What is "harrying" ? confused Am I being thick ?

It was a particularly brutal campaign of conquest on the North of England by William the Conqueror in 1069. Not long after he invaded the south of England 1066

Some northerners like to bring it up as being an example of the south putting down the north. It's an interesting part of our history but usually a ridiculous comparison when used now

If you're talking about this government then it WAS the north who voted them in. The red wall turned blue. It was "of our choosing" remember.

The government locked down at the same rate of infection as most other European countries. I dont buy the "we acted too late" narrative and never have

But none of that was my point. Im not on a party political soapbox. What I mean by "we have done this to ourselves" , is that we have ignored the local lockdowns. No one gave a fuck and so, unlike the harrowing, this is a mess of our own making. We northerners ignored the rules. It's as simple as that

No it wasn't. The north of England elected more Labour than Conservatives MPs in 2019, as usual. The Red Wall stuff was because there was an increase in Tories here, not a majority. Look it up.

And it isn't party political soapboxing, it's simply facts about the way the government have handled it. Utter failure to take these factors into consideration is why your take is so wrong.

Erm, I'm not sure it's intended to be an actual comparison...
Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:27

The govt gave huge spending in the budget and furlough, a budget and spending labour could have only dreamed of and we took took took. The govt told told us the rules, we ignored them. They offered us the app, no fucker is using it. Whine whine fucking whine. No this is our fault and all this class war north/south drivel is getting tired now. It isn't 1985 anymore love

musicalfrog · 11/10/2020 22:27

I'm willing to bet there will be a mention that we've done loads more testing than any other country in Europe.

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:30

Believe me it is and its also sniping and bitching. Its dragging the past up and it's pointless. "Boo hoo us poor northerners" can have some truth in it sometimes, but not this time

You didn't even know the electoral composition of the region before coming up with your imbecile theory, so the less you have to say about drivel the better. As for the app being any kind of positive rather than a huge, expensive fuck up, that's amusing.

TLDR: I'm right, your attempts at argument would disgrace a GCSE student.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 11/10/2020 22:31

Seriously what Is this north south divide??? Sw and I can tell you why South is less apparently affected! We had a massive influx of kids coming back from Italy in March and we all had symptoms but the main point is our nearest testing centre is 2 to 3 hours away!! As we rely on public transport which is very unreliable and most of our population is elderly with no access to social media we are tourist dependant and we have lost thousands in the last six months so we don't get tests as we can't afford the outcomes so if anyone's ill we stay at home! No uptick in cases no uptick in deaths done!!

Why on earth would I believe you when every post you've made on this thread has been embarrassing?

I think the area that needs more measures will be missed out - education. They need to stay open but they need more measures in place. This will largely be ignored because they have no back up plan.

We currently have no teaching staff for tomorrow at mine apart from me as all are off with isolating children from their respective schools and nurseries.

Zeebeezee · 11/10/2020 22:36

China and other countries in the EAST have totally eliminated this through a total lockdown earlier on. And though it was tough at the time, it has worked now.

I do realise those countries are not like our own democracies where everything is ADVISED and police act with kid gloves.

But the reality is those countries are all back to normal. We are floundering around with mixed messages at every turn depending on where you live.

Would we like to be Covid Free like China, S Korea, Singapore and many other places? I bet we would.

Democracy doesn't exist in UK anyway, they are taking us into Brexit aren't they? That will be lovely too. But no choice there.

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:36

They are locking down Labour Council areas, did not believe it myself until I was shown maps of both which are identical

They are locking down the 6 densely populated metropolitan counties of England. The London outside London if you like

London and the met counties are where the virus spreads most because travel hubs, infrastructure and population demographics. It's not because they are Labour or traditionally Labour.

If they govt didn't do it, we would still whine. They can't win

Gilly12345 · 11/10/2020 22:36

Hopefully severe restrictions for the areas with high levels and some kind of financial support for hospitality sector, I am fed up of seeing the images on TV of people in some areas having a very social weekend, cricket in the street and hanging around in the dark around pubs etc. This situation is awful for everyone but it is time to grow up and if your social life is disrupted again then so be it.

RationalOne · 11/10/2020 22:38

What does it matter what the announcement is......University students will carry on meeting in large groups and partying and spread the virus...selfish idiots

girlicorne · 11/10/2020 22:38

I m confused as to why the bbc is reporting only Liverpool will face tier 3 restrictions? Our cases in Nottingham are higher per 100,000! I don’t want tier 3 restrictions but I m wondering why just Liverpool?

Italianmoma1983 · 11/10/2020 22:38

Do you think London will have restrictions too ?

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:38

Why on earth would I believe you when every post you've made on this thread has been embarrassing

This is where you lose the argument. A whole post made up of a personal insult, no counter argument made at all

Notverybright · 11/10/2020 22:39

Wishfulthinking1977 that is interesting. Someone mentioned Sheffield earlier, apparently we have better testing facilities than most places, which might be another reason our numbers are higher.

Bringonspring · 11/10/2020 22:40

Thank heavens I live in a posh London borough we won’t be impacted.

Gilly12345 · 11/10/2020 22:40

The U.K. Is a small island which is too over populated with a lot of brain dead people, get a grip and stop moaning and understand there need to be changes unfortunately. No government would wish for this situation to happen under their leadership and the tories can't do right from wrong.

Not a card you can play when you've referred to criticism of the government as whining, I'm afraid. As for counter-argument, you've not even managed one. Because you can't, because your view bears no resemblance to reality and because I'm right.
Multiplying2020 · 11/10/2020 22:42

@CrappleUmble almost all of the north voted Conservative at the last election. London almost all voted Labour. See map www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50770798

I get your point, and historically you'd have been right, but you can't blame this on the Londoners!

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:43

I'm confused as to why the bbc is reporting only Liverpool

Me too but it makes a change from them only mentioning Manchester. They aren't even the largest cities in the north.

It's the BBC though, so wouldn't expect them to travel far from a Salfod wine bar anyway

Flaxmeadow · 11/10/2020 22:45

Not a card you can play when you've referred to criticism of the government as whining, I'm afraid.

I called northerners whiners, 15 million people, and I'm a northerner too. But you made a direct personal attack

As for counter-argument, you've not even managed one. Because you can't, because your view bears no resemblance to reality and because I'm right

Arrogance won't get you far in a debate either

RationalOne · 11/10/2020 22:46

I personally won't be happy until they stop the stupid university students from partying, attending clubs, standing outside said clubs in groups (over a undred in Exeter) and spreading it.. .bloody dick heads keep them on campus and away from people since they are irresponsible dicks
