To shut down for at least 6 months ? This can't be true I am utterly disgusted at the way people are being treated .... the fall out from this will be worse ! Even a WHO scientist had said lockdowns don't work

Anyone have any insider information about people not being allowed to leave Merseyside for up to six months? I am in the US, my parents in Merseyside, and am losing my goddamn mind at the thought of not seeing them for another six months or more, and then being stuck indoors all winter.

stopgap · 12/10/2020 01:46

Them being indoors, that should read ^^

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/10/2020 01:50

I can see this happening with a lot of 'party' towns and cities tbh.

So Blackpool, York etc. We were in Liverpool a few weeks ago and people were taking the piss. It's a shame because it's going to be the residents of these places suffering the consequences.

Torvean32 · 12/10/2020 01:57

Ppl are confusing restrictions with lockdown. It's not the same.

We had an extra 3 week lockdown. All pubs, restaurants, cafes etc all closed.

Only essential travel for work/care. People in city had 5 mile travel ban. Ppl were not to enter the city except for work/care.

We had limited times outdoor for exercise.
Nobody could go in others houses.

Restrictions on opening hours. Or limits on groups of ppl meeting up is not much if it gets rid of all this.

That’s not currently on the traffic light system, though this is happening in some parts of north Wales.

Rumours are gyms and pubs, but not restaurants. I’m also expecting that we won’t be allowed to meet up with other people outdoors.

@Derbygerbil

Looking at threads over the past couples of months, Liverpool always seemed to be one of those places that was least compliant. Mask-wearing compliance seemed to be pretty poor for instance. The bolshy refusal to follow rules by too many people has ruined it for everyone.
It's no different from anywhere else. Let's not spread fake news.
XiCi · 12/10/2020 06:53

Carycy I cant believe the absolute fucking cheek of you. I'm astounded. I live at one of the beach towns north of Liverpool. We had thousands and thousands of visitors, like you flood in during those days taking the absolute piss alot from hundreds of miles away. Some as far as Birmingham to come for a day at the beach. And like you they took the piss allowing their children to access locked up playgrounds. Then they trashed the beach leaving all their rubbish for the locals to clean up. Yes it was a stark contrast to where you live, because noone wants to visit where you live, people like you came here, did as you pleased then went home again.

Redcrayons · 12/10/2020 07:12

Confirmed this morning.
Pubs, bars, gyms, betting shops, casinos, and adult gaming centres across Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Halton will close as part of tough Tier 3 coronavirus lockdown restrictions - the region's leaders confirmed in a joint statement this morning

@XiCi I agree. I too live in on of those beach towns and the influx of people who had no respect for the residents, parked dangerously making roads impassable, blocking residents in, dumping rubbish, verbally abusing people who asked them to pick their rubbish up, failing to observe social distancing and really bad attitudes made my home town a horrid place to be on a sunny day. @Carycy next time go somewhere else and peddle your nonsense to someone else.

This is not what I have seen in Liverpool. Many many people were being compliant and we were low on cases before our 4 universities went back. The government should have looked at the student populations returning as a massive red flag.
zigzagbetty · 12/10/2020 07:28

@Carycy

We went there for the day when playgrounds weee still banned. And were shocked the see all the playgrounds and outdoor gyms covered in kids. My kids thought is was Christmas. Not that I think playgrounds are a major spreader but it kind of shows the attitudes in the area. Maybe I am just disgruntled because my little ones scooter was also nicked from right under our noses as well while were were there. It’s left a sour taste. I won’t be rushing back.
Thats just not a true reflection, I have a 3 Yr old and we were in various parks daily all around Liverpool during lock down and after and the parks were always empty. I know as I had the talk with her each and every visit about how they were shut for now. However you and other people daytripping during a pandemic have a lot to answer for.
MrsWhites · 12/10/2020 07:29

I’m near Liverpool, 6 months seems absolutely devastating! Livelihoods will be destroyed, bars and restaurants will never get back to normal after another closure like that.

And from a personal level, travel restrictions - so we can’t shop, have a day out etc for possibly 6 months outside of Liverpool. This is the worst restriction for me personally, I feel this will have a massive impact on people’s mental (and likely physical) health!

LittleRen · 12/10/2020 07:42

@XiCi I agree, we live in a beautiful beach town in the Borough of Liverpool (We actually have CH postcode) and the amount of people that flock to the beaches every weekend even this weekend just gone is unbelievable. It's bordering on what was seen in the beaches in the South. I strongly believe this is a big factor in why cases are so high.

Where I live is very affluent, large houses, people not living on top of each other and cases are still high even though everyone who lives here is being sensible. Local compliance has nothing to do with it.

Liverpool is such a wonderful vibrant city, it has grown so much, and been heavily invested in... it will be sad to see it happen but I imagine other places will go the same way. Liverpool is just the start.

Perhaps it is not Liverpool as such but the surrounding towns. I live in one such town (our levels are crazy high too) and our levels of compliance are a joke. The vast majority of people, especially in regard to their older children are not adhering to the regulations. A good percentage of our population commutes to Liverpool and Manchester.

KLF6 · 12/10/2020 07:55

I was in Liverpool for a night out a month ago and it was very complaint with the rules.

I know but still not be locking down to this extreme if they had a better system in place

dollychopss I completely agree, and also closing the bars etc in Liverpool won’t change a thing if people in surrounding areas are still socialising at home, catching it and bringing it into the city centre.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/10/2020 08:07

@Xici have to say I agree. We visit Liverpool a lot as dp is from the area and we were horrified.

It wasn't local people getting pissed up and being a pain in the backside. It was large groups of hens and stags.

It wasn't locals trashing West Kirby beach and giving shop staff earache either.........in all the years of visiting I've never seen such ridiculous behaviour. And this was during out of season quiet time. Luckily we know the area so knew where to head away from the crowds but it was a sad sight to see things the way they were.

On the flipside we live in the Cumbrian coast near to the lake District, we don't generally get visitors tbh but as the.hotels in the lakes have been full have had a lot of people staying here, including from Liverpool and have had exactly the same issue. Including jumping up and down on unstable walls of an ancient Abbey causing stone to come loose. And to the point that the local walking group for elderly people that also does a beach pick up on route had to down tools as they couldn't keep up.

Some of the scenes in the lakes itself were just heartbreaking. I know of at least one campsite that closed its doors and refused anyone for the first time ever.

Things have settled down now thank goodness but I'm absolutely dreading half term, there's something about being on holiday that turns some people feral. I honestly can't get my head around that mindset.

nancypineapple · 12/10/2020 08:11

I am really worried about the Merseyside situation. My elderly parents live in the Wirral-I'm in London . I spoke to my mum yesterday and she only knows of 2 cases on the Wirral (her cousins son and his daughter who is a student at L'pool uni-she picked it up there ) Here's an idea Boris-instead of taking the easy route out and going into a stricter lockdown why not put that time and planning into sorting out track and trace for areas in tier 3? As a scouser I get really annoyed at the constant slating we get. Nottingham and Manchester barely got a mention this morning and their cases are either higher or just as bad-but hey you know it doesn't fit the narrative about "bolshy" scousers as previous posters have mentioned. Ridiculous media coverage just now on the BBC filming the bars and pubs in L'pool centre. Covent Garden and Soho were heaving this weekend according to my 17 yr old DS-much busier than the scenes of L-pool. My hearts breaking for my hometown .

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 12/10/2020 08:35

Do you have any reason to believe the scientists have advised a 6 month restriction on travel outside of Liverpool? It is reported by BBC Breakfast and confirmed by the Metro Mayor of Liverpool, that negotiations are still ongoing this morning.

What do you suggest is done to fight back? Ignoring restrictions will just make it worse. That is probably was has caused the situation we are now in.

I'm peed off that my city will probably go into tier 3 and my postponed UK holiday will probably be cancelled. The PHE interactive map shows infections rates/number of Covid cases is high in the university areas of my city.

Do you really think scientists, if they did advise this, would advise it if they didn't truly believe this was the only way to protect people's lives?

annabel85 · 12/10/2020 08:37

Manchester have been a lot more resistant to being placed in tier 3, Andy Burnham seems to have some political clout and there's also a lot of Tory MPs in Greater Manchester.

The situation is serious on Merseyside but the region is being made an example of here.

MrsWhites · 12/10/2020 09:30

@Derbygerbil from my perspective as someone who lives in this region, that is completely incorrect. People in Liverpool are wearing masks, in fact many people are now also wearing them in outdoor spaces, I.e between shops in shopping areas, on the school run, in parks etc. Obviously there are a few people who don’t wear them but isn’t this the case everywhere.

I do think Liverpool is being made to be the scapegoat now to some degree.

ElizabethG81 · 12/10/2020 09:37

The Liverpool City Region is as Labour as it comes (with the exception of the Wirral). Much easier to make an example of than Greater Manchester which now has some Tory MPs on the outskirts. This government will tear Liverpool to the ground as it's an easy target.
