Lock down?
No mixing households?

@Unsure33

But in our area we have not had so many school cases ? So why is that?

Because many children are asymptomatic so there is no reason to get tested until it reaches a teacher and they become ill. And then get blamed for 'socialising' or somesuch. Also, around 45% of cases last week were in educational settings. Just because you haven't heard of one nearby doesn't make that any less true. The highest number of cases was amongst 10 - 19 year olds (guess where they spend their days... yup!) And this same group is also the highest rising group and the highest overall cases now.

And people were crying out for schools to open because one they could not work and two the government were letting down a generation?

Teachers weren't. Unions weren't. They were saying 'How are you going to possibly stop the spread in schools if you cram overcrowded, poorly ventilated classrooms with people who can't or won't socially distance?' And they were vilified for it in the press as 'cowards'. Teachers (and anyone else with half a brain) were demanding that the government stop lying about children not spreading the virus and start putting some actual money towards the problem by increasing school cleaning budgets, improving facilities or supporting blended learning. None of that has happened and we are seeing the result.

Notverybright · 11/10/2020 23:09

Ginogineli I would agree with that. There have been big outbreaks factories.

Veronicat · 11/10/2020 23:09

I'm in Scotland on the West Coast. We aren't supposed to leave our health board areas. Nobody is bothering to abide by it seeing as tourists are still allowed to come here.
Apart from the pubs being shut its pretty much the same as it was last week.

Notverybright · 11/10/2020 23:09

*in factories

PickAChew · 11/10/2020 23:11

So much has leaked that all that remains a mystery is the new 3 word slogan.

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 23:12

No it didn't. There's a full breakdown from page 26 of the Commons briefing below. They split the north into three regions and all were majority Labour

Constituents win elections via their constituency. Not some through some bonkers heptarchy

Labour was thrashed in the last election in the north of England. Everyone knows this.

jakeyboy1 · 11/10/2020 23:22

I'm in the West Midlands and concerned we will all be locked down because Birmingham is bad. Wolverhampton and Dudley (which are lower) are vocally objecting but not sure it will do any good if Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell are all bad.

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 11/10/2020 23:22

@CrappleUmble is completely right.

TheSockMonster · 11/10/2020 23:23

It’s fairly easy to guess which areas will be affected by the tier three lockdowns, harder to guess which areas might fall into tier two (no mixing of households).

If the tiers follow the NHS Covid app’s high/medium/low risk categories then there would be no tier one in England, as all of England is currently classified as ‘medium’ or ‘high’ risk.

TheSockMonster · 11/10/2020 23:24

I also noticed a mention of new mask rules for outside, applicable from tier one.

Goldistheanswer · 11/10/2020 23:34

Bojo, Rishi Sunak and Chris Whity are doing the press conference at 6pm tomorrow, just been announced on Sky news.

RLOU30 · 11/10/2020 23:36

Whatever it is will end in tiers

dollychopss · 11/10/2020 23:40

Saw that the WHO appealed to leaders not to do lockdowns but if we had a proper track and trace well we would not need to

Guylan · 11/10/2020 23:42

The government locked down at the same rate of infection as most other European countries. I dont buy the "we acted too late" narrative and never have

@Flaxmeadow, not the full picture. UK locked down the latest by the measure of time from the third death next to Italy, France, Spain, Germany etc. Some of the lockdown measures were only a day or so later than other European countries. See photos. However, the big difference is UK were a couple of weeks behind in community transmission than Italy, Spain, Germany etc. Italy advised us to not leave it as late as they did, but the govt didn’t follow their advice.

WHO at the time told countries to use initial lockdown to get numbers down whilst building an effective test, trace and isolate system to take over once numbers got low enough and restrictions started to be rolled back. England particularly have not built an effective test, trace and isolate system handing a lot of the responsibility over to private companies. Italy and Germany both managed to set up a better test/trace system in those months (Germany started preparing to build up testing capacity in January). The English govt (I refer to England as I know less about the other 3 nations of the U.K.) have been chasing their tail ever since with a poor test/trace/isolate system. Turn around of test results slow and contact tracers are not managing to trace and contact enough people. The public have lost trust and why possibly adherence to self isolating when they are contacted has been lower. Also not enough financial support for those told to self isolate.

@Gilly12345

The U.K. Is a small island which is too over populated with a lot of brain dead people, get a grip and stop moaning and understand there need to be changes unfortunately. No government would wish for this situation to happen under their leadership and the tories can't do right from wrong.

My dh took some work in Liverpool today, he said it was heaving, like everyone was out. A 50 min journey took him an Hour and half as traffic really bad.
Hardly any social distancing, and no space to. Perhaps they were having one last day of freedom.

QueenOllie · 11/10/2020 23:44

So if they put Liverpool in tier 3, everyone will just travel to Manchester/Chester/Lancashire surely? I'm in Lancashire and the numbers aren't great, I don't get why just Liverpool
I mean Manchester and Lancashire objected but that can't be the only reason why
Just seems a bit stupid because surely you can predict say Lancashire numbers going up and then they will be tier 3 anyway so why not do it now Confused

RedToothBrush · 11/10/2020 23:48

Or get pissed in the back garden.
QueenOllie · 11/10/2020 23:49

@RedToothBrush exactly. Preston has been under local restrictions and the cases aren't dropping

EachPeachPearSums · 11/10/2020 23:58

I don't know but it certainly won't be them explaining why the government paid billions for track and trace and they used a fucking excel sheet....nor will they explain why people still can't get tests and are waiting a week for results. FIX IT. Such utter scumbags.

Chloemol · 11/10/2020 23:58

Introduction of the three tier system, not sure if everyone above 59 in 100k would be treated as red and all that entails, or just the worst cases and everyone else amber

As a minimum no households mixing anymore, schools to remain open, no unessential travel. Masks to be worn at all times indoors or outdoors

Followed closely by a load of people piling on here saying they don’t understand the new rules, when they are clear to the great majority, and lots saying it’s a shitfest and they are not going to follow them, the vulnerable should shield and the young allowed to get on with their lives ( completely missing the point that lots of the young are also vulnerable but need to work)

CountessFrog · 12/10/2020 00:04

Masks outside? Not for me, thanks.

QueenOllie · 12/10/2020 00:04

People aren't isolating either. I've gone apeshit at a family member. Has a "heavy cold" - headache, shivery, sore throat, cough. Hasn't had a test, no plans to get a test and has been out to the pub Hmm and they wonder why I'm shielding and not seeing them

Flaxmeadow · 12/10/2020 00:09

Guylan
Thanks for the graphs. Interesting to see it like that but I still don't think we locked down as late as is often said. By number of deaths we locked down earlier than Italy? and before Ireland by date. I don't think there was much in any of it between most countries. We also already had some restrictions in place before the actual lockdown date. Closure of schools, bars and clubs.

Yes mistakes have been made with track and trace, but hardly anyone is using it anyway and I don't think that's because people have lost faith in the government. Partly maybe but not all of it.

Didkdt · 12/10/2020 00:18

I think schools should be short circuited and let the rest of the population carry on including the professionals there to support the vulnerable children.
Working from home with children is hard work but living like this longer term will be harder.
There is no ideal solution but some curtailing measures will work better than others.
