Have just had the call and am going tomorrow. Very excited. Anyone else doing this?

@Torvean32
we were told that if we become eligible for a vaccine while still in the trial then we get unblinded so that we can potentially have it. Being 42 and healthy, I expect to be down the bottom of the queue somewhere.

The doctor in charge at our location said that they expected to have enough information "by spring" for approval. He also said he expected 4 or 5 vaccines to get approval by that time, with Pfizer and AZ the front runners by far.

Im the same age as you @Frazzled2207, no health issues that would put me ahead.
If one of the other vaccines clear first and it came to your turn, they un-blind you and say you had placebo, then would you get an alternative vaccine or NONOVAX if released?

Whichever one you're eligible for. We wouldn't even get Novavax unless we're eligible for it which Dr Baxter described as 'a bit tight' 😂

@EverybodyKeepCool

I had my first appointment at Cheadle today and mine was definitely a shade of yellow. Interesting talk on the Pfizer one requiring storage at -80 and how feasible it will be to actually locate enough storage for billions of vaccines at that temperature
I heard a vaccinologist saying some of the vaccines in the pipeline will not need refrigeration and they'll be ideal for developing countries where cold storage would be impossible.
Noranorav · 11/11/2020 18:00

Adding myself to this thread, had the 2 vaccines (or not!) and next up is the blood test.

Interesting reading what different docs are saying re timescales, mine said that they'd have to get permission to start giving people the vaccine before the end of the 12 month study period and it wasn't likely to be imminent.

Anyone had any side effects? I haven't, in fact was/am convinced I was given placebo as arm didn't really hurt at all, no soreness after either time. After flu jab couldn't sleep on that arm!

Noranorav · 11/11/2020 18:01

My vaccine was pale green I think

BG2015 · 11/11/2020 21:06

Second injection this afternoon. They were having a nightmare at the Cheadle study as a dr had to go home (family emergency) so their timings were all out.

My appointment was at 3.30pm and I didn't leave the hospital until just after 7!

They were very apologetic about it all.

GreenPlum · 11/11/2020 22:18

Has anybody had any side effects? We can't all have had the placebo!

Frazzled2207 · 11/11/2020 22:45

@GreenPlum
Some definitely have including @andadietcoke
Zero for me. Am personally convinced I had the placebo.

Just an achey arm at the injection site the evening of the injection and that lessened over the following 24hrs. Convinced it was the saline! Grin

MsWarrensProfession · 11/11/2020 23:14

Strange/annoying that you’re getting a true placebo. Most of the other trials seem to be giving meningitis jabs as placebo so you can’t get any clues from presence or absence of side effects.

Torvean32 · 11/11/2020 23:45

There is a sub trial thats using the meningitis vaccine but it would be in your information leaflets. Mine specifically say the placebo is saline plus glucose.

I had muscle pain after the 1st injection. After the 2nd i had muscle pain plus some joint pain too.
However i was wary about telling the Dr in case i had a placebo and I was imagining it. Blush

andadietcoke · 12/11/2020 06:13

Yes, my arm pain was awful after the second one. With both I had a metallic taste, pain in my arm, same side neck pain and after the second one had a low grade fever and a spike in respiratory rate BUT I'm sure my string was clear which then makes me question the whole thing. That said, I'm starting to question myself because I have a photo of my syringe from the first dose and you can't see whether it's clear or not so no idea where I got that from!!!

BG2015 · 12/11/2020 06:22

So far I've just got a sore arm. I slept well, better than I have for ages but I'm menopausal so that means nothing Confused

Frazzled2207 · 12/11/2020 10:44

Thinking about it when I had my second jab my heart rate seemed really high for the rest of the day so i will mention that when I next go.

BUT it was the American election, my phone got hacked, and various other stressful things happened that day (I was far more stressed than usual) so it could be coincidental. My arm barely hurt at all.

On another note I find it interesting that 50% of us were given placebos whereas I read on MNet somewhere that only 10% of people on the Pfizer trial were given the real thing- not seen that in any published media though. If true that must be not very many people that got the real thing. But on the other hand they would up the number of people that got the placebo, and then got covid, more quickly!

@Torvean32 yes I was told that our placebos are nothing fancy at all.

I think it's important to report any side effects, regardless, as even if you imagine it or you had the placebo, it's still useful in their data collection.

For example, if you develop a sore throat and you report it, (but you know you just picked it up off your son who had a sore throat) the data would show that x amount of participants who received the vaccine reported a sore throat. However, x amount of those who received the placebo also reported a sore throat. It was autumn, it was rife, it's unlikely to be the vaccine causing it etc. Thats one of the benefits of having the control group.

EverybodyKeepCool · 12/11/2020 14:55

I've had no side effects at all after my first one yesterday (unless you count the ongoing stress of dealing with my employer over it... they now want full documentation on details of the trial. They can jog on)

GreenPlum · 12/11/2020 15:02

Why? That's bonkers!

AuntPeggy · 12/11/2020 15:21

That's nuts @EverybodyKeepCool - unless you're on some special contract on what possible grounds could they request that?! Non of their business essentially.

Torvean32 · 12/11/2020 17:13

I told them in the end @GreenPlum. Plus I'm in a sub-study where we had to record any reactions to the injection. So it's all there.
One bit makes you document any redness around the injection site using the ruler they give you. Then it asks you to measure the circumferance.... bit more difficult Confused

GreenPlum · 12/11/2020 17:16

Oh good! Yeah, I'm in that sub study too. Zero reactions though!

EverybodyKeepCool · 12/11/2020 17:38

I'm a part time librarian working for a county council Grin

BG2015 · 12/11/2020 18:35

My arm hurts more 24 hours later than it did with the first injection.

I'm also feeling very tired but not sure if that's because I've spent most of my day ringing parents in lieu of parents evening meetings or that it's nearly the weekend

pennee · 12/11/2020 21:12

I had my first one Monday and still experiencing tender glands under the arm I had the injection in. Small painful bruise at injection site too but that’s just me I think rather than the injection.

BG2015 · 13/11/2020 06:28

By 8pm last night my arm was really hurting and I felt achey and shivery.

Woke in the night feeling very warm so got up and took my temp it was 37.2 which isn't high but certainly high for me (temp is usually 36)

Don't feel great this morning so now convinced I've had the vaccine.
