Is a vaccine imminent?

Forgetmenot157 · 07/10/2020 23:36

Last few days there are lots of stories about a vaccine being ready to go by November. Stories about huge vaccination stations with doctors, vets, dentists etc ready to give out the vaccine, and even the head of the Who suggesting it will be ready to go in a few weeks....

Do they know More than they are letting on? At the moment I couldn't care less if it won't be the most effective vaccine long as it means a quicker return to normality. Plus I think people being able to see the finish line will motivate most for one last push to surpress the virus befor enough are vaccinated.

Where are you hearing about this and who are "they"? I think some vaccines will start to be released from Nov/Dec but not in the UK. I think April 2021 is more likely.

Pipandmum · 07/10/2020 23:40

No.

No, not for a couple of months at minimum and probably not for many people even then. It’s all just kite flying. Of course plans have been written down (note, I did not say prepared) using an assumed date, but that doesn’t actually mean it will be ready then - August was suggested at one point! In fact I think at one point someone from Oxford was talking about potential signals of vaccine working in June!

But a few leaked hopeful stories about it nicely distract the public when test and trace is failing, more restrictions are being imposed etc.

onedayinthefuture · 07/10/2020 23:57

Definitely seems to be more news stories over the past couple of days, one saying a vaccine by next month.... Matt Hancock talking about the army being involved to vaccinate and talk of the priority groups. Unless it is a tactic or a distraction because with no vaccine imminent, it seems a huge amount of consensus now seems to be 'what's the point, can't put life on hold any longer etc'. If a vaccine is round the corner, I think it will make people behave themselves more in the meantime so as not to give up now when we are so close.

Who knows, but have fingers crossed. Just to know a possible way out had begun would be a real boost.

Buckwheat80 · 08/10/2020 00:02

Depends what you mean by "imminent" but I doubt there'll be any mass roll out this year. Probably not until the Spring.

Pachonga · 08/10/2020 00:06

USA situation: According to Dr Fauci, barring anything disasterous happening, there will be vaccines available in November /December. They’re already being produced and stored in their millions and will be ready to go as soon as they get the OK from the FDA and will be distributed among the highest risk groups first (healthcare workers and the elderly) but he reckons everyone will be done within several months. The plans for delivery have already been delivered to the individual states, who will be responsible for the distribution. There will be two jabs -one inital shot and a booster 28 days later.

No reason why the UK isn’t in a similar position.

TheKeatingFive · 08/10/2020 00:10

I think they’re getting geared up for a best case scenario (approval in the next month or so) and fair enough as time is of the essence if approval is granted.

But, there are no guarantees they’ll get it that soon.

Forgetmenot157 · 08/10/2020 00:10

Oh I don't expect everyone to be vaccinated anytime soon, however next spring would not be unthinkable if they were to start in December... Especially considering only 66% is needed for herd immunity... I just think it would give everyone the boost they need for one last push. May also mean that vulnerable can spend Christmas with families as long as they are vaccinated which would be a massive boost.

What happened to the Russian vaccine? That seemed legit.

Maze76 · 08/10/2020 00:29

Well while I hope a vaccine is on the horizon, I’m one of those who will watch and wait before going anywhere near it!

lljkk · 08/10/2020 01:30

Just coz there's a vaccine doesn't mean there's a vaccine that works. Or that anyone can be sure will work.

Russians & Chinese are supposedly vaccinating now with unproven vaccine. Americans plan to do this soon. Brits plan to wait until there's good evidence the vaccine works.

SqidgeBum · 08/10/2020 01:35

No.

All reliable reports say a vaccine in the second half of next year, and only for very vulnerable old people. Then it will slowly move down through the population. It most likely wont be given to children as it hasnt been tested on children, although maybe vulnerable children will be a separate group to this.

All the reliable reports I have seen (directly from government mostly) have said it will take til mid to end of 2022 for a vaccine to be available to the general population, and even then, it may not be effective on everyone, and may need multiple injections to be effective at all.

Unfortunately I suspect you're right. I have a horrible feeling we'll be one of the last countries to vaccinate. Our world beatingly incompetent excel spreadsheet shambles indicates how things will go. I can actually envisage a scenario where some people might fly abroad to get a jab. It would be lovely to be proved wrong however.
Torvean32 · 08/10/2020 02:08

Im taking part in the Covid Vaccine. Its a blind study so half get the vaccine and half a placebo. We are getting a load of medical tests and blood tests. Then clinic visits to see how the vaccine works. There are more blood tests to check on your antibodies.

Im not worried about it, i just want to help to get the world back to normal.

Pixxie7 · 08/10/2020 02:28

There is a vaccine about to enter its third stage hopefully ready by January.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 08/10/2020 06:04

I saw something about 5 major hubs for vaccinations but surely those who will be up the front, the elderly, won’t be traipsing half way across the country for a vaccination.

Bubblemonkey · 08/10/2020 06:22

Didn’t they initially say September for a vaccine?

pinkbalconyrailing · 08/10/2020 06:30

no. as pp said already the authorisation process of one of the vaccines has just started.
it is expected to take a good few months. and only then the manufacturing process will be scaled up.
in addition more companies are expected to apply for the license in the next few months.

Pixxie7 · 08/10/2020 06:43

So far the Government has put in orders for millions of vaccines so let’s hope one is ok.

FippertyGibbett · 08/10/2020 06:53

I assume that the current pop-up testing stations will become vaccination stations.
Seems a reasonable way to mass vaccinate.

Remmy123 · 08/10/2020 07:19

There is a vaccine already but which company wants to be the first to roll this out and get potentially sued years down the line when people get side effects as it's been rushed?? These things usually take years not months.

QueenofmyPrinces · 08/10/2020 07:33

Most people I speak to wouldn’t even have the vaccine if there was one available.

Nobody really wants to be a guinea pig on a vaccine that has appeared so quickly.

I have no opinion either way abou my whether the vaccine has been ‘rushed’ as I would like to think the Government wouldn’t put anyone at risk, but at the same time there’s been no time to monitor for long term effects of the vaccine and that’s what concerns some people that I know.
