Inevitable that the media would be out in force last night looking for such scenes. I watched the ITV 10pm news and the reporter was in a virtually empty street and acknowledged that whilst there had been fears that thousands would congregate in the city centre this had not materialised.

Also watched this and had to say Liverpool looked like a ghost town so I was surprised to see the footage of the crowds this morning. Not to dismiss or minimise the fact that these people behaved like idiots but I think there is a section of the media that like to regularly sensationalise things just for clicks. The same news outlets also regularly show pictures of people out in northern cities like Newcastle whenever they want to tut at nasty irresponsible northern people.

Holyrivolli · 14/10/2020 18:11

@DisgruntledGuineaPig. Absolutely. Young people have been expected to prioritise older people for the last 7 months and put their lives on hold for something that doesn’t affect them. Don’t blame them for thinking fuck it.

anothermansmother · 14/10/2020 18:11

A lot of them were students, who moved into halls then got told to isolate for 2 weeks who've only just been allowed out. It's shit,it means we'll probably get more infections and half term will be ruined.
On the other hand some of the images in the media aren't Liverpool and are saying they are.

MaxNormal · 14/10/2020 18:18

hypo-empathic
Really? I would counter that there's a hell of a lot of selective empathy going on.

nearertonature · 14/10/2020 18:19

I think the behaviour of Margaret Ferrier was worse. Made worse by her complaints of being ' hung out to dry' by her party.Hmm

Sillysop92 · 14/10/2020 18:26

A last hurrah I imagine!

Lindy2 · 14/10/2020 18:28

They should be ashamed of themselves. I despair at the selfishness of these people.

Lowkee · 14/10/2020 18:30

My teens have missed out on so much this year and everything in the foreseeable is cancelled too. They're locked away, apart from school now. I'm so disappointed for them. I've become placid with age, but back in my day, I'd have been out there saying a Fuck You to the authorities. They haven't done anything awful. They've just gone a little wild on their last night of freedom with nothing by uncertainty lying ahead of them for the Winter.

JamminDoughnuts · 14/10/2020 18:30

again, the press would have wet themselves at this video, which from the angle looks worse and more packed than it is

sergeantmajormum · 14/10/2020 18:32

There are 60000 students in Liverpool. Even if all the 300 people filmed in Concert Square were students (and you really cannot tell that just because they look the right age), that is still a tiny tiny proportion of the student body, the majority of whom are following the rules. The rest of the city was very quiet - ITV couldn’t even find a mob so the News at Ten could whip up anti Liverpool sentiment 🙄 Clearly the behaviour as filmed was completely idiotic and no one would condone it but it isn’t only happening in Liverpool nor is it at all representative of Liverpool students.

Keep1984fiction · 14/10/2020 18:35

According to media intensive care in Liverpool usually has an occupancy rate of around 75% at this time of year.
It's now at 85% occupancy, it's not been waiting empty just in case covid sufferers were brought in.

Inkpaperstars · 14/10/2020 18:35

@DisgruntledGuineaPig

Selfish is an interesting word.

Its thrown at young people wanting to have fun and live a normal lifestyle that most of us did at that age.

Its not thrown at old people wanting to limit young people's lives in order to protect their own.

They've given up 7 months for you /your loved ones. Is it selfish to keep fucking them over to keep yourself safe?

I dont blame them making the most of what little slivers of joy the older generation will allow them.

We should all be ashamed of how we are treating our young people.

What, slivers of joy like throwing bottles at police cars? Something has wrong with their lives long before Covid if that is how they get their kicks.

Also, older people are not asking younger people to do this, and nor are they doing it just to protect others. The effects of exponential growth to a natural peak will be society wide.

Lowkee · 14/10/2020 18:36

I see NI shutting down pubs/restaurants/hairdressers/gym classes (though you can go to the gym alone). I'm personally dreading similar here again.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 14/10/2020 18:37

Fair Play to them. I would have done the same if I had been young and in Liverpool

Increasingly nonsensical rules brought in because of 'scientific' advice given by people who have huge amounts of money invested in in pharmaceuticals and set to make millions when the long awaited vaccine is released. All for something that is a cold for the majority of young people.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 14/10/2020 18:37

Surely though they know why they may have to miss a few things. I’d not be happy if mine thought their social needs were above the law and everyone’s health.
CoronaIsWatching · 14/10/2020 18:40

Because they don't want to listen to a lying, corrupt government nor do they want to sleep walk into a fascist dictatorship Hmm

user1471588124 · 14/10/2020 18:41

As a young person ive had enough now. Many in the older generation dont care about climate change and our future, the fact that in 30 years the planet will likely be destroyed and it'll be too late to do anything.

The majority of older voters have voted for a government of austerity for decades, leading to the devastatingly underfunded nhs we have now. I see little hope for the future and although i am not going to parties etc I can see why others are. I dont think we're selfish, we have sacrificed alot for the past 7 months.

I live in a shared house with people i dont know and am in a tier 2 area. According to the rules i cant even see anyone i know, even my boyfriend because no household mixing is allowed.

ScarMatty · 14/10/2020 18:42

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

But that's not correct, because it isn't everyone's health; it's under 1% at a push. And it's not just for a short while

CrappleUmble · 14/10/2020 18:45

@Ohthatsgreat

Funny people playing cricket on the streets of Peckham didn’t come in for the same vitriol
Odd that innit.
DisgruntledGuineaPig · 14/10/2020 18:48

@Inkpaperstars - who do you think the lockdown is for then if not the older people?

If we all had the response to covid of the 18-25 year olds, that death rate and hospital admissions - we wouldn't even bother giving it an exciting name, let alone do any sort of handwashing campaign or social distancing. "Ooh, theres a nasty flu doing the rounds this year" would be as far as it went.

Restrictions don't benefit them. They benefit older people who have a very different response to the virus.

Yet young people are the ones who's lives have been the most negatively effected.

We are asking them to give up the most for the least personal benefit.

amusedtodeath1 · 14/10/2020 18:49

Because they don't care that their hospitals are almost full, they don't care that people will die because there's no hospital capacity. Because drinking is more important than everything else.

It's not surprising, the young have always been self focused, I was and I grew out of it, they will too.

The problem here seems to be that the powers that be weren't prepared for it, had no plans in place to control the inevitable.

Runmybathforme · 14/10/2020 18:51

I’m sick of seeing these completely selfish young adults flouting restrictions. They are no more important than anyone else, and they haven’t suffered more than anyone else. We’re all sick of this situation, but their actions appear to be excused . Their feelings, wants and needs are no more important than older people who are compliant. I frequently meet people who haven’t been out of their houses since March, some of these students are so entitled , perhaps it’s a reflection of their upbringing.

cptartapp · 14/10/2020 18:51

As the parent of two teens, they absolutely have had the worst experience of lockdown of all the generations in our family.
For my PIL for example, very little has changed. And they'll be unlikely even to still be around in a few years to deal with the aftermath.
After thirty years of nursing and borne out by working all through Covid in a face to face role, the selfish attitude and sense of entitlement comes usually not from the youngest members of society at all.
That's not to excuse the behaviour of those in Liverpool.

starrynight19 · 14/10/2020 18:52

And putting it into perspective they were dancing and singing.
The police came and someone threw a bottle at the car.
They then all dispersed and went home.
Hardly riots and anarchy.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 14/10/2020 18:54

The 10 o clock spill out in the streets has been happening all over too.

That was predictable to anyone who isn't Michael Gove.
