I'm calling it - people aren't complying.

Local lockdowns aren't working. The North has proven that. Why would it be different in London or anywhere else for that matter? People have stopped complying. They did it in March when it was implied by Bojo that it was going to be a 3 month thing, but as it has become abundantly clear that that this is going to be a way of living until there is a vaccine, and there is no guarantee on a vaccine, people have just said sod it then, I'm not living that way.

I won't be complying. I'll be continuing to see my mum and my sisters. I'd obey it to the letter if it was a 2 week circuit breaker, but as it's clear we're going to have to live this way until at least next Spring, no, I won't be complying.

And for those who say "oh well that's why cases are going up" - until this government kicks itself up the arse and gets a functioning test and trace system in place, they always would anyway. Either it's lockdown or it's cases rising. And most of us aren't prepared to live without seeing family or friends (yes, indoors!) until Spring.

I shield for people like that. I stay in. I honestly don't think that unless people have been directly effected. That they will ever know.

I remember that poor boy.

I also remember many years ago when I worked as a cleaner on NICU the guttural scream of a woman whose three day old baby had just died. I also remember seeing her husband hold her. That same woman, had that happened today, would more than likely have had to be on her own to receive that news due to the restrictions. Which make no sense in that particular instance.

Flowers that must have been absolutely awful for you and the poor family. I don't think the OP actually cares though. Probably best to ignore her and let her troll on. It's sad but there are people who really won't attempt to follow simple guidelines and help others. Good luck to you and yours @allhappeningatonce

Almost all the areas with higher than average rates of infection are those with university populations. The place with the lowest in London has no university, the only places with high levels in the west country have them, for example.

As for non-compliance, it reduced when Dominic Cummings told his tall story and was not sacked. Even Mr Johnson's father does not comply.

The thing is that yes, if I passed covid onto my father (or whoever) and he died, yes I would feel bad.

But I would also feel bad if I'd passed flu, norovirus or chickenpox (he hasn't had it) on to him and he'd died.

Someone please tell me what the difference is, on a personal level.

Covid is deadlier than the others you have mentioned.

Totally agree with @LangClegsInSpace And ive spotted a couple of usernames who were very very happy to vote for individualism for years and now all of a sudden want the opposite.

I would support a nationwide circuit breaker lockdown of 2-3 weeks, with schools closed.

But while schools are open (and I personally think they should be open) these local half lockdowns are a farce.

It makes no sense at all to say they are in a mega bubble in school (and travelling to and from) but can't see the same friends to socialise with outside of school

Perhaps it would make sense if we were experts in communicable disease and had access to all the research.
This shows the majority of covid infections are caught in people's homes because it's an enclosed environment. More face to face talking and laughing, as well as more physical contact between friends and family members.

murmurgam · 15/10/2020 17:51

We're in a Tier2 area whilst my parents are in a Tier1 area but with more cases per 100,000! We both work from home, go to no pubs or restaurants or see anyone else. My parents likewise do not go out or meet up with anyone. I won't feel any guilt at meeting up with them even though it's against the rules.

Yes. I assume she would of been on her own. Sadly we both ended up in resus. I've seen some horrific stuff in resus these last few months.

toxtethOgradyUSA · 15/10/2020 17:52

outofthemoon you have hit the nail in the head. With schools open, there will always be cases. But ... it is pretty much universally agreed that schools are a non-negotiable, and rightly so. At some point, we as a nation need to bite that bullet.
The lockdowns without schools shutting are simply political - the government has to be seen to be doing something.

Well as you highlighted Esther McVey, it's clear there's a lot of dim people not quite getting it. As usual.

@unmarkedbythat

Grow up, for goodness sake, and at least be honest with yourself. You are part of the problem and all the self righteous bullshit you spout pretending otherwise won't change that. It's this sort of posturing that really annoys me. You won't comply, you increase risks to everyone else. If the government are doing a poor job of managing this that is even more reason for people to act to reduce the spread- not to indulge in this frankly pathetic performance, trying to pretend that their selfishness is something to applaud. It is people like you I am going to blame for the upcoming lockdowns lasting longer than any of us is happy with- selfish, ignorant, egotistical idiots.
This. Absolutely in a nutshell

Sorry, the infections in homes being most influential is just utter bollocks. They have no idea. How does it get into the home? Schools will have massive reservoirs if untested, asymptomatic carriers spreading it everywhere so you can’t prove where you caught it. Mass testing in schools would reveal how utterly stupid it is to blame it on households. Enclosed environment, laughing, talking, physical contact. You are describing a secondary school, both in classrooms and in corridors. Kids are crammed in so tight they are touching. Nobody is 2m from anyone. They still talk and discuss. 30 of them face me with a good 8 less than 2m away every lesson of every day.

perfume577943 · 15/10/2020 18:00
@perfume577943 I wish it was as easy as that. There are people that need to shield, but they can’t just be isolated completely for example - there will be school children’s’ parents (that they live with) undergoing cancer treatment which lowers their immune system, they have to send their kids to school, so will be facing even greater risk if their kids’ classmates are meeting auntie Jane and uncle Tim on the weekend and their children who go to different schools. Similarly, when I go to a restaurant with my household, the waiter serving me may have someone vulnerable at home, and has no say in how much socialising I have done during the day, and can’t turn down a shift at work.
There is still choice there, the mum could home school the children such as everyone has been doing the whole of lockdown and furlough could be offered to those who live with or are themselves critically vulnerable (have had a letter from nhs to shield). There are options as to where those who don't need to put their life on hold don't have to.

@MH1111

But at the moment if we get ion with things and just let the virus spread we could in theory get up to 365000 deaths per year , just from covid and no space to treat all those other illnesses. So what do you do , just refuse treatment to anyone who gets it , or as Italy did have to chose who gets treatment and who does not ? Why would you inflict that on our nurses and doctors .

This is not just our government, france is in emergency measures and Spain has been struggling too . We are all in the middle of a massive learning curve and of course economics and health are intertwined in more ways than one .
