@GreenPlum I’m pre menopausal and not using contraception and I’m on the trial Confused
Shock If you look at consent form it specifically mentions that you have to use birth control if pre menopausal

GreenPlum · 20/11/2020 20:00

My friend said she was rejected when she said she's not on any contraception and they don't use condoms.

The consent form changed between my first and second appointment and I had to re-sign it. One of the changes was that condoms are ok on their own whereas before they needed to be used with spermicide. (Novavax being an American company.)

mollypuss1 · 20/11/2020 20:50

It’s not on my consent form. Contraception was discussed at my first appointment and I was advised not to get pregnant but I was accepted on the trial. I can only assume it was added as a pre-requisite after my initial appointment. (I was injected on my centre’s first day of appointments, in fact my patient number is a single figure). I’m early 40s and did inform them I have zero intention of getting pregnant.

Daftapath · 20/11/2020 21:08

I am on hrt and only having periods because of that. The young doctor who took my medical history came back specifically to discuss contraception. He said that as I was still within child bearing age (in my 50's!) would I agree to contraception for the next year and that condoms were ok. Had to do a pregnancy test too.

Maiyakat · 20/11/2020 21:21

I'm pre-menopausal and not on contraception. The doctor agreed that sex with a woman was fairly unlikely to get me pregnant... I did have to promise that in the very unlikely event I were to have sex with a man in the next 12 months I would use contraception!

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 20/11/2020 21:21

3rd visit today for antibody test. In and out in around 20 min. Usual pre visit call from the research nurse yesterday and no symptoms/ side effects to report. Next visit January which I assume is another antibody test?
Papers today saying that leaked NHS planning documents show that all adults will be vaccinated by spring, so where does that leave us in the trial? I’m 57 so will be in one of the earlier groups. Do we ask to be unblinded?

andadietcoke · 20/11/2020 21:36

@JosephineDeBeauharnais yes, when you're 'called up' you contact the trial team and they'll unblind you. If you had the placebo, easy call. If you had the active Novavax vaccine then it's a more complicated call and depends on where in the reporting cycle they are for Novavax in terms of understand efficacy.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 20/11/2020 21:45

Ooh that is tricky 🤔. Would we even be allowed to have two vaccines? Interesting. Not that I believe for one moment that a vaccination programme of that magnitude will be carried out in that timeframe. Pure propaganda IMO.

andadietcoke · 20/11/2020 21:48

This morning the lead doctor said he thought that Novavax will be able to release some results by February time so if imagine that'll be before you'd be up for a vaccine.

Evenstar · 21/11/2020 08:47

I had my initial appointment yesterday.

I am having to wait until the next visit and need to have a negative pregnancy test to have the first injection due to the periods/contraception issue, have had to agree to condoms even though I only have a bleed due to HRT and have been assured by GP and practice nurse that I don’t need contraception.

Frazzled2207 · 21/11/2020 09:59

@Evenstar
Sorry to hear.
I was not asked about contraception and they forgot the pregnancy test when I went for the first jab. They took my word for it that I was not pregnant.
I did however have a preg test when I went for 2nd jan.

andadietcoke · 21/11/2020 10:36

No pregnancy tests here either. I'm on long term contraception though (Nexplanon), so maybe that's it. I was told I would have to do a pg test, but didn't in the end.

Evenstar · 21/11/2020 10:59

@Frazzled2207 it’s a bit of a pain isn’t it, but hopefully I can have the injection next week. I do totally understand the need for caution, but I wonder if it would deter some people from taking part and leave a gap in the data for menopausal women.

GreenPlum · 21/11/2020 12:06

They forgot to do my pregnancy test at my first visit but I alerted them before they injected me! I have the implant and haven't had sex in seven years! but they'd said it was necessary anyway.

I knew it wasn't essential for me and my non existent baby but I didn't want it to muck up their data.

Torvean32 · 21/11/2020 13:02

I was pregnancy tested at both appointments. They were happy to accept that i was not in a relationship, and just said to use condoms.

MrsHamlet · 21/11/2020 13:18

I was hoping I was pregnant so I could sell my story to the Daily Mail. Turns out that being single and celibate is a pretty reliable form of contraception!

GreenPlum · 21/11/2020 15:31

I know! While I waited three minutes for the pregnancy test result (seven years after I last had sex) I was thinking of the headlines! ..... Forget the vaccine, we have the second immaculate conception!

Daftapath · 21/11/2020 16:12

I told them that if I was pregnant it would have been an immaculate conception and they would have to call me Mary. The young doctor didn't get the joke, the senior nurse (he was my age) did GrinGrin

I wondered about having 2 vaccines too, so I asked the doctor and she said two vaccines might be okay if the mechanism of action is different. But two similar vaccines probably not okay. I am paraphrasing. She also said having a second vaccine (after having a vaccine as part of the trial when unblinded) would depend on lots of different factors, many of which we just don't know at the moment- i.e. which vaccines work in different people, for how long etc.

I agree about the timeframe!

ramblingsonthego · 21/11/2020 19:51

I was told at my appt last week that you can have any other covid vaccines offered after 4 weeks. Nothing in the novavax will stop you having another vaccine.

That's interesting. I prefer the answer you got!
Vargas · 21/11/2020 22:38

I had my second appointment on Friday. There was some sort of mixup with the vaccine/placebo, wrong label or something so I had to wait around for quite a while while they sorted it out.

I am early 50s and convinced them that my coil plus not having had a period for many years means I don't need a pregnancy test!

After my first jab I felt completely fine but last night I had a terrible night's sleep (unusual for me) and felt quite achey and tired today. A couple of nurofen put it right but now I am wondering if I have had the vaccine... or it's all just in my head Grin.

andadietcoke · 22/11/2020 00:27

Hope you feel better tomorrow @Vargas

I'm genuinely looking forward to us all finding out what we had. Even though my arm pain was awful I can still explain it away in my head that I had a muscle twitch when I had the jab!!

MrsHamlet · 22/11/2020 09:36

Well that is interesting!
