Those comments from JVT are very encouraging- but how does he know?

Have they reached 75 infections, unblinded the trial and are just working through the technical stuff? Isn't that market sensitive information that should be released to the stock-market?

He's been very cautious so far, so I'm inclined to think he must be confident.

@Bouncycastle12

Christ - never thought a video of a Pfizer factory would make me cry... god, amazing seeing the vaccine go into production.

I wonder how they’d manage a situation where there are a number of active vaccines? Assuming there isn’t a huge difference in efficacy between them. Which gets priority?

A good problem to have I guess. Smile

I imagine the UK government would use the British, cheaper and already made Oxford vaccine if all other things are equal. However, I would guess that some may offer different benefits in different populations ( eg the elderly , immunocompromised, young and vulnerable) so they may have a more nuanced approach- that would be a great place to be in!!!

I was just coming to see if Jeremy Farrar's Sky News bit had been uploaded here! Smile

Like the bit at the end about not only vaccines but also treatments. He's very upbeat about monoclonal antibodies particularly.

Jrobhatch29 · 18/10/2020 13:22

Thanks everyone this is making me feel better todaySmile

JemimaPyjamas · 18/10/2020 13:25

Whoopeee! This is all great. I am convinced that, unless you look for it, it will seem to be all gloom for a good few months and then suddenly things will kick off on the vaccine front and the world will look a very different place.

One weird thing though, I have found this info and the links really good to read, and I also think that it's far from 'blind optimism' or something equally pessimistic, it is instead quite balanced and from reasonable sources (and different sources.) Hence, I am surprised at how little enthusiasm it seems to be getting when I tell people, like with the consequent complaining about flu vaccines 'so how on earth will they manage to organise covid vaccines?'

ajandjjmum · 18/10/2020 15:30

Jemima
There are always some people who love to moan!

Vaccine news has cheered me up no end - might actually get to see DS again!

Just came on ready to share this too!!
It's so refreshing to have something to hold on to isn't it?

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 18/10/2020 16:14

This is so great to read. Thank you for sharing!

Defenbaker · 18/10/2020 16:58

Great news. I hope the government will use this to promote SD/mask wearing compliance over the next few months, by stressing that these measures will buy us the time needed until vaccines roll out. Next spring is looking much brighter already.

cathyandclare · 18/10/2020 17:27

Behind a paywall, but good news story about the UK's order for 40 million of the Pfizer vaccine:

feelingverylazytoday · 19/10/2020 22:40

This may be good news for some sufferers of 'long covid', specifically those with respiratory damage

This test could really change things - as much as the vaccine I think. I’m glad it’s ready for use finally!

Although at £80/ test I hope the price comes down rapidly!

First one is saliva test and second more info about good indoor ventilation to stop spread

tootyfruitypickle · 20/10/2020 16:50

Great to see this come to the top again today!

I have found Jeremy Farrar very encouraging this week - both the Sky piece and on the podcast Newcast. I was hanging on massively for a vaccine but it sounds like the antibody treatments could be even more of gamechanger. He's very very confident about those. I wonder if it will end up being something we treat with these from the GP - like we get antibiotics for other things? No idea, but that's what I'm imagining !

tobee · 20/10/2020 17:30

Would be great if it has to stay endemic, we treat as just another disease, that a course of pills/whatever can be taken and shrug off.

TiersTiersTiers · 20/10/2020 18:16

The vaccine information looks more promising. As others have said it could eventually be a disease that pops up seasonally and the vaccine is given to more vulnerable people. in a few years time things could be quite different and back to more 'normal' times/procedures!

tootyfruitypickle · 20/10/2020 18:18

It does seem that more and more scientists are feeling optimistic. I think I heard somewhere we could hope for some vaccine news next month?

Orangeblossom7777 · 20/10/2020 19:01

There was talk about a combined antiviral / antibiotic pill treatment at once stage (to take at home) it would be great if something like this could happen, say as we have home treatment for chest infections.

That cheap steroid seems to be a good one
