Thank you to those who have contributed to the good news thread over the past few weeks. We are at 40 pages so here is a new one to continue sharing good news stories :)

Yes it said in the Mail (and a Mner who claims to be close to the process has also posted Wink) that the Oxford vaccine is supposed to be announced next week.
Exciting times!

chri55ie · 10/11/2020 09:39

On which thread did the MNer say this @TheCountessofFitzdotterel? Wouldn’t mind a read!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/11/2020 09:58

It was Laudemio on the press conference thread but there wasn’t really much more detail!

chri55ie · 10/11/2020 10:17

Thanks!

MarcelineMissouri · 10/11/2020 15:49

This guy Christian Martin who I know we are not quite sure who he is but appears to possibly have some connection to the Oxford vaccine is tweeting that the results from Oxford may be as good as Pfizer’s....

chri55ie · 10/11/2020 16:15

It might explain the optimism of Professor John Bell.....

WindChimeTinkle · 10/11/2020 18:52

I hope this is inspiring the next generation of scientists

tobee · 10/11/2020 19:08

What luxury that there might be a choice so soon! (Presumably not a personal choice Grin)

Great to hear more treatment news as well, it does tend to get overlooked in the news cycle!

MarcelineMissouri · 11/11/2020 13:19

Positive reports from the Russian vaccine as well
sputnikvaccine.com/newsroom/pressreleases/the-first-interim-data-analysis-of-the-sputnik-v-vaccine-against-covid-19-phase-iii-clinical-trials-/

While I take it with a pinch of salt and wouldn’t be that keen to take this particular vaccine myself apparently it’s based on the same tech as the Oxford vaccine.

Also in general, assuming we can trust the data from Russia, it suggests that cv could be really quite susceptible to vaccine which is obviously great news!

TheKeatingFive · 11/11/2020 13:21

It’s funny that there’s no suggestion at all that we sign up to the Russian vaccine. Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/11/2020 13:23

Hmm I wouldn’t. I have it on good authority that it turns you into an elk.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/11/2020 13:26

Oooooh, I've always wanted to be an elk!

(Being flippant because I'm feeling a bit flippant with all this positive news). Come on AZ (and good luck) ...I can't wait. They weren't unblinding until (I think) 164 +ve CV cases, so much later than Pfizer.

Report on how accurate the quick lateral flow tests are

tobee · 11/11/2020 17:07

Lateral flow sounds like some sort of new age lifestyle experience

Not China vaccine yet.

tobee · 11/11/2020 17:09

*Nor not not.

What a great thread. So many people in tears and I know how they feel. I see though that the news is back to doom and gloom about the 50k deaths.

What is it about the media over the last year. They have not covered themselves in glory. They would say they are only reporting facts but honestly - the language they use is terrible. I know lots of people who just dont listen to the news now. They seem to want to bring us all down.

Well, we arent down. The whole world, the best brains in the world are working on a vaccine and hopefully there will be a few vaccines to choose from. The Pfizer ones sound a little tricky. Two doses a few weeks apart.

Our local surgery does flu jabs. Every single year they have a Saturday for under 65's and every single sodding time they get over 65's trying to get in. Others think its the opportuity to come with other aliments and try and cover them off. This is why I am really hoping the Oxford vaccine is approved. Much cheaper and one dose only I believe.

God, I have Sky on in the background (they are at it again - doom and gloom). Just turned off.

Bathroom12345 · 11/11/2020 17:15

Sorry, that was a bit gloomy. Please dont ban me from this thread!

I wont be having the vaccine anytime soon and I am not sure about them focusing on care homes . Please dont get bogged down in trying to get them done at any cost and time. DF is in a care home and I am expecting to be asked to give consent for him to have the vaccine. Please dont get tied up in endless form filling.

tobee · 11/11/2020 17:57

The media is (should be) reporting the truth. But they are also in the business of selling news. So they often leave out the good stuff sadly.

MarshaBradyo · 12/11/2020 07:38

GDP up 15% third quarter which is strong. We’ll dip again over next one due to lockdown but that feels good for second quarter next year. Hopefully back on track with strong rebound again.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2020 13:15

Nine out of ten people would get the vaccine - Daily Mail link but reports academic research.

I reckon this is good news since I have seen plenty of catastrophising about low uptake.

The Oxford vaccine is also 2 jabs but the logistics are easier in that I think normal fridges can be used rather than deep freeze so will be simpler to administer. It would be amazing if it is proved to be as protective as Pfizer as then a better all round vaccine. Plus cheaper per dose too I believe.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2020 13:22

I think I read that we are paying £2 for the Oxford vaccine per dose compared to £15 for Pfizer.
Quite frankly even that doesn’t seem that bad to me.

User158340 · 12/11/2020 13:25

Oxford Vaccine would be a real game changer if it could be rolled out easier.

The other vaccine is good but it's going to be a slow process.

Having them both working in tandem would quicken the process up a lot.

herecomesthsun · 12/11/2020 13:35

Apparently, we are formally out of recession?Shock
