Does anyone avoid shops and shop online?

OP posts:
Squiffany · 16/10/2020 21:43

Yes, but I’ve hated shopping in person for years. It’s so tedious at the best of times.

MiniMum97 · 16/10/2020 21:54

Yes I only go to a shop if I really need to. So very occasional and brief supermarket shopping.

NeedWineNow · 16/10/2020 22:01

No. I use the local shops in our village, have been browsing in our local town and am off to an outlet centre not far from us tomorrow. Wearing a mask shopping doesn't bother me or DH and we still make a day of it, have lunch out.

I have discovered the delights of food shopping deliveries which I have embraced for me and my mum. I'll continue with that even when all this is over supplemented by out local butcher, baker and farm shops.

Cheesypea · 16/10/2020 22:06

I go to lidl and aldi as well as the local market. I've totally stopped recreational shopping for clothes, no evenings out or office to go too:( I've never bought so many plants though.

Lindy2 · 16/10/2020 22:10

Yes, since March supermarket shopping has been by click and collect. I occasionally pop into small, quiet shops but only if I can be in and out in less than 10/15 minutes and social distance whilst inside. If I can buy online I prefer to do that.

The advice is to avoid crowded inside spaces that aren't well ventilated. That describes most supermarkets and shopping centres to me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/10/2020 22:13

We don’t have a car so have always done Sainsbury’s online for groceries. I go to the M&S food hall for bits and bobs, because I know where everything is, and can get in and out quickly - but today they were back to a queue and a man on the door because the rules have changed again (Scotland).

I’m happy to wear a mask to get my hair done, because the benefit to me outweighs the pain-in-the- arseness, but don’t get any pleasure from clothes shopping in one, so just buy online.

nighttrains · 16/10/2020 22:28

Yes. I haven't been into our local town centre since lockdown. For all I know all the shops could have shutdown, that's a reflection on how awful our local shops are, they aren't any I'd shop at tbh.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/10/2020 22:33

Yes but nothing to do with Covid I just hate shopping in shops! I do my grocery shopping in person but everything else I buy online from the comfort of my sofa.

Deelish75 · 16/10/2020 22:38

For years I’ve done a weekly grocery shop online with a quick visit in store to pick up fresh items. I also do most of our clothes shopping online usually Next or M&S - I got all of the DC’s school uniforms online.

Since June I’ve been to my local shopping area to buy birthday cards, go to Boots/Superdrug and the post office a few times and once to Bluewater to get the dc school shoes and other bits for school - we had lunch there as well. DD still needs a few clothes for winter so we’re planning on going to Bluewater again over half term. We’re also planning on going to a National Trust place where I do like a good mooch around the gift shop.

I work in a shop and do our grocery shopping. Used to love a potter around town, but it just doesn't appeal now. I find it hard to get clothes to fit so haven't really got into online shopping in that regard. My clothes are ok for now but next spring will need a few replacements.

safariboot · 16/10/2020 22:40

To be honest I've not been buying much at all, besides groceries, which I normally buy online anyway. 20% pay cut when I was furloughed bit.

MayFayre · 16/10/2020 22:42

Until recently yes, because I hate shopping. I’ve started going to my local Waitrose again though since Ocado stopped stocking their stuff.

I guess I know longer do the occasional popping to small shops that I used to do, but I could go weeks or months between ever doing that pre Covid. I don’t really go anywhere where I would go by shops to pop into these days.

Tootsey11 · 16/10/2020 22:43

I think I'm the odd one out on this thread, as I do 90% of my shopping in shops. I've got a condition in my face but can still manage to wear a mask to get the shopping done. Have also been paint, clothes and furniture shopping all with mask on and the been fine.

Brighterthansunflowers · 16/10/2020 22:51

I used to shop mostly online anyway as I don’t drive so more convenient to have things delivered. But I would pop into corner shops/pound shop most weekdays.

Now I go to the co-op once or sometimes twice a month to top up my electricity. I collect my prescription from the pharmacy once a month. Thats about it.

I find it too stressful although I’m aware partly it’s because I don’t go often enough to get used to it.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 16/10/2020 22:51

I wasn't a keen visitor of shops before. It was school shoes, birthday cards etc.
Since March I have been in one shop to collect a school blazer that was put by for me - so 5 minutes. Everything else from grow bags to school shoes has been online.

Crinkledbeetroot · 16/10/2020 22:56

Yes but did it pre-Covid too. I hate shopping!

BlueJava · 16/10/2020 23:04

I've only bought one thing in person since March - spectacles. Before then I only went to a shop rarely though so not covid related. We get everything including supermarket stuff delivered.

barbites · 16/10/2020 23:05

@Funkypolar exactly the same!

U8myufo · 16/10/2020 23:11

Yes, I haven't been to a shop since mid march. I get everything online and if I can't I don't bother with it. I always shopped online pre covid though as I despise shopping.

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2020 23:12

I have been going out of my way to support my local shops because I love them and dont want them to close.

Dartsplayer · 16/10/2020 23:14

I've always hated shopping so was shopping online way before Covid

TenOclock · 16/10/2020 23:17

I've never understood shopping as a leisure pursuit and was avoiding shops as much as possible long before Covid.

3kidsandafewcats · 16/10/2020 23:53

I’ve got used to masks now. I love shopping if I didn’t go shopping I’d be stuck in the house all the time because there is no where else to go.

brightgreenvan · 17/10/2020 00:59

I've not been to the shops much since my toddler DD was born as she never liked going, so Covid hasn't changed that much. The queues and one way systems have made it worse so I've switched to online grocery shopping and it's so much easier - I don't think I'd ever return to grocery shopping in person again. And it's much easier to shop for non-food items online since Covid - more shops offering free delivery/returns, and couriers are happy to leave items without them being signed for (and DH is wfh so at home all day) so no need to wait in for a delivery. I'm not concerned about the risk of being in a shopping centre or having to wear a mask (we go to soft play and museums all the time), I just find it so much better and more pleasant to do all my shopping online.

IceCreamSummer20 · 17/10/2020 01:06

Yes I do avoid shops now. Although I always liked online anyway.

However lockdown made me realise that I was doing a lot of unnecessary shopping, out of boredom I think and something to do! I realise I’ve got to spend my time better.

It is also easier to think straight online, kind of. I am far more aware of what I spend and why, and how much crap you can accumulate when I did clear outs in lockdown!

I wonder if COVID have speeded up what is pretty inevitable.
