote learning from 23rd October. Our senior teams have no inclination or insider knowledge regarding moving to remote learning.

The focus is on kids self isolating or staff self isolating.
However, it has been made clear that we need thorough and detailed work ready for plan b, 50% of cohort in school. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks remote. So the planning is there, we should be much more organised compared to March!

ChristmasCantComeSoonEnough · 17/10/2020 21:55

@noideaatallreally

yup - as I expected a two week shutdown for schools over half term. I suppose those MNers who very rudely told me I was talking rubbish when I posted about this a couple of weeks ago will be posting shortly .......
But some schools had their half term last week, some this coming week and some are the week after. Surely it’s too late to do it in line with half term?
Comefromaway · 17/10/2020 21:56

How will that work for dd’s friend who lives in Wales but commutes across the border to college every day. They broke up for half term yesterday and are due back on 26th Oct?

JacketPotatoQueen · 17/10/2020 22:03

Some areas are sitting 11+ exams in the first week of November as well, will be interesting to see what happens with them (and the impact on school applications if the exams don’t happen....)

Rosehip10 · 17/10/2020 22:13

I can't see Boris doing it for England - would look like he was following Starmer/SAGE/LG advice....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/10/2020 22:13

Surely it's too late to do it in line with half term? DS doesn't break up until next Thursday but a lot of schools finished yesterday for half term.

nosswith · 17/10/2020 22:13

No surprise but very unprofessional of those who leaked it. Leaking is something I expect from incompetent politicians not transport operators.

GabsAlot · 17/10/2020 22:14

i read schools wont close other than half term-but i tguess theyre still working out the details

i dont really call that a lockdown if kids are still mixing

CeeJay81 · 17/10/2020 22:22

gabsAlot I've heard various rumours about schools being open/closed, will see what is announced on Monday.

DBML · 17/10/2020 22:25

I loathe teaching from home. I absolutely loathe it. I worked longer hours and had far more parent emails to deal with. I had to make more phone calls home and just in case we weren’t all busy enough, SMT sent us extra stuff to do too. I would rather just go to school.

For those who think it’s an extended holiday, it’s not. It’s the bloody furthest thing from a holiday you could imagine.

I get why they are doing it and I will go along with it. But I also just can’t wait for Covid to bugger off and things to go back to normal.

thevassal · 17/10/2020 22:36

@GreenClock

Seems sensible
seems incredibly harsh to me, given that by next Friday people in local lockdown areas in Wales will have already been forbidden to do a huge number of things, include leave their local county (some of which like MT, or Torfaen are four miles wide at their widest) or see anyone they don't live with indoors, for up to nearly six weeks before this lockdown even starts, with negligible results.

My company have been WFH since March. I have colleagues who live alone, who, if they had followed the rules, wouldn't have seen a single friend or member of their family from 23 March to 9 July when the ridiculous 5 mile guidance finally finished in Wales.

Similarly now due to local lockdowns they won't have seen friends or family or hugged/touched a single other person from 8/17/21/etc September until - 9 November? Or, let's face it, probably much later.
These are youngish people who have a roughly 0.07 chance of dying from Covid if they did catch it. I'm pretty certain that the risk of suicide, ongoing depression, financial issues etc. from being in imposed isolation is higher than that.

Emmie12345 · 17/10/2020 22:45

So so glad not to live in Wales

ResplendentAutumn · 17/10/2020 22:45

Why the bloody secrecy?
Every day I'm in work, although I'm reasonably lucky with my set up, sometimes there are moments when I'm feeling stressed about covid.
I'm very lucky I can't imagine how other people feel in worse conditions!
The stress if they are worried must be unbearable?.and yet if they said, two 3 week lock down, one feels as though there is an end in sight and we can plod on until then?

Bring numbers down again a bit then stumble on for a bit until Xmas etc.

This not knowing is utterly reprehensible. And as I said I'm mostly thinking of teachers who work in far more densely places than I.
Short term 🔒 downs with some things open, gyms if they want too etc surely is the way forward. However I don't think children should be abandoned again? Teachers should certainly keep the dc ticking over.

WishIWasSomewhereElse · 17/10/2020 22:46

JacketPotatoQueen Exactly what I was thinking. Our whole county is purely selective, so no schools would be allocated, as every Y6 in the county (unless withdrawn), will be sitting the 11+ and we had details about them and the dates in the first week of November, sent only yesterday!

WishIWasSomewhereElse · 17/10/2020 22:46

@JacketPotatoQueen forgot to tag you in my last post.

Abracadabra12345 · 17/10/2020 22:46

I’m sure a 2-3 week lockdown will have a magical effect. Something special will happen in that time and when we reopen we will be so glad we did it. Cases will have plummeted and hospitals will have emptied. The hospitality sector will also be delighted.

I used to believe in Santa too.....

In the meant

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 17/10/2020 22:52

If they do this it needs to be done properly including shops. With managed times or days for going shopping

Otherwise people will just tit about hanging around Asda for something to do like they did last time........I'm not massively opposed to it. But if it isn't done properly it's a waste of everyone's time.

Bikingbear · 17/10/2020 22:52

@Pinkflipflop85

We've been given some extra ppa time in school next week to get online learning ready for the first week of November

Make of that what you will...

Where are you?

TBH I'd be very surprised if Scotland doesn't follow suit. They seem to be more cautious than anywhere else.

Theultimatecatlady · 17/10/2020 22:53

For a ‘circuit breaker’ to work and reduce the number of cases it has to be a minimum of 5 weeks. Apparently the first 5 weeks of lockdown only slowed the transmission and only in week 6 did the cases start to drop. Therefore I don’t think they’ll be a circuit breaker,it seems pretty pointless. People will
only go out and ‘celebrate’ more when the breaker period ends 😩

NotAKaren · 17/10/2020 22:54

My concern is that if schools shut and numbers do not improve (and I don't think they will in such a short time) they will not open schools again in 2/3 weeks and it will end up being months of horrid soulless online home learning like before.

Exactly. Do it properly (stay at home, no travel, no mingling, no play dates, no education, no non essential shopping, close everything down etc) for a 2 week short period or just don't bother as it'll just drag on half arsed for weeks with everyone getting even more pissed off than they are now!
